Carlisle is a borough in and the county seat of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, United States. Carlisle is located within the Cumberland Valley, a highly productive agricultural region. As of the 2020 census, the borough population was 20,118; including suburbs in the neighboring townships, 37,695 live in the Carlisle urban cluster. Carlisle is the smaller principal city of the Harrisburg–Carlisle metropolitan statistical area, which includes Cumberland and Dauphin and Perry counties in South Central Pennsylvania. The U.S. Army War College, located at Carlisle Barracks, prepares high-level military personnel and civilians for strategic leadership responsibilities. Carlisle Barracks ranks among the oldest U.S. Army installations and the most senior military educational institution in the United States Army. Carlisle Barracks is home of the United States Army Heritage and Education Center, an archives and museum complex open to the public. Carlisle also hosts Penn State Dickinson School of Law and Dickinson College.

Carlisle Fort, also known as Fort Carlisle, the Fort at Carlisle, Fort Lowther or Fort Louther, was a stockade built in the town of Carlisle, Pennsylvania during the French and Indian War, for local defense. The fort also served as a supply depot and a military headquarters during the Forbes Expedition in 1758. It was one of the first forts authorized for construction by Governor Robert Hunter Morris in 1755, although construction took almost two years to complete. It was never attacked, and was abandoned after 1758.

Old West was the first building to be erected on the campus of Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. It was designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe in 1803, completed in 1822, and is a fine example of Federal period architecture. It was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1962 for its architecture and its association with Latrobe.

Penn State Dickinson Law, formerly Dickinson School of Law, is a public law school in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. It is one of two separately accredited law schools of Pennsylvania State University.

Mary Ludwig Hays (October 13, 1754 – January 22, 1832) was a woman who fought in the American War of Independence at the Battle of Monmouth. The woman behind the Molly Pitcher story is most often identified as Hays, but it is likely that the legend is an amalgam of more than one woman seen on the battlefield that day.

Carlisle Historic District is a national historic district located at Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. The district includes 1,011 contributing buildings, 1 contributing site, and 1 contributing object in the central business district and surrounding residential areas of Carlisle. Most of the contributing buildings date to the mid- to late-19th century, with a few dated to the 18th century. Residential areas include notable examples of the Late Victorian and Federal styles. Notable non-residential buildings include the Cumberland County Courthouse (1845-1846), St. John's Episcopal Church (c. 1890), Cumberland County Prison (c. 1865), First Lutheran Church (c. 1900), Tavern (c. 1810), First Presbyterian Church (c. 1760), Theatre (c. 1930), Fire House (c. 1890), Grace United Methodist Church (c. 1829), and St. Patrick's Church (c. 1892).The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

The Battle of Carlisle was an American Civil War skirmish fought in Pennsylvania on the same day as the Battle of Gettysburg, First Day. Stuart's Confederate cavalry briefly engaged Union militia under Maj. Gen. William F. "Baldy" Smith at Carlisle and set fire to the Carlisle Barracks. Stuart's cavalry withdrew and arrived at the Battle of Gettysburg, Second Day, to the annoyance and concern of Gen. Robert E. Lee.

The LeTort Spring Run is a 9.4-mile-long (15.1 km) tributary of Conodoguinet Creek in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania in the United States. Located near Carlisle, its length between Pennsylvania Route 34 and Conodoguinet Creek is a designated Pennsylvania Scenic River. It is a well-known fly fishing stream where anglers fish for brown trout. Located along its banks are LeTort Park, owned by the Borough of Carlisle, and the LeTort Spring Run Nature Trail. It is named for the French-Canadian fur trader James Le Tort, who built a cabin in the area about 1720.

The Carlisle Area School District is a midsized, suburban, public school district that serves the boroughs of Carlisle and Mount Holly Springs and Dickinson Township and North Middleton Township in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Carlisle Area School District encompasses approximately 75 square miles (190 km2). According to 2000 federal census data, it serves a resident population of 34,794. in 2009, the residents' per capita income was $22,214, while the districts' median family income was $52,276.Carlisle Area School District operates ten schools, including Carlisle High School, Lamberton Middle School, Wilson Middle School, Bellaire Elementary School, Crestview Elementary School, Hamilton Elementary School, LeTort Elementary School, Mooreland Elementary School, Mount Holly Springs Elementary School and North Dickinson Elementary School. The district is served by the Capital Area Intermediate Unit 15 which offers a variety of services, including a completely developed K-12 curriculum that is mapped and aligned with the Pennsylvania Academic Standards (available online), shared services, a group purchasing program and a wide variety of special education and special needs services.

Carlisle High School is a public high school located in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, United States. It serves grades 9–12 for the Carlisle Area School District.

Carlisle Fairgrounds is located in downtown Carlisle, Pennsylvania. It is the home of Carlisle Events and the location for the largest collector car and truck events in the country. Prior to Carlisle Events' emergence, anyone interested in restoring or showing 1950s- or 1960s-era cars had few options. That all changed when Chip Miller and Bill Miller, Jr. became friends through a mutual interest in cars of the 1950s. Together they began going to car shows and swap meets, where like-minded individuals would hunt for parts and accessories to restore their vehicles. A need for these events became obvious to these two men in 1973. Until that time, the only cars deemed worthy to collect were pre-WWII automobiles. Carlisle Events was one of the first companies in the United States organized specifically to conduct and promote events for the collector car and truck hobby. On September 26, 1974, on the rented Carlisle Fairgrounds, "Post War '74" took place. It was the very first car event promoted by the company. In a year still remembered for gas lines and inflation, nearly 600 vendors set up in more than 800 spaces, and 13,000 spectators paid the $1 admission to sample their wares. Within a few years, the Carlisle Fairgrounds had become a mecca for collector car enthusiasts all over the world. The runaway success of what became known as Fall Carlisle Collector Car Swap Meet & Car Corral led to a similar Spring event in 1977. In short order, they became complete sellouts for vendor and car sale (or "car corral") spaces. In 1981, after renting the fairgrounds for each event, the Millers purchased the 82-acre (330,000 m2) property. Over the years, Carlisle Events has transformed the fairgrounds to suit the needs of car show participants and visitors. Continuous improvements include paved roads, a manicured landscape and more than 10 permanent buildings. At the same time, Carlisle Events has established consumer-friendly services such as on-site bank financing, notary and title service and a wide variety of dining choices.

The Hessian Powder Magazine, also known as the Hessian Guardhouse Museum, is an historic guardhouse and gunpowder magazine which is located on the grounds of the Carlisle Barracks in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
