The village is situated close to the River Trent, about 8 miles (13 km) south-west from the city and county town of Lincoln, and on the county boundary with Nottinghamshire. The parish church is dedicated to All Saints and is a Grade I listed building dating from the 12th century, although it was destroyed by fire in 1342 and rebuilt directly after. In 1898 it was extensively restored and a north aisle was built by Sir Ninian Comper.The 19th-century clergyman and Australian police commander Henry Inman was rector of All Saints for 36 years and is interred in the churchyard.Village amenities include a village hall, post office, heritage centre, The White Hart public house, a Methodist hall, a sports and social club and playing fields, and a Primary School. There is also a miniature railway.

It is located 17 miles west of Lincoln. The parish church of St Cecilia is a small aisleless church almost totally rebuilt in 1879. Fleet Cottage is a rare example of an early north-east Nottinghamshire cottage of the 17th century, with a timber-framed upper storey on a limestone ground floor. Girton has many floodplains from the River Trent that support many species of plants and wildlife such as Meadow Foxtail and meadowsweetA reference to Girton appears in John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales (1870-72). The village was said to have 46 houses and a property value of £2,056.

The parish was originally an extra-parochial area, and was once populated, although not in more than single figures since census records began.The parish is bound by the Carlton Rack river to the west (which forms the border with Sutton on Trent) and to the east a lagoon and a brook separates it from Girton civil parish.
