South Lakes Safari Zoo (formerly South Lakes Wild Animal Park) is a 51-acre (21 ha) zoo established in 1994 by David Gill, and located in Cumbria, England. After an initial rapid growth, the zoo became one of Cumbria's most successful tourist attractions. However, under Gill's ownership the zoo had a number of controversies, emerging both from his personal life and his management of the zoo. Significant concerns over animal welfare and the death of an employee eventually led to Gill losing his license to operate the zoo in 2017, which has under a new management team seen a "marked improvement" in animal welfare.

The Furness Hoard is a hoard of Viking silver coins and other artefacts dating to the 9th and 10th Century that was discovered in Furness, Cumbria, England in May 2011 by an unnamed metal detectorist. The exact location of the find, as well as the names of the finder and the landowner, have not been made public.

Lindal-in-Furness is a village on the Furness peninsula of Cumbria, England. Historically in Lancashire, it lies eight miles to the north-east of Barrow-in-Furness, on the A590 trunk road. The civil parish is Lindal and Marton which had a population of 755 at the 2011 Census.The land around Lindal, a small grange belonging to Furness Abbey in the Middle Ages, had long been known for its iron ore. In the 1840s and 1850s, larger deposits were discovered in the area and Lindal became one of many mining villages supplying the iron ore for what was then one of the world's largest steelworks, in Barrow.Lindal was originally built around a tarn, which was later filled in with spoil from the mines to create a village green. The iron mining companies built houses, chapels, reading rooms, a public hall and a school in Lindal during the period from the mid-19th century to early 20th century. The iron ore production declined in face of increased international competition and dwindling resources. The last mine in Lindal closed in 1960. Since then, Lindal has developed as a commuter village for the nearby towns of Barrow-in-Furness, Dalton-in-Furness and Ulverston. Lindal and the adjacent village of Marton share a common Parish Council, Residents' Association, church and village hall. Lindal and Marton Primary School (LAMPS) celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2004.

There are approximately 1000 pupils on roll.The school was originally based on the former Ashburner House, which is still a part of the school. The name of Dowdales derives from the adjacent field known as Peter Dowdales' Field. On 28 August 2010, The Dowdales Year 7 Rugby Team defeated Temple Moor at Wembley, to Win the Carnegie Schools Trophy.

Askam and Ireleth is a civil parish close to Barrow-in-Furness in the county of Cumbria, in North West England. Historically part of Lancashire, it originally consisted of two separate coastal villages with different origins and histories which, in recent times, have merged to become one continuous settlement. In the 2001 census the parish had a population of 3,632, reducing at the 2011 census to 3,462.Ireleth has its origins as a mediaeval farming village clustered on the hillside overlooking the flat sands of the Duddon Estuary. Askam was established following the discovery of large quantities of iron ore near the village in the middle of the 18th century. The pair originally fell within the boundaries of the Hundred of Lonsdale 'north of the sands' in the historic county of Lancashire, but following local government reforms in 1974 became part of the county of Cumbria, along with the rest of Furness. The nearby River Duddon estuary and surrounding countryside have made the area well known for its wildlife, while the villages' exposed position on the eastern bank facing the Irish Sea have encouraged the establishment of wind energy generation, amid local controversy.

Dalton Castle is a grade I listed 14th-century peel tower situated in Dalton-in-Furness, Cumbria, England, and in the ownership of the National Trust. It was constructed by the monks of Furness Abbey for the protection of the nearby market town, and was the building from which the Abbot administered the area and dispensed justice.It was a prison from at least 1257, until 1774.The property hosts an exhibition on a local history as well as a display about local painter George Romney.
