The Five Valleys are a group of valleys in Gloucestershire, England, which converge on the town of Stroud at the western edge of the Cotswolds. The Five Valleys are notable both for the landscape, which attracts visitors, and their role in industrial development of Britain starting with the wool trade in the 11th Century, and developing through cloth manufacturing in the 18th Century. Despite very poor roads, the use of the rivers and streams in developing links to other centres, via, for example the Thames and Severn Canal, helped the Five Valleys to prosper.The valleys are as follows: The Chalford valley (also known as the "Golden Valley") The Nailsworth Valley - runs from Cherington, through Avening and along to Nailsworth The Ruscombe Valley The Slad Valley (of Cider with Rosie fame) The Painswick ValleyThe Five Valleys Walk is a popular circular walk of some 21 miles (34 kilometres) around Stroud. It has been held annually since 1987, in aid of the Stroud-based Meningitis Trust, usually on the last Sunday in September. A more exacting version of this walk has also been published, as the "Five Valleys Circuit"; this includes an ascent over the high ground of Selsley Common rather than the charity walk's low-level route from Stonehouse to Nailsworth, up the old railway line by the Nailsworth Stream. The Five Valleys Shopping Centre in Stroud is named after the Five Valleys.

Stroud is a market town and civil parish in Gloucestershire, England. It is the main town in Stroud District. The town's population was 13,500 in 2021.Below the western escarpment of the Cotswold Hills, at the meeting point of the Five Valleys, the town is noted for its steep streets. The Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty surrounds the town, and the Cotswold Way path passes by it to the west. It lies 10 miles (16 km) south of the city of Gloucester, 14 miles (23 km) south-southwest of Cheltenham, 13 miles (21 km) west-northwest of Cirencester and 26 miles (42 km) north-east of the city of Bristol. London is 91 miles (146 km) east-southeast of Stroud and the Welsh border at Whitebrook, Monmouthshire, is 19 miles (31 km) to the west. Not part of the town itself, the civil parishes of Rodborough and Cainscross form part of Stroud's urban area. Stroud acts as a centre for surrounding villages and market towns including Amberley, Bisley, Bussage, Chalford, Dursley, Eastcombe, Eastington, King's Stanley, Leonard Stanley, Minchinhampton, Nailsworth, Oakridge, Painswick, Randwick, Selsley, Sheepscombe, Slad, Stonehouse, Brimscombe & Thrupp, Whiteshill and Woodchester.In March 2021 The Sunday Times named Stroud the best place to live in the UK, citing the town's abundance of green spaces, independent spirit, and school quality.

Rodborough is a large village and civil parish in the district of Stroud, Gloucestershire, in South West England. It is directly south of the town of Stroud, north of the town of Nailsworth and north-west of the town of Minchinhampton. The parish includes the settlements of Bagpath (not to be confused with Bagpath in the Ozleworth valley), Butterrow, Kingscourt, Lightpill and Rooksmoor, and is adjacent to the Stroud suburb of Dudbridge. The population taken at the 2011 census was 5,334.

The Subscription Rooms is a building in George Street at the centre of the town of Stroud, Gloucestershire, England, erected in 1833 under the architect Charles Baker of Painswick. Funding for its erection was obtained through public subscription, hence its name, in the case of the Subscription Rooms it was a group of wealthy merchants.The Rooms provide entertainment including music, dance, theatre, visual arts, spoken word, exhibitions and workshops. The Beatles performed there on 31 March 1962.The two-storey, detached building is Grade II listed, giving it legal protection against unauthorised alteration or demolition. It is made from Cotswold stone, with a three-story extension to the rear, in brick. The frontage has a portico with Tuscan columns and balustraded balcony, facing onto a forecourt.The building was owned by Stroud District Council but in 2019 passed into the ownership of the Stroud Subscription Rooms Trust (Charity No. 1180350). The forecourt is "owned" by the Subscription Rooms.

Stroud railway station is a railway station that serves the town of Stroud in Gloucestershire, England. Stroud railway station (on the Gloucester–Swindon Golden Valley Line) was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Stroud railway station (unofficially known as Stroud Wallbridge) served the town of Stroud, in Gloucestershire, England. The station was on a short 1.25 mi-long branch from Dudbridge on the Stonehouse and Nailsworth Railway, part of the Midland Railway. It was not connected to the earlier and still used Stroud railway station on the Great Western Railway. Dudbridge had opened as "Dudbridge for Stroud" with the Stonehouse and Nailsworth Railway in 1867. The railway was quickly taken over by the Midland, whose main line between Bristol and Gloucester it joined at Stonehouse. In 1885, the Midland Railway built a short branch line from Dudbridge to a new station at Stroud. The new line opened for goods traffic in 1885 and for passengers on 1 July 1886.The station at Stroud was perched on a high embankment above the Thames and Severn Canal. The building was wooden and was described at the opening to passenger traffic as "temporary", though it lasted throughout the station's life and beyond. Goods traffic was always more important than passenger traffic at the station, and there was a large goods yard to the east of the passenger platforms.The station was always officially known simply as "Stroud", but to distinguish it from the nearby GWR station, various publications referred to it as either "Stroud Wallbridge" or "Stroud Cheapside"; the latter name is used in the April 1910 edition of Bradshaw's Railway Guide. That 1910 timetable shows the journey between Dudbridge and Stroud taking an average of five minutes, with fewer than 10 trains a day, a few of them directly running to or from Stonehouse. The station closed temporarily on 1 January 1917, reopening four weeks later on 29 January.The Stonehouse and Nailsworth Railway, along with the rest of the Midland Railway, became part of the London Midland and Scottish Railway at the 1923 Grouping. Passenger services were suspended on the line as an economy measure to save fuel in June 1947, and were officially withdrawn from 8 June 1949. The station remained open for goods traffic until 1966, though much of the freight had transferred to the former Great Western station. The station buildings have now been demolished and are covered by the town's ring road.

The Cotswold Canals Trust is a British registered charity that aims to protect and restore the Stroudwater Navigation and the Thames and Severn Canal. Formed in 1972, the organisation has a goal to restore navigability on the two waterways between Saul Junction to the River Thames. Since then, it has overseen restoration of the waterways, with many bridges, locks, and cuttings being rebuilt and reinstated.

The towns forming the district are Dursley, Minchinhampton, Nailsworth, Painswick, Stonehouse, Berkeley, Stroud (the administrative centre) and Wotton-under-Edge. The district is geographically located between the Tewkesbury district to the northwest and northeast, Gloucester district to the north, the Cotswold district to the north-northeast. east and southeast, The Forest of Dean district to the north-northwest, west, and southwest and the South Gloucestershire unitary authority to the southeast, south, and south-southwest. The largest settlement by far is Stroud, followed by the village of Cam and Stonehouse.

Stroud General Hospital is a health facility in Trinity Road in Stroud, Gloucestershire, England. It is managed by Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust.

Bowbridge Crossing Halt was opened on 1 May 1905 on what is now the Golden Valley Line between Kemble and Stroud. This line was opened in 1845 as the Cheltenham and Great Western Union Railway from Swindon to Gloucester and this was one of many small stations and halts built on this line for the local passenger service. This halt opened with the introduction of the GWR steam railmotor services between Stonehouse and Chalford. The halt was between Brimscombe and Stroud, on the minor road "Butterow Hill" between Bowbridge and Rodborough Common. The halt originally consisted of a pair of ground level platforms and a wooden crossing, but the platforms were subsequently replaced by standard height platforms. GWR pagoda style shelters were provided but these were later replaced by rectangular metal shelters. Access to the halt was from the adjacent level crossing, and Electric treadles and bells were provided warning passengers and other pedestrians of trains approaching.Closure of the halt came in November 1964 following the withdrawal of local stopping passenger services on the line. No trace of the halt remains today, but the wooden crossing still exists, approached with steps made from old railway sleepers.
