Tehachapi ( ; Kawaiisu: Tihachipia, meaning "hard climb") is a city in Kern County, California, United States, in the Tehachapi Mountains, at an elevation of 3,970 feet (1,210 m), between the San Joaquin Valley and the Mojave Desert. Tehachapi is 35 miles (56 km) east-southeast of Bakersfield, and 20 miles (32 km) west of Mojave. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10 square miles (26 km2) and a population of 14,414. The Tehachapi area is known for the nearby Tehachapi Loop (a popular railfan site), the Pacific Crest Trail and for the excellent conditions for the aerial sport of gliding.

The Tehachapi Railroad Depot was a railroad station in Tehachapi, California. The Southern Pacific Railroad built the line through the area in 1876. The depot was built in 1904 after the original station building was destroyed in a fire. the railroad founded the town of Tehachapi and drew the residents of nearby Tehichipa to the new settlement. The depot served a significant section of railroad, as it was located near the Tehachapi Loop and was one of the most active rural stations during World War II. The station later served as a warehouse and a railroad office.In 2008, the depot burned down; it was rebuilt in 2009 and now serves as the Tehachapi Depot Railroad Museum with historic railroad artifacts.The original depot was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 20, 1999. Although the original depot no longer exists, it remains on the National Register.

Monroe High School is the main continuation high school that is located just outside Tehachapi, California. Monroe has one principal, a secretary and office clerk, two part-time counselors and three full-time teachers. The school is also the site of the Monroe Independent Study Center (formerly Summit Independent Study Center), and Tehachapi Adult School. Monroe is part of the Tehachapi Unified School District. After the 2010–2011 school year, the district plans on moving Monroe High School to the former junior high school building.

Tehachapi Municipal Airport (IATA: TSP, ICAO: KTSP, FAA LID: TSP) is in Tehachapi, Kern County, California. It covers 264 acres (107 ha) and has one runway.The airport was established in 1929 originally to support an air mail route between Tehachapi and Bakersfield. After the 1952 Kern County earthquake Tehachapi became inaccessible by roads or rail, and the airport saw an emergency relief airlift for several weeks. There are hangars and an industrial park on the south side of the airport, and in 2009 the city was planning an expansion to include a taxiway and hangars on the north side.In 1974 Golden West Airlines scheduled de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otters to Los Angeles (LAX). The flight is in the August 1974 OAG but not in the March 1975 edition. Golden Age Flight Museum moved to temporary quarters in 2022.

Tehachapi High School is the single comprehensive high school serving students in grades 9–12 in the Tehachapi, California area. Tehachapi High School is part of the Tehachapi Unified School District, a K-12 school district. Tehachapi High School has a current enrollment of 1,500-plus, with district enrollment of approximately 4,900. The high school was founded circa 1928. Classes were held in a home originally built by Russell Peery in the 1890s in Cummings Valley. The house was dismantled and moved to Tehachapi where it served as the high school until the original high school buildings could be completed. The current campus was opened in 2003 after the community passed a $1.5 million bond in 1999 for the purpose of building a new high school. It is divided into wings with an open plan. There are no interior hallways at Tehachapi High. The design originated with a Central Valley school without the Tehachapi Valley's wind. When the school first opened, students were injured by the wind slamming doors open and shut, requiring changes to the doors' construction.The gym and cafeteria underwent major transformations to give it a cafe-like feel with bar stools, booths, and individual seating to accommodate nearly 1,700 students using funds that could not be used to pay staff or for educational purposes. Over a summer, the Associated Student Body team got together to effect the changes.

Mountain Valley Airport (FAA LID: L94) is a privately owned public-use airport located two nautical miles (4 km) southeast of the central business district of Tehachapi, in Kern County, California, United States.The airport is used for glider operations and training. It was established for its close proximity to various advantageous lift effects for soaring where the Sierra Nevada, Tehachapi Mountains and the Mojave Desert meet. The Skylark North Glider School performs glider flight training for civilians as well as for the US Air Force Test Pilot School (from Edwards AFB), the National Test Pilot School (from the Mojave Air & Space Port), NASA and others. Due to the ongoing training contract with the US Air Force Test Pilot School, most NASA Space Shuttle pilots who came from the Air Force have probably received glider training at Mountain Valley Airport.

Golden Hills is a census-designated place (CDP) in the Tehachapi Mountains, in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 8,656 at the 2010 census, up from 7,434 at the 2000 census. Golden Hills adjoins the city of Tehachapi on the west.

Old Town (formerly, Williamsburg) is an unincorporated community in Kern County, California. It is located 3 miles (4.8 km) west-northwest of Tehachapi, at an elevation of 3829 feet (1167 m).The name Williamsburg honored James E. Williams, a businessman. A post office operated at Old Town from 1877 (being transferred from Tehichipa) to 1885.

The Tehachapi Energy Storage Project (TSP) is a 8MW/32MWh lithium-ion battery-based grid energy storage system at the Monolith Substation of Southern California Edison (SCE) in Tehachapi, California, sufficient to power between 1,600 and 2,400 homes for four hours. At the time of commissioning in 2014, it was the largest lithium-ion battery system operating in North America and one of the largest in the world. TSP is considered to be a modern-day energy storage pioneer with significant accomplishments that have proven the viability of utility-scale energy storage using lithium-ion technology. While originally envisioned as a research and development project, TSP operated as a distribution-level resource for SCE and for calendar year 2020, SCE reported that TSP operated in the wholesale energy market with revenue exceeding operating and maintenance costs. In 2021, SCE began the decommissioning of TSP, which was followed by formal decommissioning by state regulators in 2022. The physical dismantlement of TSP is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.

Monolith (formerly, Aqueduct) is an unincorporated community in the Tehachapi Valley, in Kern County, California.The community is located 4.5 miles (7.2 km) east of Tehachapi, at an elevation of 3,966 feet (1,209 m) in the southern Sierra Nevada and eastern Tehachapi Pass areas.
