Long Marston, Hertfordshire

Tring Rural is a civil parish in Hertfordshire, England. It includes the villages of Long Marston, Wilstone, Puttenham, and the hamlets of Gubblecote and Astrope. It is largely situated to the north-west of the town of Tring. The town of Tring itself is not part of the parish. The ancient parish of Tring covered an extensive rural area as well as the town itself. The Tring Local Government District was created in 1859 covering the built-up area of the town, but the local government district did not cover the whole parish of Tring. Under the Local Government Act 1894, local government districts became urban districts, and parishes which were part inside and part outside an urban district, such as Tring, had to be split into separate parishes. The parts of the old parish of Tring outside the urban district therefore became the parish of Tring Rural. The first parish meeting for Tring Rural was held on 4 December 1894 at Long Marston, when nominations for the new parish council were made. An election followed on 17 December 1894, and the parish council came into office on 31 December 1894. The council held its first meeting on 2 January 1895 at Long Marston.The parish was enlarged on 1 April 1964, when the neighbouring Puttenham Civil Parish was abolished and its area absorbed into Tring Rural.Tring Rural Parish Council holds its meetings alternately at Wilstone Village Hall, Victory Hall in Long Marston, and Cecilia Hall in Puttenham.At the 2011 Census the population of the civil parish was 1,390.

Wilstone is the name of an English village and a reservoir approximately two miles north-west of Tring, Hertfordshire. The village lies within the civil parish of Tring Rural, close to the boundary with Buckinghamshire. Wilstone reservoir, one of the four Tring reservoirs, lies close to the village.

On 1 April 1964 the parish was abolished and merged with Tring Rural.It was recorded as ‘Puteham’ in the Domesday Book.Puttenham is one of the 51 Thankful Villages in England and Wales that suffered no fatalities during the Great War of 1914 to 1918.

Marston Gate Railway station was a station on the London and North Western Railway - Aylesbury Branch serving the nearby village of Long Marston, Hertfordshire. The station was the only intermediate stop on the line, which ran to Cheddington where it met with the main line.

Buckland is a village and civil parish in Aylesbury Vale district in Buckinghamshire, England. The village is near the boundary with Hertfordshire, close to Aston Clinton. The hamlet of Buckland Wharf is in the parish. It takes its name from its wharf on the Wendover Branch of the Grand Union Canal that passes through the parish.

Tring Reservoirs is a group of four reservoirs close to Tring on the border of Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, England. Their purpose is to feed the Grand Union Canal.The four reservoirs are: Startops End, Marsworth, Tringford and Wilstone. The first three reservoirs adjoin each other, separated only by paths and roads; the fourth, Wilstone Reservoir, is a short distance to the west, close to the village of Wilstone. The reservoirs are a 106.5-hectare (263-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest managed by the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust.

Cheddington is a village and civil parish in the Buckinghamshire district of the ceremonial county of Buckinghamshire, England. The parish has an area of 1,429 acres (578 ha). The village is about 6 miles north-east of Aylesbury and three miles north of Tring in Hertfordshire. The hamlet of Cooks Wharf has grown up where the main road into the village from Pitstone crosses the Grand Union Canal.

Mentmore Stud and Crafton Stud were thoroughbred horse breeding operations that were part of the Mentmore Towers estate on the Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire borders, England. The Crafton stud farm is located at Crafton, Buckinghamshire, approximately one mile from Mentmore Towers and was founded circa 1850 by Baron Mayer de Rothschild. The most notable horses from this era included Rothschild's founding stallion King Tom and his offspring Favonius and Hannah who between them won the Epsom Derby, 1,000 Guineas, Oaks, and St Leger in 1871. Mentmore Stud was built between 1913 and 1914 by Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery to complement his nearby stud farm at Crafton which he had acquired through his 1878 marriage to Baron Mayer de Rothschild's daughter Hannah. The first two stallions to stand at Mentmore were Cicero and Neil Gow. The 5th Earl won The Derby three times with Crafton-bred horses at Ladas, Sir Visto, and Cicero. In 1929 both Crafton and Mentmore studs were inherited by Harry Primrose, 6th Earl of Rosebery who subsequently bred numerous winners; two of the most notable stallions bred at Mentmore were Epsom Derby winners Blue Peter (1939) and Ocean Swell (1944).
