Sankt Märgen

The Abbey of St. Märgen (German: Kloster St. Märgen) is a former Augustinian canons monastery in St. Märgen in the Black Forest in Germany, which was founded around 1118 under the name Cella Sanctae Mariae ("Chapel of St. Mary"). The German form of the name, Maria-Zell, changed over the centuries through Marienzell, Sante Merien and St. Mergen to the present name of the abbey and village, St. Märgen. The Baroque abbey church of St. Mary of the Assumption (Mariä Himmelfahrt) is today the Roman Catholic parish church of St. Märgen and one of the most important Marian pilgrimage churches in the Archdiocese of Freiburg.The history of the abbey has been researched in depth, especially by church historian Wolfgang Müller (1905–1983), the priest and art historian Manfred Hermann, the teacher and historian, Elisabeth Irtenkauf (born 1931 in Rottweil) and St. Märgen's sexton and local historian, Klaus Hog (born 1966 in Freiburg im Breisgau). The abbey was destroyed five times by fire, the first time in 1284 or shortly before and the last time in 1907. It was rebuilt or restored five times. In art history it has a special significance because one of the most important rococo woodcarvers in southern Germany, Matthias Faller, lived and worked here for a while.

The Hirschbach Falls (German: Hirschbachfälle) lie between St. Peter and Simonswald in that part of the High Black Forest, which is also considered part of the Central Black Forest. The main cascade, which is just under 20 metres high, falls into the Hirschbach stream in an ice age cirque in the valley of Simonswälder Tal, where it empties into the Zweribach, a tributary of the Wild Gutach. Another smaller waterfall lies 300 metres upstream.

The Hexenloch Mill (German: Hexenlochmühle, lit. "Witch's Hole Mill"), formerly the Dreistegen Mill (Dreistegenmühle), lies in the ravine-like Hexenloch (also sometimes called the Hexenloch valley, but not often by the locals) in the Black Forest in Germany between St. Märgen and Furtwangen in the parish of Furtwangen-Neukirch. It was built in 1825 and has been in the same family since 1839.It is the only mill in the Black Forest with two water wheels. In 1825, the part with the smaller water wheel was built as a nail smithy. Later, the part with the larger water wheel was built as a sawmill. Eventually the nail smithy was turned into a workshop for the clockmaking works. The mill and restaurant are open daily all year round, except for 2 weeks in March.

Gütenbach is a municipality in the district of Schwarzwald-Baar in Baden-Württemberg in Germany. It is the home of the Faller toy company.

The Dorf- und Uhrenmuseum Gütenbach (English: Village and Clock Museum Gütenbach) is located in the village of Gütenbach, one of the historic centers of homebased manufacturing of clocks in the Black Forest region of Germany near the town of Furtwangen im Schwarzwald. It features primarily permanent and temporary exhibits on the local history of clockmaking, focussing on the history of making wooden clock movements. There also is a smaller general display on local history and rural living conditions in the 18th and 19th century. Highlights include: An overview of the history of the wooden black forest clock movement A unique collection of homemade tools, jigs and fixtures for making clock movements A broad collection of one of kind black forest clocks, including organ clocks and cuckoo clocks, many made within the village of GütenbachThe Museum is located in the former schoolhouse of the village, next to the church, on a hill above the village center.

St Peter's Abbey in the Black Forest or St. Peter's Abbey, Schwarzwald (German: Kloster St. Peter auf dem Schwarzwald) is a former Benedictine monastery in the village of St. Peter im Schwarzwald, in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

The Roßberg is a mountain, 1,124.7 m above sea level (NHN), in the Black Forest immediately north of Breitnau in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. Hinterzarten, Titisee-Neustadt and St. Märgen are also nearby. On the same ridge just over 1 km to the west is the Hohwart (1123 m) and 2 km to the east, across the Oberbach valley, is the highest mountain in Breitnau municipality: the Weißtannenhöhe (1190 m). On the northwestern side of the mountain the remains of a rampart and ditch system from the end of the 17th century may be made out. In the area of the Roßberg the fortifications (known as Schanzen) run from the Schanzenhäusle via the Ringelschanze to the zur Roßbergschanze. Between the Ringelschanze and the Roßbergschanze there are continuous, linear structures with several triangular bastions. In 1690 battles were fought at Breitnau, but by the early 18th century the fortifications had lost their military significance.Immediately next to the Roßbergschanze lies the Breitnau Friends of Nature house (Naturfreundehaus Breitnau, Roßberg 47.951884°N 8.076394°E / 47.951884; 8.076394).

Breitnau is a municipality in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald in Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany, about 30 kilometres from the city of Freiburg im Breisgau. It is located within the High Black Forest.

The Hohwart (occasionally also Hohwarthöhe or Hohwart-Höhe) is a mountain near the village of Breitnau in the Black Forest in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. It is 1,123 metres high.

The Weißtannenhöhe is a mountain, 1,190 or 1,192 metres high, in the Black Forest in Germany and the highest point in the municipality of Breitnau.

The Ravenna Gorge (German: Ravennaschlucht) is a gorge in the Black Forest in southwest Germany. It is a narrow side valley of the Höllental, through which the Ravenna stream flows. A trail also runs through the ravine as part of the Black Forest Homeland Path (Heimatpfad Hochschwarzwald). The roughly four-kilometre-long gorge runs from the Höllental up to the village of Breitnau on the plateau and lies within its municipal boundaries. The name of the gorge is probably derived from the French word ravine which means "gorge".The wild mountain brook of the Ravenna tumbles over several waterfalls in the gorge. The two biggest falls are the Great Ravenna Fall (Großer Ravennafall) which is 16 metres high and the Little Ravenna Fall (Kleiner Ravennafall) which descends through a height of 6 metres. In former times, there were several water mills along the stream. Some are still visible today within the gorge and one or two are well preserved. At the upper end of the gorge is the mill of Großjockenmühle which dates to 1883 and is a protected monument. A feature of this mill is that, due to the steep descent of the Ravenna, the water is led over the roof of the mill onto the water wheel. The lower part of the gorge is spanned by the 37-metre-high Ravenna Bridge, the viaduct of the Höllental Railway. Also here is Saint Oswald’s Chapel (built 1148) and the Hotel Hofgut Sternen, in which Marie Antoinette stayed in 1770 and Goethe in 1779. In front of the Ravenna Bridge is the Galgenbühl, a knoll about 30 metres high. There used to be a gallows (Galgen) here, where executions were carried out. Later a pavilion was built here which fell into ruins over the course of time. The slopes were originally used as pasture, but in the 1950s the mountain was afforested with spruce and Douglas fir. In 2010 all the trees were felled, however, and a new pavilion erected on the Galgenbühl. It is covered with shingles made of thuja wood.
