Palmones (river)

Playa de El Rinconcillo is a beach in the Province of Cadiz, Andalusia, Spain, located to the north of the city of Algeciras, near the neighborhood of El Rinconcillo. It looks across to the rock of Gibraltar and La Línea de la Concepción. It extends from the Puente de Acceso Norte access to the mouth of the Rio Palmones, a total length of 2550 metres and an average width of 40 metres including Rinconcillo beach itself and a small cove called La Concha. The beach has two distinct areas, the first is southern part of the beach, surrounded by the suburb of El Rinconcillo and several bars and restaurants, and is characterized by shallow water, making it ideal for swimming. The second area, which is completely undeveloped, is nearest to the river mouth. It is surrounded by the river marshes and the Palmones dunes. This area is steeper and has deeper water than in the first section of the beach. The estuary here attracts numerous birds.

The Torres de Hércules (English: Towers of Hercules) are office buildings in Polígono Industrial Las Marismas, Los Barrios in Province of Cádiz. The building is 100.6 m (330 ft) tall and was completed in October 2009. The telecommunications antenna on top is 26 m (85 ft) tall. Each of the towers is 20 m (66 ft) in diameter. These towers were the tallest in Andalusia until Cajasol Tower was completed in Seville in 2015.

Palmones is a village on the Bay of Gibraltar between Algeciras and La Linea de la Concepcion in the Province of Cádiz in Spain. The San Roque Refinery and Los Barrios commercial centre lie on either side of the town. The village has a sea promenade and beach. The harbor is prone to oil spillage and is a catchment area for waste and garbage of yachts and other boats moored at Algeciras or Gibraltar. The beach is busy in summer and there is a beach bar that serves tapas and drinks. There is a picturesque island in the river mouth, and many tourists wish to swim there. The current is strong and can only be mastered by strong swimmers in low tide conditions. Any tourist who attempts to swim over should seek advice from locals. Palomes has an abundance of fish restaurants.

The Roman kilns of El Rinconcillo (Spanish: Hornos romanos de El Rinconcillo) were Roman kilns located in the Spanish city of Algeciras. They were part of manufacturing complex of Portus Albus, which supplied container for transport to the processing industry of the neighboring city of Iulia Traducta, besides making other ceramic household products and items. The kilns were discovered in 1966 by archaeologist Manuel Sotomayor, just 300 meters from the Playa de El Rinconcillo. The archaeological site consists of two furnaces attached together to form a single unit. The walls are made of ceramic and mud bricks, and the central vaults are supported by a central column and eight arches lining the walls with adobe structures including narrow holes to allow air to circulate. A site of archaeological and historical interest, it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural site in 1969.

The Battle of Carteia was a naval battle of the Second Punic War, fought between the navy of the Roman Republic and a Carthaginian fleet in 206 BC near the ancient city of Carteia in southern Spain. The Roman navy was commanded by Gaius Laelius and the Carthaginian navy by Adherbal. The battle resulted in a Roman victory.

The Los Barrios Power Plant coal-fired power station is based on the Rankine Cycle. It is located in the municipality of Los Barrios in southern Spain, next to the Gibraltar-San Roque Refinery. The plant is kept in reserve for Spain's electricity grid. It provides direct employment to over 200 employees and it has a capacity of 567.5 MW.

Los Cortijillos is a village and district of the Spanish municipality of Los Barrios of the Province of Cádiz, Andalucia, Spain. It is located six kilometres east of the main town of the municipality, just south of Guadacorte, between Gibraltar and Algeciras. As of 2009 had a population of 2,636 inhabitants. There is an industrial park and marshes in the area.

Torre del Almirante (English: Tower of the admiral) is a tower located in Algeciras, Spain. It was declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1985.The date of this tower is unknown and it pre-dates many other towers that were built around the Bay of Gibraltar and south of Algeciras as batteries and watchtowers. This tower was used by the Admiral Egidio Boccanegra in the 14th century during the Siege of Algeciras (1342-1344). The tower appears on a map of 1608 and it was improved after 1704 following the Capture of Gibraltar when the enclave was seen as a potential beachhead for British forces. The tower was put to good use during the Battle of Algeciras in 1801. The tower was then the base for four 24-pounder guns which guarded the northern approach to Algeciras. The tower was used for machine guns during the 20th century. The ruins are now integrated into the park known as Paseo Cornisa.

The auxiliary ship Olterra was a 5,000 ton Italian tanker scuttled by her own crew at Algeciras in the Bay of Gibraltar on 10 June 1940, after the entry of Italy in World War II. She was recovered in 1942 by a special unit of the Decima Flottiglia MAS to be used as an undercover base for manned torpedoes in order to attack Allied shipping at Gibraltar.

Playa del Barranco is a beach in the municipality of Algeciras, southeastern Spain. It overlooks the Bay of Algeciras. It is approximately 500 metres in length. To the north is the Playa de El Rinconcillo.

Paseo Cornisa is a park in Algeciras, Spain. It was inaugurated in May 2007. It stretches for just over a kilometre between Punta del Cementerio and Punta del Almirante in the north of the city near the old cemetery and parallel to the Playa del Barranco and Playa de El Rinconcillo. The park has an area of over 20,000 square metres (220,000 sq ft). Within the park is the Torre del Almirante or Admiral's Tower which dates from the 14th century. In the eighteenth century La Almiranta Battery was near the tower and its role was to defend the city of Algeciras. It worked with the other coastal batteries to defend the area during the Battle of Algeciras in 1801. This battery was partially destroyed by a magazine explosion in the nineteenth century which also damaged the tower. During the Spanish Civil War the battery was used as a place for machine guns. Nearby was an area that was used by firing squads.

Guadacorte is a village and district of the Spanish municipality of Los Barrios in the Province of Cádiz, Spain, between Gibraltar and Algeciras. It is located eight kilometers east of the main town of the municipality and had a population of 1,113 inhabitants in 2009. This town is located on the right bank of the Guadarranque River, which separates the towns of San Roque and Los Barrios. Taraguilla lies to the north across the river, and Los Cortijillos is just to the south. There is a nineteenth-century chapel and a park and wetland with a lake of the same name, which has a permanent population of ducks and cisnes.
