The University Hospital of Basel (German: Universitätsspital Basel, USB), in Basel, is one of the five university hospitals of Switzerland. Since 1842 it is located in a former palace, the Markgräflerhof. USB brings together 50 clinics, units and institutes all working together in an interdisciplinary manner and employs a staff of about 5000. Since the beginning of 2012, the University Hospital has been an independent business. Following its spin-off from the state administration of the Canton of Basel-Stadt, it now has the organisational form of a state-owned enterprise. With its 7,219 employees (as of 31 December 2017), who treat around 38,000 inpatients per year (as of 2017), the University Hospital Basel is one of the largest employers in the region. A characteristic feature is its close relationship with the University of Basel and the life sciences companies based in the region. With an approximate 670 beds, USB is the biggest healthcare facility in north-western Switzerland.USB provides services in all fields of medicine apart from pediatrics.In 1953 the hospital was one of the first that did extensive research on the first neuroleptic Chlorpromazine.The hospital is well known for its special form of hormone-delivered radiotherapy to treat neuroendocrine cancer, tried by Steve Jobs in 2009.

The University Children’s Hospital Basel (UKBB) is an independent, university-based centre of competence for paediatric and juvenile medicine, as well as for teaching and research."The UKBB exists since 1999. On January 29, 2011, after several years of planning and constructing, the UKBB started operations in its new location at Spitalstrasse 33 in Basel. The colourful front of the building is its landmark. Nearly 900 staff members from different departments take care of around 6’700 stationary infants, children and adolescents and perform around 84’000 ambulant treatments each year. The biggest children's orthopaedics department and one of the biggest children's emergency units are located at the UKBB. The Children's Hospital Basel was founded on 2 January 1862, when it opened as a new hospital on the banks of the Rhine in Kleinbasel (Lesser Basel). The hospital continued to grow until 1999, when the UKBB was created from the merging of the Basel Children's Hospital and the Bruderholz Children's Clinic. Dr. med. Conrad E. Müller has been CEO of the clinic since May 2008.

The Skulpturhalle Basel is a museum in Basel, Switzerland, featuring cast replicas of antique sculpture. With around 2,000 casts it is the largest collection of its kind in the country, having tripled in size between 1985 and 2010. Since 1961 the collection has been managed by the Antikenmuseum Basel. The collection was started in 1830. From 1849 it was located in the newly opened Museum an der Augustinergasse (now the location of the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Cultures). In 1887 it moved into the Basel Kunsthalle, where a new wing known as the "Skulpturenhalle" had been built especially for it. The casts had to be warehoused in 1927 when the national art collection was temporarily moved into the Kunsthalle, creating a need for more space. In 1940 the cast collection found a provisional home in a disused factory, four years after plans for a new building had failed to pass a referendum; the new building finally materialised in 1963. When original works are split into pieces across various museums, the casts allow all the parts to be brought back together so that complete reconstructions of antique sculptures can be made. The unique "Parthenon Project" assembles casts of every surviving sculptural remnant from the Parthenon Temple in Athens, and exhibits them so as to demonstrate their original arrangements. Also in the exhibition is an array of architectural models on a scale of 1:20.

The Markgräflerhof is a baroque palace in Basel, Switzerland, built by the margraves of Baden-Durlach, who used it as an extraterritorial residence as their principality including its residences was often the victim of wars and armies. The margraves had several residences in Basel, but the construction of current palace started under margrave Frederick VII in 1698 when a fire destroyed the previous building. The palace was ready to moved in by 1705. The architect was an entrepreneur Augé who based himself on plans from a book by the French architect Charles Daviller. Frederick VII's successor Charles III William also often used the palace. But afterwards, the margraves predominantly resided in Karlsruhe. The city of Basel purchased the palace in 1807 and the University Hospital of Basel has used the building since 1842.

The University of Basel (Latin: Universitas Basiliensis, German: Universität Basel) is a university in Basel, Switzerland. Founded on 4 April 1460, it is Switzerland's oldest university and among the world's oldest surviving universities. The university is traditionally counted among the leading institutions of higher learning in the country.The associated Basel University Library is the largest and among the most important libraries in Switzerland. The university hosts the faculties of theology, law, medicine, humanities and social sciences, science, psychology, and business and economics, as well as numerous cross-disciplinary subjects and institutes, such as the Biozentrum for biomedical research and the Institute for European Global Studies. In 2020, the university had 13,139 students and 378 professors. International students accounted for 27 percent of the student body.In its over 500-year history, the university has been home to Erasmus of Rotterdam, Paracelsus, Daniel Bernoulli, Leonhard Euler, Jacob Burckhardt, Friedrich Nietzsche, Tadeusz Reichstein, Karl Jaspers, Carl Gustav Jung, Karl Barth, and Jeanne Hersch. The institution is associated with ten Nobel laureates and two Presidents of the Swiss Confederation.

The Pharmacy Museum of the University of Basel (Pharmaziemuseum der Universität Basel, formerly Pharmazie-Historisches Museum der Universität Basel, originally Sammlung für das historische Apothekenwesen) shows in its permanent collection the history of medicinal remedies and their preparation. Designed as a collection of specimens for study purposes, the museum was founded in 1924 by Josef Anton Häfliger (1873–1954) and has been preserved to this day in its original form as a 'scientific cabinet'. The museum is one of the largest and most significant collections of pharmaceutical objects and the history of pharmacy. It contains pharmaceutical ceramics, complete fixtures and fittings from historical pharmacies, an alchemical laboratory, mortars, historical first aid kits, books, medications used in the past, and everything related to the preparation of medicinal remedies.

The Haus zum Sessel at Totengässlein 3 in Basel, Switzerland, was the site of the printing press of Johann Amerbach and his successor Johann Froben.

The Zwingerhaus is located on Nadelberg 23a in Basel, Switzerland. It is named Zwingerhaus in memory of the physician Theodor Zwinger, who bought the house in 1572. It is first mentioned in 1345, then in possession of the family "zum Walpach", why it also called House zum Walpach or Walpachhaus. The house was and is located in one of the finest neighborhoods of Basel. In 1577 Theodor Zwinger called the Nadelberg a most noble and silent street. The Nadelberg translates into "Mountain of the Needle", and while the Nadelberg is not really a mountain the street follows the crest along the valley of the Birsig creek. In its neighborhood the well established families from Basel built their residences.

The Jewish Museum of Switzerland in Basel provides an overview of the religious and everyday history of the Jews in Basel and Switzerland using objects of ritual, art and everyday culture from the Middle Ages to the present.

The Birsig is a rather small river in eastern France and northern Switzerland. Its source is in the village Biederthal, in the French Haut-Rhin department, near the Swiss border. The Birsig is about 21 kilometres (13 mi) long, and its watershed area is about 82 square kilometres (32 sq mi). It flows variably through Swiss and French territory and through the Birsig Valley. Afterwards it passes the city of Basel, where it enters the Rhine (left bank). The river Birsig originally flowed openly through Basel, but the river was long ago channelled and its banks built up to prevent water damage to the houses. The river flowed directly along the houses in the lower part of the city, where many bridges were built over. It took the fecal waste from the houses and was therefore called "the city's big cloaca", which favoured the outbreak of cholera and typhus. Nowadays the Birsig is covered over for most of its course in Basel; there are just a few hundred meters around the city zoo where the Birsig can be seen openly.

The Basel city walls are a complex of walls surrounding the central part of the Swiss city of Basel, only partially preserved today. The first city wall was completed around 1080 under bishop Burkhard von Fenis. A newer wall was constructed around 1230, which is known as the Inner Wall. Its course was mostly identical to the Burkhard wall. In 1362 the construction of a larger wall complex began due to the city's expansion; it was completed in 1398, and is known as the Outer Wall. In 1859 the city's executives decided to raze the inner wall and gates to the ground. Three outer city gates and a short piece of the wall were saved from demolition and are being preserved as part of the city's heritage.

The Basel Town Hall (German: Rathaus Basel, locally known as Roothuus) is a 500-year-old building dominating the Marktplatz in Basel, Switzerland. The Town Hall houses the meetings of the Cantonal Parliament as well as the Cantonal Government of the canton of Basel-Stadt. The Great Council Chamber at one time featured a series of frescoes painted in 1522 by Hans Holbein the Younger, which have been lost. Fragments of the work as well as some of the initial drawings are kept in the Kunstmuseum."Rathaus" literally means "council house" while the term "Roothus" in the local Basel German dialect means both "council house" but also sounds like "red house", a pun with reference to the red sandstone facade of the building.
