This airport is owned and operated by South Middleton Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

Mary Ludwig Hays (October 13, 1754 – January 22, 1832) was a woman who fought in the American War of Independence at the Battle of Monmouth. The woman behind the Molly Pitcher story is most often identified as Hays, but it is likely that the legend is an amalgam of more than one woman seen on the battlefield that day.

The Hessian Powder Magazine, also known as the Hessian Guardhouse Museum, is an historic guardhouse and gunpowder magazine which is located on the grounds of the Carlisle Barracks in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

The Battle of Carlisle was an American Civil War skirmish fought in Pennsylvania on the same day as the Battle of Gettysburg, First Day. Stuart's Confederate cavalry briefly engaged Union militia under Maj. Gen. William F. "Baldy" Smith at Carlisle and set fire to the Carlisle Barracks. Stuart's cavalry withdrew and arrived at the Battle of Gettysburg, Second Day, to the annoyance and concern of Gen. Robert E. Lee.

The district includes 1,011 contributing buildings, 1 contributing site, and 1 contributing object in the central business district and surrounding residential areas of Carlisle. Most of the contributing buildings date to the mid- to late-19th century, with a few dated to the 18th century. Residential areas include notable examples of the Late Victorian and Federal styles. Notable non-residential buildings include the Cumberland County Courthouse (1845-1846), St. John's Episcopal Church (c. 1890), Cumberland County Prison (c. 1865), First Lutheran Church (c. 1900), Tavern (c. 1810), First Presbyterian Church (c. 1760), Theatre (c. 1930), Fire House (c. 1890), Grace United Methodist Church (c. 1829), and St. Patrick's Church (c. 1892).The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Carlisle is the smaller principal city of the Harrisburg–Carlisle metropolitan statistical area, which includes Cumberland and Dauphin and Perry counties in South Central Pennsylvania. The U.S. Army War College, located at Carlisle Barracks, prepares high-level military personnel and civilians for strategic leadership responsibilities. Carlisle Barracks ranks among the oldest U.S. Army installations and the most senior military educational institution in the United States Army. Carlisle Barracks is home of the United States Army Heritage and Education Center, an archives and museum complex open to the public. Carlisle also hosts Penn State Dickinson School of Law and Dickinson College.

Dickinson College is a private liberal arts college in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1773 as Carlisle Grammar School, Dickinson was chartered on September 9, 1783, making it the first college to be founded after the formation of the United States. Dickinson was founded by Benjamin Rush, a Founding Father and signer of the Declaration of Independence. The college is named in honor of John Dickinson, a Founding Father who voted to ratify the Constitution and later served as governor of Pennsylvania, and his wife Mary Norris Dickinson. They donated much of their extensive personal libraries to the new college.Dickinson School of Law, founded in 1834 as the college's law department, is located adjacent to the college campus. Dickinson School of Law received an independent charter in 1890 and ended its affiliations with the college in 1917. In 2000, it merged with Penn State University and serves as Penn State's law school.

Old West was the first building to be erected on the campus of Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. It was designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe in 1803, completed in 1822, and is a fine example of Federal period architecture. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1962 for its architecture and its association with Latrobe.

WHYL (960 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Carlisle, Pennsylvania and serving the Harrisburg metropolitan area. The station is owned by Harold Z. Swidler, with the license held by WHYL, Inc. It broadcasts an oldies radio format. It also carries Baltimore Orioles baseball games. The radio studios and offices are on North Hanover Street in Carlisle. By day, WHYL is powered at 5,000 watts non-directional. But to protect other stations on 960 AM from interference at night, it drops its power to only 22 watts. The transmitter is on East Baltimore Street in Carlisle, near Interstate 81. WHYL programming is simulcast around the clock on 160 watt FM translator W275CJ at 102.9 MHz. The translator tower is on Blue Mountain northeast of Carlisle. It uses the FM translator's dial position in its slogan "Good Time Oldies 102.9 WHYL."

The LeTort Spring Run is a 9.4-mile-long (15.1 km) tributary of Conodoguinet Creek in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania in the United States. Located near Carlisle, its length between Pennsylvania Route 34 and Conodoguinet Creek is a designated Pennsylvania Scenic River. It is a well-known fly fishing stream where anglers fish for brown trout. Located along its banks are LeTort Park, owned by the Borough of Carlisle, and the LeTort Spring Run Nature Trail. It is named for the French-Canadian fur trader James Le Tort, who built a cabin in the area about 1720.
