Nithsdale (Srath Nid in Scottish Gaelic), also known as Strathnith, Stranith or Stranit, is the strath or dale of the River Nith in southern Scotland. Nithsdale was one of the medieval provinces of Scotland. The provinces gradually lost their administrative importance to the shires created from the twelfth century, with Nithsdale forming part of Dumfriesshire. A Nithsdale district covering a similar area to the medieval province was created in 1975, based in the area's main town of Dumfries. The district was abolished in 1996, since when the area has been directly administered by Dumfries and Galloway Council.

The Hallhill Covenanter Martyrs Memorial at Irongray (NX 910797) near Kirkpatrick Irongray Church in the old county of Kirkcudbrightshire, now Dumfries and Galloway, is the site of the deaths and burials of Covenanters Edward Gordon and Alexander McCubbin.

Irongray was one of the principal stations on the Cairn Valley Light Railway branch, from Dumfries. It served a rural area in Dumfries and Galloway The line was closed to passengers during WW2. Cairn Valley Junction lay to the east.

Auldgirth is a village on the A76 road in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. Auldgirth village features 'The Auldgirth Inn' and the former Auldgirth Primary School, which closed in 2000. Originally inhabitants of Auldgirth located to the scheme, situated next to the A76, but in recent years this has expanded to the outlying areas due to rejuvenation programmes. The name Auldgirth is from Early Scots ald(e) girth, meaning 'old enclosure'. At one time it had a staffed railway station, situated one mile south of the village, just before the hamlet of Dalswinton. Carse Loch and the Friar's Carse country house hotel are located nearby.

Lochrutton Loch is a large, lowland freshwater loch that lies to the west of Dumfries, Scotland. The loch trends from north to south and is 0.75 mi (1.21 km) long and 0.5 mi (0.80 km) at its widest point. It has an average depth of 13 ft (4.0 m) and is 58 ft (18 m) at its deepest. The loch was surveyed on 1 May 1905 by James Murray and L. W. Collett as part of Sir John Murray's Bathymetrical Survey of Fresh-Water Lochs of Scotland 1897-1909. In the centre of the loch are the remains of a crannog known as Dutton's cairn. It was excavated between 1901 and 1902 and found to have a circular cairn of earth, with a diameter of approximately 80 ft (24 m). The crannog is thought to date from the Early Iron Age and was occupied until the Middle Ages. Finds from the excavation included a jet cross dating from the 13th century.One of the areas adjacent to the loch is historically attested to have been known as 'Foot Ball Knowes' (knowe being the Scots for 'hillock'), possibly the only 'football' place name in Scotland, as early as 1815.The loch is populated with bream, perch, pike and roach. No permit is required to fish on the loch.

Carse Loch is situated (NX 926 849) in a low-lying area, surrounded by woodland, close to the A76 at Friar's Carse, in Dumfries and Galloway, Parish of Dunscore. It was once used as a monastic fish pond and the friars are said to have hidden their treasures on the crannog in times of danger. The loch is located about 7 miles from Dumfries and 2 miles from Auldgirth.

The Hermitage was a folly first built by Captain Robert Riddell of Friars Carse (known as Glenriddell at this time and later returned to its ancient name) as part of his enthusiasm for antiquities. It is famous for its connection with the bard Robert Burns who through his friendship with Riddell was permitted to use it to compose poetry in this secluded and tranquil sylvan spot. Burns also used his diamond point pen to engrave lines on the window pane at the Hermitage following the premature death of Riddell. The original Hermitage fell into disrepair and was rebuilt in 1874. It was further restored to its former glory more recently (2009).

Friars' Carse is a mansion house and estate situated (NX 926 850) 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) southeast of Auldgirth on the main road (A76) to Dumfries, Parish of Dunscore, Scotland. The property is located on the west bank of the River Nith and is known for its strong associations with Robert Burns who lived for a while at the nearby Ellisland farm. The mansion house is unlisted, however the stables and hermitage are Category B listed buildings.

Easthill stone circle (grid reference NX91937388), also known as the Seven Grey Stanes, is a small oval stone circle 3¾ miles south-west of Dumfries. Eight stones of a probable nine remain. Despite being considerably smaller, the shape and orientation of the circle link it to the nearby Twelve Apostles and the other large ovals of Dumfriesshire. It is a scheduled monument.

Hills Tower is a sixteenth-century square tower house, with an adjoining eighteenth-century wing, near Dumfries in Scotland. Originally built around 1527 for Edward Maxwell, who had purchased the estate from James Douglas of Drumlanrig, it was improved in the later sixteenth century by his grandson, also Edward Maxwell. In 1721, another Edward Maxwell had a two-storey Georgian wing added to the tower's east side, using stone taken from older buildings nearby, and incorporating armorial panels celebrating members of the Maxwell family. The tower is unusual in that it has retained its original barmkin walls and their gatehouse. It eventually passed by marriage to the McCullochs of Ardwall, who still retained ownership of it as of 1994. It is still inhabited, and in 1971 the tower, along with the walls and gatehouse, was designated a Category A listed building.

Terregles () is a village and civil parish near Dumfries, in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It lies in the former county of Kirkcudbrightshire. The name Terregles, recorded as Travereglis in 1359, is from Cumbric *trev-ïr-eglẹ:s. *Trev refers to a settlement and *eglẹ:s is a borrowing of Latin ecclesia, 'church building'. (Modern Welsh Tref yr Eglwys/ Tref Eglwys). James argues that the name dates to no earlier than the 10th century.The parish contains the ruins of Lincluden Collegiate Church and the site of Terregles House, once the seat of William Maxwell, last Earl of Nithsdale.To travel to Terregles from Dumfries the main artery out of the town is Terregles Street. Terregles Street is home to Queen of the South F.C.'s football ground, Palmerston Park. Terregles Street become Terregles Road at the Summerhill area on the edge of Dumfries. As the name suggests Terregles Road is the road to the village of Terregles, around a further 2 miles away. The parish includes the village of Terregles and surrounding rural area, but at the eastern end of the parish also includes Lincluden and adjoining areas which form part of the urban area of Dumfries. Part of the parish was included in the burgh of Maxwelltown, which was created in 1810 and abolished in 1929 when it was absorbed into the burgh of Dumfries. The part of the parish in the burgh was therefore transferred in 1929 from Kirkcudbrightshire to Dumfriesshire. The burgh of Dumfries was further enlarged in 1938 to take in the Lincluden area. The parish of Terregles therefore straddled the two counties from 1929 until further local government reform in 1975 abolished the administrative counties, and both parts of the parish became part of the Nithsdale district in the Dumfries and Galloway region. The whole parish has therefore been included in the Dumfries lieutenancy area since 1975.

Ellisland Farm lies about 6.5 mi/10.4 km northwest of Dumfries near the village of Auldgirth, located in the Parish of Dunscore, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. The complex is a museum in the farm Robert Burns built, lived in and farmed from 1788 until 1791. One of the earliest references to the site is in 1465. Cardinal Antonius confirming a Charter by the Monastery of Melrose of the adjoining property of Ellisland to John Kirkpatrick.
