Easton Gardens

Easton is a village on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, England. The village is situated at Tophill, within the centre of the island. As with the rest of Portland's villages and settlements, Easton, including the settlements Reforne and Straits, has been designated as a conservation area, as it is a place of special architectural and historic interest. Easton, Wakeham and Reforne were designated pre-1974.The village has a small square with many shops and shopping arcade, three churches, a small park, and other amenities, including various pubs, as well as the nearby Secondary school Royal Manor Arts College, (which has now been closed down, with the only secondary school on the island being Atlantic Academy Portland). Along with Fortuneswell, Easton is the main hub of the Isle of Portland's activities. St George's Centre and The George Inn lies within the Reforne area of Easton, and provides facilities for many local events.

All Saints Church is a Church of England church in Easton, on the Isle of Portland, Dorset. It was consecrated in 1917 and has been a Listed Grade II building since September 1978. The church succeeded to the rights, privileges, registers and silver of the St George's Church. It has been described as the finest ecclesiastical building on Portland – though somewhat hidden at its position. The church remains active to date, as part of the Portland Parish - a host of three churches; St. John's Church (St John the Baptist), All Saints Church and the Avalanche Memorial Church (St Andrew's Church).

Easton railway station was the terminus of the Portland Branch Railway, which operated on the Isle of Portland in the south of the English county of Dorset. The station opened with the Easton and Church Hope Railway, one of the constituent parts of a complex line, on 1 September 1902. The line past Portland station was technically a separate railway, although the branch was operated as one line throughout. Easton was closed from 11 November 1940 to 1 January 1945 following air raid damage. Although the station closed to passengers in 1952 regular freight kept the line in use until 1965. The station was demolished in the 1970s.

Tophill is a gently sloping area of land on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, England, rising from sea level at Portland Bill to 151 metres (495 ft) near HMP The Verne at its northern end. On Tophill are five of the settlements on the island: Easton, Weston, Southwell, the Grove and Wakeham. Portland stone lies under Tophill, and the strata decline at a shallow angle of around 1.5 degrees from their peak down to sea level. The lower northern end of the island is called Underhill. In the north-west corner of Tophill is Tout Quarry, whilst the nature reserve King Barrow Quarry lies at the north-east. Near the northernmost point lies the area known as New Ground used as a lookout point, in front of which sits the Portland Cenotaph.

The Portland Windmills are two disused stone towers which were used as windmills from at least the early 17th century. They are located south of Easton village and the east of Weston village. The towers, which are relatively short mills with conical caps, stand approximately 135 metres apart. They have been separate Grade II Listed monuments since September 1978, and are the only historic windmill remains to survive in Dorset.

St George's Centre is a former school, built in the 19th century, and now a community information and activity centre on the Isle of Portland, Dorset, England. It is located in the area of Reforne, near the village of Easton. Both the centre and its community hall, which was formerly the school assembly hall, have been a Grade II listed since 1978.

Jordans Mine is a Portland Stone mine on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, England. In 2016 it was the biggest mine for this stone, at some places 9 m (30 ft) high. It had previously been a quarry site since the 19th century. Following the successful planning application and the signing of the Unilateral Undertaking the mining began in 2008 and became 100% mining in early 2016. There are several miles of tunnels and this network dramatically reduces the impact on the environment and local residenceMining minimises the impact on the conservation area and on the listed buildings. The access road is situated within an existing quarry and landscape and away from the sensitive properties so as not to affect the settings of the listed buildings or the conservation area. The Portal location is in the base of the existing quarry so it would not be visible other than by looking over the quarry edge.Jordans Mine produces Jordans Basebed, Jordans Whitbed, Fancy Beach Whitbed, Grove Whitbed, Jordans Roach, Ostrea Patch Reef Whitbed and is also part of Inmosthay Quarry which is in the centre of the Isle of Portland. Albion Stone holds open days to the local residence once a year. Visitors are taken around the mine by the mine manager to view the operations that take place over 20 m (70 ft) below Portland.

The George Inn is a Grade II-listed 18th-century public house on the Isle of Portland, Dorset, England. It is situated within the village of Easton, at the west end of the hamlet of Reforne. The pub is located close to St George's Church and St George's Centre.

Portland Independent Top Whitbed is the variety of Portland stone used to build the Ashton Memorial in Lancaster. It originates from Independent quarries on the Isle of Portland, Dorset, England.

The Isle of Portland is a tied island, 6 kilometres (4 mi) long by 2.7 kilometres (1.7 mi) wide, in the English Channel. The southern tip, Portland Bill lies 8 kilometres (5 mi) south of the resort of Weymouth, forming the southernmost point of the county of Dorset, England. A barrier beach called Chesil Beach joins Portland with mainland England. The A354 road passes down the Portland end of the beach and then over the Fleet Lagoon by bridge to the mainland. The population of Portland is 13,417.Portland is a central part of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site on the Dorset and east Devon coast, important for its geology and landforms. Portland stone, a limestone famous for its use in British and world architecture, including St Paul's Cathedral and the United Nations Headquarters, continues to be quarried here. Portland Harbour, in between Portland and Weymouth, is one of the largest man-made harbours in the world. The harbour was made by the building of stone breakwaters between 1848 and 1905. From its inception it was a Royal Navy base, and played prominent roles during the First and Second World Wars; ships of the Royal Navy and NATO countries worked up and exercised in its waters until 1995. The harbour is now a civilian port and popular recreation area, and was used for the 2012 Olympic Games. The name Portland is used for one of the British Sea Areas, and has been exported as the name of North American and Australian towns.

Wakeham is a hamlet near the village of Easton, in Tophill on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, England. It is situated between the Straits part of Easton, and Pennsylvania Castle. As with the rest of Portland's villages and settlements, Wakeham has been designated as a conservation area, as it is a place of special architectural and historic interest. Easton, Wakeham and Reforne were designated pre-1974. The hamlet features a distinctively wide road running through it, once built to allow space for horse-drawn carts transporting stone by road. Many of Wakeham's older buildings of the 17th and 18th century survive.

Perryfield Quarry is an operational stone quarry and part butterfly nature reserve located on the Isle of Portland, Dorset, England. It is situated towards the middle of the island, east of the village of Weston and south of the hamlet of Wakeham. The reserve section is now a valued home for a number of butterfly species, while the working quarry area is one of the largest active quarries on Portland. The quarry is owned by Portland Stone Firms Ltd, along with Broadcroft and Coombefield Quarries. The firm is the largest landholder on the island.King Barrow Quarry, located close to the area of New Ground, in the north-east corner area of Tophill, is also another Portland nature reserve. Broadcroft Quarry is also a part butterfly reserve.
