Sandy Hook has a post office with ZIP code 23153.One version of the etymological history of the name "Sandy Hook" has it that at a prominent local bend on Route 522 (opposite what is now "Wood's Store", and probably before the road was surfaced), heavy rain would leave a silty, sandy residue on the road. At these times, the local population would refer to this bend as "the sandy hook" in giving directions. Sandy Hook is one of the seven original villages in Goochland County.

Shady Grove School is a historic Rosenwald school located at Gum Spring, Louisa County, Virginia. It was built in 1925, and is a one-story, frame school building. It has a side gabled, metal roof and is sheathed in plain wood weatherboards. It features an engaged corner porch. The school was used until 1962 when students were transferred to an elementary school approximately 5 miles away.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. In 2017 the Virginia Department of Historic Resources approved the erection of a state historic marker at the school.

It measures 16 feet by 24 feet and has a gable roof. The shop remains in operation.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

Byrd Presbyterian Church is a historic Presbyterian church located at Goochland in western Goochland County, Virginia on Dogtown Road. The original building dates from 1838 and is still in active use today. It is a two-story, rectangular brick structure with a slate gable roof. The interior of the church measures 28 feet by 40 feet. Also on the property is a contributing church cemetery with graves dating back to at least the 1850s.The original congregation began in 1748, and erected a dedicated building on Byrd Creek in 1759. Notable theologian Samuel Davies was one of the founding members.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

The Dover Slave Quarter Complex is a set of five historic structures located on Brookview Farm near Manakin-Sabot, Goochland County, Virginia. They were built as one-story, two-unit, brick structures with steep gable roofs for housing African-American slaves. The houses are arranged in a wide arc, measuring 360 ft (110 m) in length. The center dwelling had a frame second-story added and its brick walls covered by siding when it was converted to an overseer's house. It has a recent rear addition. In addition to the center dwelling, one of the former slave dwellings serves as the farm office, one serves as a woodworking shop, and the remaining two are used for storage. Also on the farm are the two early 20th-century contributing farm structures; one is an impressively long dairy barn, and there are two tenant houses, silos, and storage buildings.The structures were listed as a group on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Lock-Keeper's House is a historic home located near Cedar Point, Goochland County, Virginia. It was built about 1836, and is a two-story frame structure resting on a stone foundation of whitewashed, rough-faced, uncoursed ashlar. It has a shallow gable roof and a shed roof porch that extends the length of the building. It was built to serve Lock Number 7 at Cedar Point and is the last remaining lock-keeper's house of the James River and Kanawha Canal system. It addition to being a residence, the lock-keeper's house served as a tavern and furnished accommodations for passengers and canal boat crews.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Goochland is a census-designated place (CDP) in and the county seat of Goochland County, Virginia, United States. The population as of the 2010 census was 861. The community is also known as Goochland Courthouse or by an alternative spelling, Goochland Court House. It derives its name from the fact that the community is the location of the county's court house, while the county in turn is named for Sir William Gooch, 1st Baronet, the royal lieutenant governor of Virginia from 1727 to 1749.
