Marlowe, West Virginia

Marlowe Elementary School was built in 1922 as an eight-room school to serve grades 1 through 8 in Marlowe, West Virginia. The new school allowed a number of one-room schools in the area to be closed. The Marlowe School is a two-story brick building on a concrete base. As originally built there were four rooms on each of the two main levels, with a cafeteria and mechanical rooms in the basement. Each classroom was provided with a coatroom. Windows were concentrated on the front and rear of the building with sparsely fenestrated ends. A central stairway serves all levels. The classrooms retain their original wood wainscoting and much of their original character. One story additions have been added to the rear from the 1970s on. The building presently serves grades K through 3 as a primary school.The school was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006 as the Marlowe Consolidated School.

Watkins Ferry Toll House was an historic toll house located at Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia. It was built in 1837, and was a small rectangular stone building, measuring approximately 17 feet wide by 23 feet deep. It had a gable roof and featured Greek Revival-style architectural details. While being used as a private dwelling, it burned on February 8, 1985. The remains of the foundation were finally removed in early 2004 to make room for a housing development.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Harmony Cemetery is a historic cemetery located near Marlowe, Berkeley County, West Virginia. It is an interdenominational burial ground established about 1830. It includes a number of notable grave markers and is the site of the old Harmony Meeting House.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

White Bush, alternately spelled Whitebush, is one of Berkeley County, West Virginia's oldest brick mansions. It was built circa 1781–1785 by Archibald Shearer, who had purchased the entire bend of the Potomac River in this area, about 1,200 acres (4.9 km2). The area at that time was part of Frederick County, Virginia. The property was formerly owned by Lord Fairfax, Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron but was confiscated as British property during the American Revolutionary War. A grist and saw mill had been established on the riverfront not far from the mansion by 1785.The mansion is a rare combination of Federal architecture in the main mansion, and a later Victorian style addition. White Bush was accepted into the National Register of Historic Places on December 10, 1980. It is alternately listed as the Archibald Shearer House. It is also listed in the Berkeley County Historical Society and the Berkeley County Historical Landmarks Commission Survey.

Maidstone-on-the-Potomac is a historic house and farm near Falling Waters, West Virginia. Located on the Potomac River immediately opposite Williamsport, Maryland, the property consists of a 218-acre (88 ha) tract with a main house dating from c. 1741. The house was built by Evan Watkins, who operated Watkins Ferry on the Potomac, which was used by George Washington and General Edward Braddock. In 1795 the property was sold to Peter Light. The Light family retained the property until 1854, substantially expanding the house. The ferry and house, by now known as Light's Ferry passed to Robert Lemen, who converted the ferry into a cable ferry. In 1861 the ferry was used by Union forces under Captain Abner Doubleday to cross into Virginia for raids. In 1863 Doubleday again crossed the river by fording while pursuing Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia as it advanced on Gettysburg. A month later, following Lee's defeat, 70,000 confederate soldiers crossed at Lemen's Ferry.In the late 19th century the first bridge crossing was built at this location. Today, US 11 crosses here, bisecting the property. The Watkins Family also became associated with the Boone Family during the time of their ownership of the Ferry. A great-great grandson, John Watkins (His father John T Watkins was born at Watkins Ferry), of the original Evan Watkins married Elizabeth Karn, a 1st and 2nd cousin of Daniel Boone's. Elizabeth was the daughter of Christopher Karn and Leah Boone. John and Elizabeth's son Christopher Columbus Watkins married Rachel Bristow who was the granddaughter of Leah's sister, Hannah Boone.

Conococheague Creek, a tributary of the Potomac River, is a free-flowing stream that originates in Pennsylvania and empties into the Potomac River near Williamsport, Maryland. It is 80 miles (129 km) in length, with 57 miles (92 km) in Pennsylvania and 23 miles (37 km) in Maryland. The watershed of Conococheague Creek has an area of approximately 566 square miles (1,470 km2), out of which only 65 square miles (170 km2) (12% of the area) are in Maryland. The word "Conococheague" is translated from the Delaware Indian or Unami-Lenapi term òk'chaxk'hanna, which means "many-turns-river." The Conococheague, or Connogochegue, as it was known at the time, was the northernmost extent of the range along the Potomac within which Congress in the Residence Bill of 1790 authorized the establishment of the Federal District, known as the District of Columbia. By presidential proclamation, George Washington placed the District at the lower end of the range, near the "Eastern Branch", later Anacostia River, which marked the southernmost extent of the Residence Bill's range. The water divide between Conococheague Creek and Conodoguinet Creek is sometimes used as the boundary between the Hagerstown Valley and the Cumberland Valley.

The Daniel Donnelly House is a historic home located at Williamsport, Washington County, Maryland, United States. It is a Flemish bond brick, two-story dwelling on a prominent hill built about 1833. The house shows influence of the Federal and Greek Revival styles. Also on the property are a small garden house, shed, and summerhouse, all small late-20th century structures. The house is associated with the American Civil War Battle of Falling Waters, which took place July 13 and 14, 1863. The Civil War Sites Advisory Commission found the property to be the best preserved battlefield along the route of Robert E. Lee's retreat from Gettysburg.The Daniel Donnelly House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

The Doubleday Hill Monument is an American Civil War monument located in Williamsport, Maryland, in what is now River View Cemetery. Erected in 1897, the monument commemorates the crossing of the Potomac River and occupation of the hill by Major General Abner Doubleday. The monument, also known Doubleday Hill, overlooks the Potomac River into West Virginia. The monument also credits Doubleday with creating the game of baseball in 1835, an unlikely claim which Doubleday himself never made. A popular legend circulating at the time of the monument's erection claimed that Doubleday invented baseball in 1839, although Doubleday was attending West Point that year.Doubleday Hill was a deviation from the more popular form of late 19th and early 20th century monuments: the statue of a standing, uniformed soldier. Between the years of 1863 through 1919, monuments often depicted a soldier “standing holding the barrel of a rifle that rests upright on the ground in front of him." This more common form was particularly prevalent from 1880 to 1920.Monuments placed at locations other than battlefield parks during the years 1863 to 1919 normally honored soldiers and sailors from the same town, county, or state where the monument was erected. The Doubleday Hill monument differed from this practice by celebrating occupation of the site by Doubleday, who was from Ballston Spa, New York.

Charles Downs II House is a historic home located near Marlowe, Berkeley County, West Virginia. It was built in 1835 and is a two-story, L-shaped, brick dwelling measuring 53 feet wide and 50 feet deep. It is five bays wide and three bays deep. Also on the property are a cement block garage and wood-frame shed dating to the 1920s.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

Williamsport Historic District is a national historic district at Williamsport, Washington County, Maryland, United States. The district consists of the historic core of this town. Almost 20 percent of the buildings in the district date from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. They are generally of log or brick construction until the second quarter of the 19th century. The district includes one of less than 10 banking houses still remaining in the US that were constructed during the first National Bank time frame, the Williamsport Banking Mansion, circa 1814. The town grew with the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and railroads, which resulted in prominent late 19th century Italianate and Queen Anne style buildings for residential and commercial purposes. Slightly less than 60 percent of the buildings date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
