Fulda

St. Mary's Abbey is a Benedictine nunnery in Fulda, Hesse, Germany. The St. Mary's Abbey was founded in 1626. The first decades were very troubled as a result of the Thirty Years' War: the sisters often had to flee from enemy troops and the abbey was looted several times. The nunnery was able to evade destruction during the secularization of 1802 by turning itself into a girls' school. During the Kulturkampf, the sisters went into exile in France from 1875 to 1887. In 1898, the nunnery was elevated to the status of abbey. In 1942, although most religious houses in Germany were commandeered by the National Socialists, the nuns were able to avoid eviction by offering the use of most of the premises to the Wehrmacht. After becoming closer in their way of life over a period of many years to the Beuronese Congregation within the Benedictine Confederation, the abbey finally became a member in 1982. The nuns engage in various handicrafts, run the abbey shop and have built a compost activator.

The University of Fulda (also: Alma mater Adolphiana), was founded in 1734 by Adolphus von Dalberg and existed until 1805. Most of the students and professors were Catholic. Under Prince-Bishop Heinrich von Bibra Protestants were also admitted; from 1777, with the sole exception of the theological faculty, a Protestant could acquire a degree in any faculty of the university.During 71 years of its existence the university had about 4100 students. 935 of them came from the town of Fulda and approximately 400 from the area of the later circles Fulda. Most of foreign students came from France, Nassau and Westphalia or from the enclaves in Hessen and Thuringia. At the beginning the university had four faculties: Theology, philosophy, medicine and law. In the beginning the chairs of the theology faculty have been taken by Jesuits – up to abolition of the Jesuit Order in Fulda in 1773 – as well as by Benedictines. After the suppression of the Jesuit Order by Pope Clement XIV in 1773 the university came entirely into the hands of the Benedictines, who were finally obliged to discontinue it in 1805, in consequence of the Napoleonic secularization of Fulda Abbey in 1802. The baroque building was constructed from 1731 to 1734 according to the plans of the court architect Andreas Gallasini. The assembly hall of the old university was served in 1803-1902 as a Protestant church, today can be used for festive arrangements. The university was closed in 1805 by the sovereign of the secularized Fulda, William I of the Netherlands.

Fulda Cathedral (German: Fuldaer Dom, also Sankt Salvator) is the former abbey church of Fulda Abbey and the burial place of Saint Boniface. Since 1752 it has also been the cathedral of the Diocese of Fulda, of which the Prince-Abbots of Fulda were created bishops. The abbey was dissolved in 1802 but the diocese and its cathedral have continued. The dedication is to Christ the Saviour (Latin: Salvator). The cathedral constitutes the high point of the Baroque district of Fulda, and is a symbol of the town.

The Abbey of Fulda (German Kloster Fulda, Latin Abbatia Fuldensis), from 1221 the Princely Abbey of Fulda (Fürstabtei Fulda) and from 1752 the Prince-Bishopric of Fulda (Fürstbistum Fulda), was a Benedictine abbey and ecclesiastical principality centered on Fulda, in the present-day German state of Hesse. The monastery was founded in 744 by Saint Sturm, a disciple of Saint Boniface. After Boniface was buried at Fulda, it became a prominent center of learning and culture in Germany, and a site of religious significance and pilgrimage through the 8th and 9th centuries. The Annals of Fulda, one of the most important sources for the history of the Carolingian Empire in the 9th century, were written there. In 1221 the abbey was granted an imperial estate to rule and the abbots were thereafter princes of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1356, Emperor Charles IV bestowed the title "Archchancellor of the Empress" (Erzkanzler der Kaiserin) on the prince-abbot. The growth in population around Fulda would result in its elevation to a prince-bishopric in the second half of the 18th century. Although the abbey was dissolved in 1802 and its principality was secularized in 1803, the diocese of Fulda continues to exist.

Nassau-Orange-Fulda (sometimes also named Fulda and Corvey) was a short-lived principality of the Holy Roman Empire from 1803 to 1806. It was created for William Frederick, the son and heir of William V, Prince of Orange, the ousted stadtholder of the abolished Dutch Republic after the Batavian Revolution of 1795.

The Diocese of Fulda (Latin Dioecesis Fuldensis) is a Roman Catholic diocese in the north of the German state of Hessen. It is a suffragan diocese of the Archdiocese of Paderborn. The bishop's seat is in Fulda Cathedral.

St. Michael's Church (German: Michaelskirche) in Fulda, Hesse, is considered to be the oldest replica of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Germany, built in the Carolingian architectural style (Pre-Romanesque) on behalf of abbot Eigil in the years (820 – 822). It served as a burial chapel to Fulda monastery founded in 744, which was one of the prominent cultural centres of the early Middle Ages. St. Michael stands in the neighbourhood of Fulda cathedral, and the architect was probably the monk Racholf (d. 824). The rotunda and crypt remain preserved from this time. In the 10th and 11th century, the church was extended from the rotunda, and a west tower was built. In 1618 the roof over the rotunda was rebuilt with a conical roof, and in 1715 – 1716 a chapel was added to the north side. It was restored in 1853. Wall paintings in the interior date from the 11th century.

Fulda station (IATA: ZEE) is an important transport hub of the German railway network in the east Hessian city of Fulda. It is used by about 20,000 travellers each day. It is classified by Deutsche Bahn as a category 2 station. It is a stop for Intercity-Express, Intercity services and regional services. The original station was opened as part of the Frankfurt–Bebra railway in 1866. This was destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt after the war. The station was adapted in the 1980s for the Hanover–Würzburg high-speed railway.

Fulda University of Applied Sciences (officially named Hochschule Fulda – University of Applied Sciences) is located in the city of Fulda, within the Fulda district of Hesse, southwest Germany. Formerly known as Fachhochschule Fulda, it was founded as the fifth state University of Applied Sciences in Hesse in 1974. Today, Fulda University of Applied Sciences is the first German University of Applied Sciences to have been conferred the right to award PhD degrees.

Giesel is a small river of Hesse, Germany. It flows into the Fulda near the town Fulda.

Künzell is a municipality in the district of Fulda, in Hesse, Germany. It is situated 3 km east of Fulda. It is twinned with the English village of Rustington. The subdivisions are: Künzell/Bachrain, Pilgerzell, Engelhelms, Dirlos (with Loheland), Dietershausen, Keulos, Wissels and Dassen.

Fliede (in its upper course: Hermannswasser) is a river of Hesse, Germany. It flows into the Fulda south of the town Fulda.
