La Plata

La Plata City Hall is the executive seat of government of the city of La Plata, the capital of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina.

The Roman Catholic Metropolitan Archdiocese of La Plata (erected 15 February 1897, as the Diocese of La Plata) is in Argentina and is a metropolitan diocese and its suffragan sees are Azul, Chascomús, and Mar del Plata. It was elevated on 20 April 1934.

To be distinguished from the Cathedral of Sucre, Bolivia, formerly La PlataThe Cathedral of La Plata in La Plata, Argentina, dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, is the 58th tallest church in the world. This Neogothic edifice is located in the geographical center of the city, facing the central square, Plaza Moreno, and the City Hall. Inspired by the European cathedrals of Amiens and Cologne, its plans were drawn by architect Ernesto Meyer under the direction of city planner Pedro Benoit. The cornerstone was laid in 1884, and it was consecrated as the Parroquia Nuestra Señora de los Dolores in 1902. The parish church, which continued undergoing works, was designated a cathedral in 1932.

The Teatro Argentino de La Plata is the second most important lyric opera house in Argentina, after the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. The theatre is located in a central block of the city of La Plata, the capital of Buenos Aires Province. The venue occupies the block bounded by the 9 and 10 streets and 51 & 53 avenues; it belongs to the Monumental Axis of public buildings in La Plata.

The La Plata National University (Spanish: Universidad Nacional de La Plata, UNLP) is a national public research university located in the city of La Plata, capital of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. It has over 90,000 regular students, 10,000 teaching staff, 17 departments and 106 available degrees. UNLP comprises the Rafael Hernández National College, the Victor Mercante Lyceum, the Bachelor of Fine Arts program, the School of Agronomy, the La Plata University Radio, the La Plata University Press and numerous academic centers for research and outreach including La Plata Museum of Natural Sciences, the University Public Library, the Samay Huasi Retreat for Artists and Writers, the Institute of Physical Education, the Astronomical Observatory and the Santa Catalina Rural Association. The institution began operations on April 18, 1897, as the Universidad Provincial de La Plata with Dardo Rocha as its rector. In 1905, Joaquín V. González, the Minister of Justice and Public Education of the government of Manuel Quintana, decided to nationalize it. González also integrated many municipal scientific institutions into the university, and a year later he became the first president of the National University of La Plata. Today the university holds one of the most important paleontological and anthropological collections in South America.

The Bank of the Province of Buenos Aires (Spanish: Banco de la Provincia de Buenos Aires), better known as Banco Provincia, is a publicly owned bank in Argentina and the second-largest in the country by value of assets and deposits.

The Polideportivo Víctor Nethol is a sports centre located in the city of La Plata in Buenos Aires Province of Argentina. Opened in 1978, it includes gymnasium, roller skating rink, sauna, and a main indoor arena with capacity for 3,000 spectators. The complex is owned and operated by Club Gimnasia y Esgrima, and serves as home venue for the club's basketball, futsal, and volleyball teams. The arena is also used for concerts and other cultural events on which its capacity is increased to 5,000.It was named after doctor in biochemistry Víctor Nethol (1915–1977), who served as teacher at the National University of La Plata and president of the Chemistry Professional Council in the same city.As a sports enthusiast, he served as vice-president of Gimnasia y Esgrima and president of "Liga Amateur de Football". Nethol died in a car accident in Recoquista, Santa Fe, two days after giving a conference.

The Curutchet House, La Plata, Argentina, is a building by Le Corbusier. It was commissioned by Dr. Pedro Domingo Curutchet, a surgeon, in 1948 and included a small medical office on the ground floor. The house consists of four main levels with a courtyard between the house and the clinic. The building faces the Paseo del Bosque park. The main facade incorporates a brise soleil.

The Rafael Hernández National College is one of the four public high schools that are part of the National University of La Plata, in the City of La Plata, Argentina. The Colegio Nacional aegis denotes a school belonging to the system of national secondary schools. The other constituent high schools associated with this university are the Víctor Mercante Lyceum, the "Bachillerato de Bellas Artes" (High School for the Fine Arts) and the Inchausti School for Agricultural Education. The school, usually referred to as the "Colegio Nacional La Plata" (CNLP, National College of La Plata), occupies a large block centred at the crossing of 1st and 49th streets in La Plata, at the edge of "El Bosque", La Plata's main park. The large engraving at the old building's entrance reads simply "Universidad Nacional, Colegio" ("National University, High School"). Originally, the college, founded by Joaquín V. González, was reserved for boys, whereas the Victor Mercante Lyceum was a girls-only school. The link of these schools with the university allowed them to pioneer innovations in curricula, since many university professors and teaching assistants were among its faculty. In its inception, the college functioned as a classic British boarding school, where students and professors lived together for extended periods of time. Admission into the school was free (i.e., no fees), although very limited and required approving strict entrance examinations. Until the 1970s, alumni from the school were automatically admitted into the University of La Plata. From the educational point of view, it was originally structured as a European gymnasium. It is considered one of the most prestigious secondary schools in Argentina.

La Plata railway station (Spanish: Estación La Plata) is the principal railway station in La Plata, the capital city of the province of Buenos Aires and seat of La Plata Partido in Argentina. It is located at the intersection of Avenue 1, Avenue 44, and Diagonal 80, at the northwestern edge of the core street grid of La Plata. It primarily serves as the southern end of a Roca Line commuter railway line that connects La Plata to Constitución railway station in the city of Buenos Aires, additionally linking it to intermediary stops in City Bell, Villa Elisa, Berazategui, Quilmes, and Sarandí. Since 2013, it has additionally been the western terminus of the University train of La Plata, which connects the station with several of the campuses of the National University of La Plata as well as the Paseo del Bosque park. The station has seven tracks and seven platforms. The station originally opened on October 1, 1906 and replaced an older station on Plaza San Martin that is now home to the Dardo Rocha Cultural Center.

The Jorge Luis Hirschi Stadium (Spanish: Estadio Jorge Luis Hirschi), also known as Estadio Uno, is a stadium located in the city of La Plata, Argentina. With a seat capacity of 35,530, the stadium is the home field of club Estudiantes de La Plata. Because of its technological innovations and environmental sustainability, the stadium is regarded as one of the most modern venues in Argentina. The stadium is also one of the oldest in Argentina so it was established at "Paseo del Bosque" park in 1906.The stadium is named after Jorge Luis Hirschi, who served as Estudiantes' president between 1927 and 1932, and is located on 1st Avenue between 55th and 57th Streets. It is thus also known as 1 y 57 (referring to its location on 1 and 57 streets). It was formally inaugurated on 25 December 1907. The arena was the venue where Estudiantes obtained the 1913 amateur league title, and where fans enjoyed los profesores ("the professors"), the famous 1930s offensive line of Lauri-Scopelli-Zozaya-Ferreyra-Guayta. In its initial incarnation (1907 to 2005) the stadium held up to 28,000 people, mostly standing-room, even though security measures would reduce its actual capacity to about 22,000. Its relatively meager size made Estudiantes use Boca Juniors' Bombonera stadium for its Copa Libertadores games.

The La Plata Museum (Spanish: Museo de La Plata) is a natural history museum in La Plata, Argentina. It is part of the Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo (Natural Sciences School) of the National University of La Plata. The building, 135 meters (443 feet) long, today houses 3 million fossils and relics (including 44,000 botanical items), an amphitheatre opened in 1992, and a 58,000-volume library, serving over 400 university researchers. Around 400,000 visitors (8% of whom are from outside Argentina) pass through its doors yearly, including a thousand visiting researchers.
