St. Casimir Parish Historic District

St. Casimir Parish is a Catholic parish in South Bend, Indiana, United States. Founded in 1898. It is one of the Roman Catholic parishes in the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend. It is a central contributing property in the St. Casimir Parish Historic District. Weekend masses are at Saturday 4:00 p.m. (English, 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month only), Sunday 9:30 a.m. (English) and 11:30 a.m. (Spanish)

Portage Township is one of thirteen townships in St. Joseph County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of the 2020 census, its population was 94,571.

South Bend is a city in and the county seat of St. Joseph County, Indiana, United States, on the St. Joseph River near its southernmost bend, from which it derives its name. At the 2020 census, the city had a total of 103,453 residents and is the fourth-largest city in Indiana. The metropolitan area had a population of 324,501 in 2020, while its combined statistical area had 812,199. The city is located just south of Indiana's border with Michigan. The area was settled in the early 19th century by fur traders and was established as a city in 1865. The St. Joseph River shaped South Bend's economy through the mid-20th century. River access assisted heavy industrial development such as that of the Studebaker Corporation, the Oliver Chilled Plow Company, and other large corporations. The population of South Bend declined after 1960, when it peaked at 132,445. This was chiefly due to migration to suburban areas as well as the demise of Studebaker and other heavy industry. Today, the largest industries in South Bend are health care, education, small business, and tourism. Remaining large corporations based in the area include Crowe, Honeywell, and AM General. The city's economy and culture are influenced by the nearby University of Notre Dame.The city was featured in national news coverage of former mayor Pete Buttigieg, a candidate in the 2020 Democratic Party presidential primaries and current Secretary of Transportation in the Biden administration.

The Engman Public Natatorium was a public swimming pool that operated in South Bend, Indiana between 1922 and 1978. Sources describe it as being the largest indoor swimming pool in the state of Indiana when it first opened in 1922. The pool has a history of racial exclusion, barring African Americans completely between 1922 and 1936, then segregating against them (by day) between 1936 and 1950.In 2010, after sitting vacant since 1978, the building re-opened as the home of the Indiana University South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center. As of 2016, the Center continues to operate out of the building. They offer tours and share the history of segregation and civil rights in South Bend, as well as the experiences of the African American, Latinx, and LGBTQ communities in the city.

The Civil Rights Heritage Center (CRHC) is an institution established by Indiana University South Bend as a result of student interest and faculty support as a center for the study and documentation of local civil rights history. Through community involvement, students, faculty, and community members joined forces to push for the restoration of a public building known for its policy of racial discrimination against African Americans as a center for the study of civil rights. Now housed in the former Engman Public Natatorium – South Bend, Indiana's first swimming pool that excluded and then segregated against African Americans for almost thirty years – the CRHC is dedicated to the preservation of the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement, as well as the history of race and ethnic relations in the South Bend area, and seeks to provide education, research, and forums, while examining human rights principles and challenges for future generations. Located within the West Washington National Historic Register District, the Engman Natatorium opened in 1922 as a public swimming pool that limited use to whites and was not fully integrated until 1950. The Natatorium closed in 1978, and sat for decades in a state of disrepair. Thanks to the efforts of students and faculty from Indiana University South Bend, the City of South Bend, the South Bend Heritage Foundation, and the Indiana University Foundation, the building underwent extensive renovations and now functions as the home of the Civil Rights Heritage Center.

Children's Dispensary, also known as Hansel Center, is a historic hospital building located at South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana. The main building was built in 1925, and is a two-story, "T"-plan, Classical Revival style brick building with limestone trim. Also on the property are the contributing garage and surrounding wall dated to the 1910s. The dispensary provided a comprehensive program of general medical care to disadvantaged children.: 5–6  The building was renovated in 2012 to house the Notre Dame Center for Arts and Culture.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

The Museums at Washington and Chapin are several museums that share a campus in South Bend, Indiana. The name is derived from the location, at the corner of Washington Street and Chapin Street in South Bend. Both museums have one common entrance off Thomas Street, one block south of Washington Street. The museums currently include the History Museum and Studebaker National Museum.

The Sister Maura Brannick Health Center is a primary care clinic located in South Bend, Indiana that focuses on medical treatment for uninsured patients. Also known as the Chapin Street Clinic, the clinic provides health and dental care to those who do not have access to Medicare or Medicaid and cannot afford private health insurance. The Health Center relies on 30 volunteer physicians and around 30 student and community volunteers, along with its one staffed physician and two nurses, to meet the needs of its 600 patients.

O'Brien Electric Priming Company is a historic industrial building located at South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana. It consists of four sections built between 1882 and 1917. The building housed the O'Brien Corporation, a paint manufacturer.: 2 It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The Joseph D. Oliver House, also known as Copshaholm, sits on 808 W. Washington Street, at the corner of Chapin Street in South Bend, Indiana. The mansion was built for the Oliver family, founders of the Oliver Chilled Plow Works, and named after the Scottish village of the patriarch. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1895–96, Copshaholm is a 38-room Romanesque Queen Anne house designed by New York architect Charles Alonzo Rich. The furnishings on all three floors are original, giving visitors a glimpse of how the mansion appeared during the 72 years the Oliver family had occupancy. Oak, cherry and mahogany woodwork are found throughout Copshaholm. Leaded glass windows and 14 unique fireplaces add to the beauty of the house. The furnishings include porcelains, glass, silver, prints, and bronzes, including some by Bartolozzi and Lorado Taft. The furniture is all original and display beautiful antiques. Surrounding Copshaholm are 2.5 acres (10,000 m2) of landscaped gardens, including a garden tea house, formal Italianate garden, rose garden, pergola, tennis lawn, and fountain.
