York Outer (UK Parliament constituency)

York had around 45 parish churches in 1300. Twenty survive, in whole or in part, a number surpassed in England only by Norwich, and 12 are used for worship. This article consists of a list of medieval churches which still exist in whole or in part, and a list of medieval churches which are known to have existed in the past but have been completely demolished. In 1086, the Domesday Book listed eight churches and a minster (not the current building). The number had declined to thirty-nine by 1428 due to taxation; nineteen medieval churches are in use today.

York was a rural sanitary district in Yorkshire, England, until 1894. It was based on the York poor law union (minus the City of York itself, which was an urban sanitary district), and included parishes in the West Riding, the North Riding and the East Riding, forming a ring around the city. It was abolished in 1894 under the Local Government Act 1894, and split to form rural districts. It was succeeded by the Bishopthorpe Rural District (West Riding), the Flaxton Rural District (North Riding) and the Escrick Rural District (East Riding).

The siege of York in 1644 was a prolonged contest for York during the First English Civil War, between the Scottish Covenanter army and the Parliamentarian armies of the Northern Association and Eastern Association, and the Royalist Army under the Marquess of Newcastle. It lasted from 22 April until 1 July when the city was relieved by Prince Rupert of the Rhine. Rupert and Newcastle were defeated the next day at the decisive Battle of Marston Moor, and the siege resumed until the city was surrendered on easy terms on 16 July.

The Snickelways of York, often misspelt Snickleways, are a collection of narrow streets and alleys in the city of York, England. The word Snickelway was coined by local author Mark W. Jones in 1983 in his book A Walk Around the Snickelways of York, and is a portmanteau of the words snicket, meaning a passageway between walls or fences, ginnel, a narrow passageway between or through buildings, and alleyway, a narrow street or lane. Although the word is a neologism, it quickly became part of the local vocabulary, and has even been used in official council documents, for example when giving notice of temporary footpath closures.

Ousegate is a street in the city centre of York, in England. It is divided into High Ousegate and Low Ousegate. The street forms part of the city's central shopping area. High Ousegate is pedestrianised, but Low Ousegate is a key transport route, busy with bus services.

The Grand Opera House is a theatre in York, England. It is located on Clifford Street and Cumberland Street in the city centre. The theatre is operated as part of the Ambassador Theatre Group. It plays host to touring productions of plays, musicals, opera and ballet, one-off performances by comedians, and other theatrical and musical events. The theatre has been designated a Grade II listed building by English Heritage.

The Blue Boar is a pub on Castlegate in the city centre of York, in England. The Blue Boar was a Mediaeval inn on the street. Among its guests were Roger Cottam, envoy to Henry VII of England, and many Royalist soldiers preparing for the Siege of York. It was demolished in about 1730 and replaced by the current building, along with the neighbouring 1 and 3 Castlegate. A tradition states that the body of Dick Turpin was kept in the cellar of the pub overnight, after his execution, and that the landlord of the pub allowed patrons to see the body, for a small fee. An additional tradition claims that Turpin's ghost haunts the pub. In 1770, the Robin Hood pub opened on the street, probably as a direct replacement for the Blue Boar, although it is not certain whether it occupied the same building. It became an important coaching inn, with coaches running daily to Hull and Leeds, and from 1816 also to Selby, along with less regular routes to Richmond, Barnard Castle, Howden and Bubwith. In Walter Scott's novel, The Heart of Midlothian, the Seven Stars pub is thought to be based on the Robin Hood. The front of the pub was rebuilt in 1851, including a carriage arch leading to former stables at the rear, and the pub was extended into part of 3 Castlegate. In about 1894, the pub was again renamed, as the Little John. It has since been internally rebuilt, and an extension added. In 1971, it was Grade II listed, along with the attached cast iron carriage gates. In the early 21st century, the pub was owned by Enterprise Inns and described itself as being "gay-friendly". It closed in 2011, but reopened the following year, returning to the Blue Boar name.

York Central is a parliamentary constituency which is represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament by Rachael Maskell of the Labour Party and the Co-operative Party, making it one of only two constituencies (including Middlesbrough) in North Yorkshire not currently represented by the Conservatives.

The Water Lanes were three medieval streets in the UK city of York. They led from Castlegate road down to the waterfront of the River Ouse. The Lanes were similar in appearance to the Shambles with the jettied buildings hanging over the street. In the 19th century, they were known as the First Lane, Middle Lane and Far Water Lane, although in medieval times they had been known as Kergate, Thrush Lane and Hertergate. They were demolished in 1852.
