Newlands, Wellington

Newlands College is a state coeducational secondary school located in the Wellington, New Zealand suburb of Newlands. Opened in February 1970, the school has a roll of 1148 students as of April 2023.The current principal is Grant Jones. The current deputy principals are Deb Mills, Cornelios Floratos and Susan McDiarmid. John Murdoch, former deputy principal, is now the current principal of Taita College. The school colours are white, red and blue. The school offers several art, sport and recreation options, along with each student belonging to a house.

Paparangi, one of the northern suburbs of Wellington in New Zealand, lies approximately 10 km north of the city centre, north-east of Johnsonville, north-west of Newlands and south of Grenada and Woodridge. The population was 2,841 at the time of the 2013 census, an increase of 96 from the 2006 census population.The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of "flat sky" for the Māori language name Paparangi.The suburb has a small local shopping-centre and a low-decile primary school.The area, formerly in small farms and part of Newlands, became a dormitory suburb of Wellington, with major subdivisions in the early 1960s adding about a hundred houses a year. Beazley Homes of Tauranga (owned by Barry Beazley) was a major developer.Some of the street names are the first names of children living in the area then or of children whose parents became involved in development of the suburb (Cara Crescent, Mark Avenue and Lynda Avenue take their names from children of Barry Beazley).In 1991 a new landfill opened in Grenada, with direct access via an overbridge to the adjacent motorway. A road extension would give Newlands and Paparangi access to the motorway, but the Grenada Village Progressive Association expressed concerns about any increase in traffic and in car speeds. From 1994 the Wellington City Council consulted with residents, and in 2009 the Mayor opened the "Mark Avenue Extension" connecting the two areas.

Woodridge is one of the northern suburbs of Wellington, New Zealand, north of Newlands and Paparangi.

The Belmont Viaduct was a railway viaduct in Paparangi, New Zealand. The viaduct was originally built by the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company as part of the Wellington-Manawatu line. When opened in 1885, with its original kauri wood structure, it was the largest of its kind in New Zealand. At the time it was reputed to be the largest wooden viaduct in the world, however this claim was largely disputed.The viaduct played a role in the development of early infrastructure in Wellington, as it opened up the northern boundaries of the city, as well as providing access to the wider hinterlands of Horowhenua and Manawatu.

Johnsonville is a large suburb in northern Wellington, New Zealand. It is seven kilometres north of the city centre, at the top of the Ngauranga Gorge, on the main route to Porirua (State Highway 1). It is commonly known by locals as "J'ville".

The Johnsonville Branch, also known as the Johnsonville Line, is a commuter branch line railway from the main Railway Station of Wellington, New Zealand to the northern suburb of Johnsonville via Ngaio and Khandallah. Transdev Wellington operates the trains under contract from the Greater Wellington Regional Council. In 2001, an estimated 1,043 passengers used the line on a working day.The line has seven tunnels and eight stations. Four stations (Crofton Downs, Awarua Street, Box Hill, and Raroa) are on a curve. There are three crossing loops: at Ngaio and Khandallah stations and below Wadestown in the Ngaio Gorge.

Ōhāriu, previously spelled Ohariu and then Ōhariu, is a New Zealand parliamentary electorate returning one Member of Parliament to the House of Representatives. It first existed from 1978 to 1993, and was recreated for the 2008 election. In 2008, it was the successor to Ohariu-Belmont, first contested at the first mixed-member proportional (MMP) election in 1996. Through its existence Ohariu-Belmont was represented by Peter Dunne, leader of the United Future party. Dunne contested and won the recreated electorate in 2008. He announced on 21 August 2017 that he would not stand in the 2017 general election.

Churton Park is a suburb 1.5 km north of Johnsonville in Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand. It was established in the 1970s.The suburb includes Churton Park Reserve which includes a recreational sports field, two primary schools and a kindergarten. The Churton Park Community Centre, which is managed and staffed by Wellington City Council, is also located in the Village.

The Ngauranga Gorge is in the Wellington Region of New Zealand. State Highway 1 runs through the gorge, a vital link between central Wellington City and its northern suburbs and Porirua City and the Kāpiti Coast; it is the main route north out of Wellington. It is 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) long and has a grade of approximately 8 percent. Sixty-five thousand vehicles a day travel through it, and it connects the Wellington Urban Motorway with the Johnsonville–Porirua Motorway. The name is derived from the former Ngā Hauranga pā at the foot of the gorge. Its spelling was simplified after the Second World War.

Ngauranga is a suburb of New Zealand's capital city, Wellington, in the lower North Island. Situated on the western bank of Wellington Harbour, it lies to the north of the centre of the city. The name comes from the Maori-language ngā ūranga, meaning "the landing place (for canoes)". The Ngauranga Railway Station was known as "Ngahauranga" when it opened in 1874. It is lightly populated, and for statistical purposes is divided into Ngauranga East and Ngauranga West by Statistics New Zealand. At the 2001 New Zealand census, Ngauranga West registered a population of zero, while Ngauranga East had a population of 39. This represented an increase of 18.2% or 6 people since the previous census in 1996.The low population is due to Ngauranga's rugged terrain. It includes the Ngauranga Gorge, through which State Highway 1 passes on its route out of Wellington to Porirua and the west coast. To the east, State Highway 2 runs wedged between hills and Wellington Harbour on its route from Wellington to the Hutt Valley, Wairarapa, and beyond. Alongside State Highway 2 is the Hutt Valley Line portion of the Wairarapa Line railway, which includes a station in Ngauranga served by frequent commuter trains. The North Island Main Trunk railway also passes through Ngauranga, via two tunnels of the Tawa Flat deviation, with a bridge between them crossing the Ngauranga Gorge. The small amount of usable land in Ngauranga is primarily used for commercial and industrial activity, though there are some houses on the hill overlooking the motorway.

Fort Kelburne was a coastal artillery battery located in Wellington, New Zealand. Built between 1885 and 1887 in the vicinity of Ngauranga, following fears of an impending war with Russia, the fort was used for training purposes, later receiving renovations during the First World War. Fort Kelburne, along with Fort Buckley in Kaiwharawhara, were the first coastal defences to be built in a ring that was designed to protect Wellington Harbour. Following the end of the war, the fort ceased to be occupied by the New Zealand Army, with ownership transferring to the Public Works Department. In the course of its existence, no shots were ever fired in anger. In 1963, the fort was completely demolished by the Public Works Department to make way for two large connecting roads between the Wellington Urban Motorway and Ngauranga Gorge. As a result, little remains of the former installation.

The Ngauranga Interchange at the foot of the Ngauranga Gorge is a major interchange in the suburb of Ngauranga, in Wellington City, New Zealand. The Ngauranga interchange connects State Highways 1 and 2 with each other and also to Hutt Road for access to the interisland ferry terminals and alternative access to Wellington City. The majority of traffic in and out of Wellington City uses this interchange. It is the southern terminus of State Highway 2.
