Widdrington railway station

Widdrington Station and Stobswood is a civil parish in the county of Northumberland, England. It has a population of 2,767 (as of 2011) and is 6 miles (9.7 km) north-northeast of Morpeth. It includes the settlements of Widdrington Station and Stobswood.

Widdrington Castle is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and the site of a former medieval tower house and castle at Widdrington, Northumberland, England of which only earthworks now remain. The location is within a mile or so of the North Sea. The property was owned by the Widdrington family from the 12th century. In 1341 Gerard Widdrington was granted a licence to crenellate the house, which was later rebuilt in the early 17th century as a manor house. Engravings show a substantial tower with bartizans (projecting turrets) at the corners, similar to the surviving structure at nearby Belsay Castle. The Scottish lord Claud Hamilton was an exile at the castle in 1583. At the Union of the Crowns, James VI and I came to Widdrington on 8 April 1603. Anne of Denmark and her children stayed in the castle on their way to London on 7 June 1603.William Widdrington married the heiress of Blankney Hall, Lincolnshire in 1643 and the castle ceased to be the main family residence. The estates of a later William Widdrington were sequestrated, and sold by the Crown, as a result of his attainder for treason for his part in the Jacobite rising of 1715. The castle was reported to be in a ruinous condition in 1720. New owners began a rebuild in 1772 but the structure was destroyed by fire. A second attempt at reconstruction was more successful but the new Gothic-style castle was demolished in 1862.

Chibburn Preceptory (also known as Low Chibburn Preceptory) are the ruins of a Medieval/Post-Medieval Hospitaller preceptory near Widdrington in Northumberland, England. The preceptory was first recorded in 1313, and it was abolished in 1540 when all its lands were passed to the Crown and later the Widdrington family. Low Chibburn had several uses, ranging from a hospital to a dowager house before being razed by French invaders in 1691. The preceptory buildings have undergone repair and restoration by Northumberland County Council, and the site is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument protected by law.

Longhirst railway station served the village of Longhirst, Morpeth, England from 1847 to 1964 on the East Coast Main Line.

Longhirst is a village and civil parish in Northumberland, England, located approximately 2.5 miles (4.0 km) northeast of the town of Morpeth. It originally developed as an estate village serving Longhirst Hall, a Grade II* listed building built in 1824 by architect John Dobson for landowner William Lawson. The Lawson family became rich after the discovery of coal on their land, leading to the opening of Longhirst Colliery, which operated from 1868 to 1896. After use as a school and conference centre, Longhirst Hall has now been converted to private apartments. The village was formerly served by Longhirst railway station, on the Newcastle to Berwick line, from 1847 to 1951. Formerly part of the parish of Bothal since Norman times, Longhirst became a separate parish in 1875. The name "Longhirst" means 'Long wooded hill'.

Ellington is a small village in the civil parish of Ellington and Linton, on the coast of Northumberland, England. Ellington is 4 miles (6 km) from Ashington, 6 miles (10 km) from Morpeth and 20 miles (32 km) north of Newcastle upon Tyne. Ellington was the site of the last remaining operational deep coal mine in North East England. Ellington Colliery closed on 26 January 2005. It was the last deep mine in the UK to extract coal from under the sea. The name of the village is thought to derive from the Saxon meaning descendants of Ella. Today, Ellington is made up almost exclusively of private housing. It has one school, village shops, and one public house, the Plough Inn.

Ellington Colliery (also known as The Big E), was a coal mine situated to the south of the village of Ellington in Northumberland, England. The colliery was the last deep coal mine in the north east of England (also known as the Great Northern Coalfield). At one time, the deepest part of the mine was 800 metres (2,600 ft) and it extended 15 miles (24 km) under the North Sea. During the 1980s, the pit (along with Lynemouth Colliery) was known as the biggest undersea mine in the world and produced 69% of the mined coal in Northumberland. Ellington had several faces for mining and was known for winning coal from under the North Sea, before flooding caused the early closure of the mine.
