Askern

Askern railway station was a station on the Askern branch line of the former Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway between Doncaster and Knottingley. It served the town of Askern in South Yorkshire, England.

Norton & Askern—consisting of the town of Askern, Braithwaite, Burghwallis, Campsall, Fenwick, Fishlake, Fosterhouses, Kirk Bramwith, Moss, Norton, Owston, Sutton, Sykehouse, Thorpe in Balne and part of Skellow—is one of 21 electoral wards in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. It forms part of the Doncaster North parliamentary constituency. It elects three councillors to Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council; as of April 2023, one of these is Conservative and two are Labour. In 2011 it had a population of 15,198. The ward was formed in 2015.

Askern Miners Football Club is a football club based in Askern, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. They are currently members of the Doncaster Saturday League Division One.

Norton (South Yorkshire) railway station was a railway station to serve Norton, South Yorkshire, England. It was built by the Wakefield, Pontefract and Goole Railway company on their line between Doncaster and Knottingley. The line and its stations were absorbed into the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway in 1847 when that company changed its name from the Manchester and Leeds Railway. The station buildings were similar to those at Womersley and were described as "Swiss Cottage" style. They are a stone built construction with a clipped gable end. At the grouping it passed to the LMS and British Railways on nationalisation. The station closed to passengers on 27 September 1948. But the railway line is still open and now carries freight trains (mainly bulk coal) to and from the power stations at Drax, Ferrybridge & Eggborough, along with Grand Central's passenger services between Bradford Interchange and London Kings Cross since 23 May 2010. As part of a report to Doncaster Borough Council in September 2008 the station site was to be protected for future use in a strategy for the railways in the borough, reopening being a distant possibility.

It lies at approximately 53° 36' 20" North, 1° 10' West, at an elevation of around 26 feet above sea level, west of Askern and south of Campsall. In 1931 the civil parish had a population of 156.

Campsall is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Norton, in the Doncaster district, in the county of South Yorkshire, England. It lies 7 miles (11 km) to the north-west of Doncaster, at an elevation of around 50 feet above sea level. The village contains Campsall Country Park. The village falls within the Norton & Askern ward of Doncaster Council and the House of Commons constituency of Doncaster North. The Parish is situated on the “Magnesian Limestone Belt”, a landscape feature formed by a narrow north–south trending escarpment. The Magnesian Limestone Belt is typified by well drained and fertile soils, which were ideal for agriculture and the establishment of settlements like Campsall. Before the industrial revolution, the area to the east was occupied by the inaccessible and waterlogged marshes of the Humberhead Levels, whilst to the west was the Barnsdale Forest, an area associated with the legend of Robin Hood and various outlaws and bandits who preyed upon travellers on the Great North Road. In 1931 the parish had a population of 260.

Owston is a small village and civil parish in the City of Doncaster in rural South Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, the village is situated amongst mixed farmland and woodland 6 miles (9.7 km) north northwest of Doncaster, just west of the A19. It had a population of 170 in 2001, which fell to 145 according to the 2011 Census.The name 'Owston' is of Old Scandinavian and Old English origin. It means 'East farmstead', being composed of the Old Scandinavian word austr ('east') and the Old English word tun ('farmstead'). In the Domesday Book, the village was recorded as Austhun. John de St Paul, Archbishop of Dublin, was born in Owston in about 1295. He was sometimes referred to as John de Owston. Close to the village is a site of special scientific interest called Owston Hay Meadows which is the second best example of neutral grassland hay meadow in South Yorkshire. The site consists of three small fields which together cover 13½ acres (5½ hectares) and were notified in 1979.The parish church of All Saints is Grade I listed, dating back to 1180.Nearby Owston Hall was declared a Grade II listed building in 1967, its grounds are used by the Robin Hood Golf Club of Doncaster.Dario's Ristorante is an Italian restaurant located on the edge of the village adjacent to the A19, in the premises previously occupied by The Owston, formerly Owston Park Lodge.

At the 2011 Census, the population was less than 100, so the details are included in the civil parish of Womersley. Situated close to the border with South Yorkshire, and north of Doncaster, it is 7 miles (11 km) south east of Pontefract, and lies close to the River Went, which rises at Featherstone.The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book, where it is described as consisting of seven households and two ploughlands. The name of the village derives from either Old German, Waldin or the Old English son of Walda. The second part, Stubbs is the Old English term for tree stumps.The village was historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire until 1974.The Askern Branch Line runs through this village, which has two level crossings. This rail line now carries freight and passenger trains from London Kings Cross to Bradford Interchange. There is also the occasional diverted passenger train from the East Coast Main Line.

Burghwallis is a small village and civil parish in rural South Yorkshire, England. The population of the civil parish as of the 2011 census was 300. The village is situated amongst mixed farmland and woodland on a slight rise roughly six miles north north west of Doncaster, or one mile off the A1. The village church is dedicated to St Helen. The village pub is the Burghwallis.
