Barthell is a former coal town in McCreary County, Kentucky, United States. It was established in 1902 and was the first of 18 mining camps to be built by the Stearns Coal and Lumber Company. It now serves as an open-air history museum, which is open from April through Thanksgiving.

Hill Top is located on Kentucky Route 92 near the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River, 3.5 miles (5.6 km) west of Whitley City.A post office was established in the community in 1925, and named for its scenic overlooks.

Blue Heron, also known as Mine 18, is a former coal mining community or coal town on the banks of the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River in McCreary County, Kentucky, United States, that has been recreated and is maintained as an interpretive history area in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. Blue Heron was operated as a company town of the Stearns Coal and Lumber Company. Its coal mines opened in 1937 and operated until December 1962, when the underground mines closed down for lack of profitability. The town was abandoned, and its buildings were either removed or decayed. The community was "re-created" in the 1980s as an outdoor museum. Some of the original structures have been replicated as open, metal shells of buildings, referred to as "ghost structures," on the approximate sites of the original buildings. Structures include a railroad depot, a full-scale model of the coal tipple, a school, and homes. Photographic exhibits and audio programs in the ghost structures tell about various aspects of life in the isolated mining community.

Oz is an unincorporated community and coal town located in McCreary County, Kentucky, United States.

The Stearns Golf Course, at 131 Clubhouse Dr. in Stearns, Kentucky, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.The nomination included 180 acres (73 ha) including the 49 acres (20 ha) golf course, a log clubhouse built in 1936, and a kidney-shaped in-ground pool. The clubhouse and pool were funded by the Works Progress Administration. It was located in a coal company town and the NRHP nomination described it as "'a very unusual place, as well as a significant one. It shows the lengths that some coal companies went to create a familiar experience in a very foreign place, importing a feature of urban leisure in a place of rural work.'"

Stearns is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in McCreary County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,365 at the 2020 census. It was founded by Justus Smith Stearns.

The Stearns Administrative and Commercial District, located on Old U.S. Route 27 in Stearns, Kentucky, is a 4.3 acres (1.7 ha) historic district which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. It included six contributing buildings and one non-contributing building.The main element is the Stearns Company General Offices Building, "a two-and one-half story frame building that utilizes dormers, porches, and roof lines characteristic of the American Four Square House." The McCreary County Museum now uses the building.

Revelo is an unincorporated community within McCreary County, Kentucky, United States. Originally a railroad siding for Southern Railway (US), the community was named for James Henry Oliver, an executive Vice President of Southern's Kentucky Division. Oliver was killed in a passenger train collision in 1918 in Danville, Virginia. "Revilo" is "Oliver" spelled backwards. The United States Postal Service changed it to the modern spelling in 1943.

It is the county seat of McCreary County. Whitley City is one of two unincorporated county seats in Kentucky (the other being Burlington in Boone County).

McCreary County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of the 2020 census, the population was 16,888. Its county seat is Whitley City. The county is named for James B. McCreary, a Confederate war soldier and two-time Governor of Kentucky (1875–1879, 1911–1915). During his second term as governor, McCreary County was created by the Legislature and was named in his honor.
