San Felipe Valley, California

Earthquake Valley is a desert valley east of Julian, California, which contains parts of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. It is the location of the Shelter Valley Ranchos subdivision, which is also known as the unincorporated community of Shelter Valley. The official USGS place name for the geologic feature in which Shelter Valley is situated is "Earthquake Valley", and the 1959 USGS Topographic map makes no reference to Shelter Valley. The name of the unincorporated community Shelter Valley is typically used both locally and by the media to refer generally to the geological feature of Earthquake Valley, and it is common for both names to be referenced in publications after the 1962 establishment of the subdivision. Author, poet, artist and primitivist Marshal South lived in and wrote about the general area (including Julian, Mason Valley, Vallicito Valley, and his home in Blair Valley), in a series of articles for Desert Magazine between 1941 and 1948. A number of notable trails pass through the valley, including the Pacific Crest Trail, the California Riding and Hiking Trail, and the Southern Emigrant Trail.

Shelter Valley is a community in San Diego County in the U.S. state of California. The town is located along County Route S2, two miles (3.2 km) south of its intersection with State Route 78 (known as Scissors Crossing) and 12 miles (19 km) east of Julian. It lies within the boundaries of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and the geologic feature known as Earthquake Valley. The Pacific Crest Trail passes along the northern boundary of the community. The Anza Borrego Desert State Park acquired property to the north of the community in 1998, making Shelter Valley the second community (the first being nearby Borrego Springs) to be entirely surrounded by the park. The Sentenac Canyon and Cienega to the east of Scissors crossing were acquired in 1998. The state purchased parts of Rancho San Felipe to the west of Shelter Valley in 2004 that became part of the San Felipe Valley Wild Life Area and increased the contiguous extent of public lands surrounding the hamlet. In less than one year (2011 and 2012), multiple wildfires threatened the small community. The Banner Fire exited state park lands and entered the edge of the community, while the Vallecito Lightning Complex burned into the San Felipe Valley (connecting valley to the north of Earthquake Valley) after menacing the nearby town of Ranchita. All were successfully contained by CAL FIRE and the Shelter Valley Volunteer Fire Dept through the San Diego County Fire Authority and no structures were lost. Improvements to the Shelter Valley fire station were completed in 2012 to provide better quarters for the volunteers that provide protection for the surrounding region.

Rancho Valle de San Felipe was a 9,972-acre (40.36 km2) Mexican land grant in present-day San Diego County, California given in 1846 by Governor Pío Pico to Felipe Castillo. The grant was located in the San Felipe Valley in the Laguna Mountains east of present-day Julian.

Rodriguez Canyon is a steep mountain canyon, in San Diego County, California. It has its head at 33°02′55″N 116°31′43″W at an elevation of 4,120 feet in the Cuyamaca Mountains. Is mouth is at 2,549 feet / 777 meters, at its confluence with Oriflamme Canyon, where they form the head of Vallecito Wash, at the northwestern end of Mason Valley.

Oriflamme Canyon is a steep mountain canyon, in San Diego County, California that descends from its head in the Laguna Mountains, at 32°56′41″N 116°29′45″W, in an arc northwestward then northeastward to join Rodriguez Canyon at the northwest end of Mason Valley, where Vallecito Wash has its source.

Box Canyon in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in San Diego County, is a California Historical Landmark No. 472 listed on September 11, 1950. Box Canyon is a desert canyon and mountain pass on the Historic Southern Emigrant Trail. The US troops under General Stephen Watts Kearny and with US scout Kit Carson found Box Canyon and its pass in October 1846. On January 19, 1847, Kearny was the leader of a wagon train with Colonel Philip St. George Cooke and the Mormon Battalion that used Box Canyon to head west. The group used hand tool to widen and clear Box Canyon so the covered wagons could pass. The road through Box Canyon became the first road into Southern Alta California. The Butterfield Overland Mail Route passed through Box Canyon, also called the Kearney Trail. Overland routed was called, Second Division's route, traveled from Fort Yuma to Warners Pass and followed the Sonora Road, an old Spanish and Mexican trail from Sonora, México to San Diego. The Butterfield Overland route ran form 1857 to 1861. A notable feature is the Rancheti, an 11-foot-tall (3.35 m), 300-pound (136.08 kg) fiberglass Yeti statue erected by local real estate broker Joe Rauh on Montezuma Valley Road in December 2007. The statue was featured on the March 4, 2016 installment of Zippy.
