Greene, Rhode Island

Anthony (previously known as Greenville and The Quaker Village) is a village along Route 117 within the town of Coventry, Rhode Island near the villages of Washington and Quidnick on the southwestern banks of the Pawtuxet River (Flat River). The village comprises "Anthony, Arnold, Boston, Mapledale, Meeting, Taft, Washington and Laurel Avenue."Previously, Anthony was known as "Greenville" and "The Quaker Village." In the eighteenth century, the Greene Family were early owners of the land and gave their name to the village where they operated a gristmill, forge, and sawmill. Many of the village residents, including the Greene family, were Quakers, members of the Society of Friends and part of the Greenwich Monthly Meeting, attending meetings at the Quaker Meeting House on Meeting Street, which was used for services from 1825 to 1915. The building is now a club house. Anthony was established and renamed in 1805 by William and Richard Anthony who built a textile mill in the village as part of the Coventry Manufacturing Company. By 1811 another cotton mill was built and later the Coventry Manufacturing Company operated in the area as well. The General Nathanael Greene Homestead is located near the village. The historic heart of the village, a 250-acre (100 ha) centered on Washington Street roughly between Sandy Bottom Road and Fairview Avenue and extending as far south as the Nathanael Greene Homestead, was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010 as the Anthony Village Historic District.

Fairbanks (also known as Fairbanks Corner) is a village in the town of Coventry, Rhode Island on Route 14, Plainfield Pike, right after the village of Rice City and near the Connecticut border. In the 1783 Colonel John McGregor, a Revolutionary War veteran, opened a tavern on the Plainfield Pike in the area, and in 1831 the tavern became associated with the Temperance Movement until it burned in the late 1800s. In 1826 George Fairbank from Sudbury, Massachusetts purchased a grist, card and fulling mill on the Moosup River, which was owned by the Blanchard family. Fairbank then constructed a woolen mill on the spot, which eventually utilized wool from local sheep farmers and used local seamstresses. The village was eventually named after Fairbank. Fairbank's House still remains in the village as do the foundations of the McGregor Tavern and the Fairbank Mill along the banks of the Moosup River.

The Rice City Historic District is a historic district in Coventry, Rhode Island. It encompasses the 19th-century village of Rice City, extending along Plainfield Pike (Rhode Island Route 14) for several miles between Sisson Road and Gibson Hill Road in the northwestern part of Coventry. The main village center is at the junction of the Pike and Vaughn Hollow Road, and there is a former industrial and commercial center at Fairbank's Corner, the junction with Flat River Road (Rhode Island Route 117). The architecture of the district is predominantly rural and residential, with Greek Revival and Federal style housing predominating. Rice City village is dominated by Rice Tavern (built 1804), which used to serve travelers on their way to Connecticut, as well as the Rice City Church (1846), the Democrat Schoolhouse, and the Obadiah Potter House (1846), all a short way up Vaughn Hill Road. At the western edge of the district, the modern Pike alignment diverges from the historical one at Gibson Hill Road, where the foundational remnants of agricultural settlements may be found.The area was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980; an erroneously omitted property was formally added to the district in 2000.

Wickaboxet State Forest is a 678 acre state management area on Plain Meeting House Road in West Greenwich, Rhode Island. It was founded in 1932.

The Moosup Valley Historic District is a rural, agricultural historic district in western Foster, Rhode Island. The focal center of the area is a small village where Moosup Valley Road crosses the Moosup River, and where the Moosup Valley Christian Church is located. The largest concentration of buildings in the district lie along a roughly one-mile stretch of Moosup Valley Road west of Rhode Island Route 14, with properties extending along some of the winding roads (paved and unpaved) that extend from that road. The district encompasses most of the headwaters of the Moosup River. The major public buildings are the church, a vernacular Greek Revival structure built in 1864–65, and the Grange hall, built in 1926. There is also a one-room schoolhouse which was built in 1811, and later used as a library and community center.The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

The Mount Vernon Tavern, also known as the Bank House Tavern, is an historic house in Foster, Rhode Island. It is located at 199 Plainfield Pike (Rhode Island Route 14), about 3/10 of a mile east of its junction with Howard Hill Road. The main block of the house, a 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame structure with gable roof, was built c. 1760, and was originally attached to an even older structure which was demolished in the late 19th century. This main block, five bays wide with a central chimney, is attached to a 1+1⁄2-story gable-roofed ell to the west. The main entrance portico features unusually elaborate Federal styling for a rural location, and was probably added in 1814. The house has long been a landmark on the road, serving as a stagecoach stop on what was the main road between Providence and points in Connecticut.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

The William Waterman House is a historic house in Coventry, Rhode Island. It is located on the west side of Rhode Island Route 102, a short way north of its junction with Bowen Hill Road. The 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame house was built, probably before 1793, by William Waterman, a descendant of one of Coventry's earliest European settlers. It is five bays wide, with a large central chimney. Its entry is the most elaborate part of the main facade, flanked by paired pilasters and sheltered by a barrel-vaulted portico with triangular pediment.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

The Isaac Bowen House is an historic house in Coventry, Rhode Island. The 2+1⁄2-story center-chimney wood-frame house, built c. 1750, stands on Maple Valley Road, near its junction with Rhode Island Route 102. The property, more than 3 acres (1.2 ha) extending to the road junction, is adjacent to the Audubon Society's George B. Parker Woodland Sanctuary, and is also owned by the society. The house was built by Isaac Bowen, a member of the locally prominent Bowen family, and is the only Bowen house to survive from that time. The house now serves as home to the Parker Sanctuary's caretaker.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

West Greenwich Baptist Church and Cemetery (also known as the Plain Meeting House) is a historic church meeting house and cemetery at Plain Meeting House and Liberty Hill Roads in West Greenwich Center, Rhode Island. It is the oldest building of this type in the western edge of Rhode Island. The Federal era "Plain Meeting" House was built around 1822 by the Independent and Union Society as a meeting house for the use of all local Christian congregations. The meeting house was named "Plain" after its location on the "plain" of West Greenwich Center. The building was used primarily by two Baptist congregations, the West Greenwich Baptist Church (founded in 1750) which believed in a Calvinist theology, and a branch of the Six Principle Baptist Church, which espoused an Arminian theology. The Six Principle branch had been planted by the Maple Root Six Principle Baptist Church located a few miles to the north. The two congregations merged in 1868 and continued to be known as the West Greenwich Baptist Church, maintaining sole custody of the building. Regular Sunday services were held well into the twentieth century and a Sunday School to study the Bible was held in the building as well. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

The Captain George Dorrance House is an historic house in Foster, Rhode Island. It is located on the west side of the road, a short way south of its junctions with Plain Woods Road, not far from the Connecticut border. It is a 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame structure, five bays wide, with a gable roof and a large central chimney. The main block was built c. 1720, and a leanto was added c. 1750. It is one of the best-preserved early 18th-century houses in the state.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 16, 1972.

The Wilson–Winslow House is a historic house in Coventry, Rhode Island. The main block of this 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame house was built c. 1812, either by Joseph Wilson or his son Israel. The house is a high-quality example of vernacular rural Federal architecture, which was altered in the 1930s as a country retreat for the Winslows, a Providence family.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

Sterling is a town in Windham County, Connecticut, United States. The town is part of the Northeastern Connecticut Planning Region. The population was 3,578 at the 2020 census. The rural town is home to two villages: Oneco (named for Oneco, Sachem of the Mohegans) and Sterling village. Each contains a post office, a church, and a fire station. The town hall and public library are located in Oneco, and the town's one public school is in Sterling village.
