Blanchette Landing Access

The Montana was a Missouri River stern-wheel steamboat, one of three "mega-steamboats" (along with its sister boats the Wyoming and the Dakota) built in 1879 at the end of the steamboat era on the Missouri—when steamboats were soon to be supplanted by the nation's expanding railroad network. It was 250 feet (76 m) long (excluding the paddle wheel) and 48.8 feet (14.9 m) wide and weighed 959 tons (870 tonnes), excluding cargo. For a while the Montana's size allowed it to compete with the railroads, but the railroads continued to close the gap. On June 22, 1884, the Montana met its fate near Bridgeton, Missouri, when it collided with the Wabash Bridge and/or a submerged tree branch (a snag) by various accounts. To allow its cargo to be unloaded, it was beached on the Bridgeton side of the river, where in the following years its rotting hulk was repeatedly buried and uncovered as the banks of the river shifted. In the winter of 2001–2002, unusually low water levels in the Missouri exposed the remains of the Montana for the first time since the mid-1960s, and the State Historic Preservation Office of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources contracted SCI Engineering, Inc., of nearby St. Charles to monitor and photographically document the remains. The following autumn, at the invitation of Dr. Steve J. Dasovich, head of SCI's Archaeological Services Division, members of East Carolina University's Maritime History Program conducted an excavation and investigation of the wreckage. In 2012, low waters once again exposed the wreckage, and it was the subject of news reports. In these reports, Dr. Dasovich is quoted attributing the wreck to the boat's striking a submerged tree rather than its striking a bridge. The Montana was the subject of the History Channel's Deep Sea Detectives episode "Skeleton in the Sand: The Montana" in September 2003 and was featured in the Wild West Tech episode "Biggest Machines in the West" in December 2004.

Frenchtown Historic District is a national historic district located at St. Charles, St. Charles County, Missouri. The district encompasses 205 contributing buildings and 1 contributing structure in the Frenchtown section of St. Charles. It developed between about 1830 and 1940, and includes representative examples of Greek Revival style, Late Victorian style and Colonial style architecture. The district includes an industrial complex associated with the St. Charles Car Company, founded in 1873, and later known as the American Car and Foundry Company.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

The Wabash Bridge carries a single track railroad from St. Louis County to the city of St. Charles. It is positioned next to the Discovery Bridge. It is used by the freight trains of Norfolk Southern Railway.

The Discovery Bridge is a pair of truss bridges carrying Missouri Route 370 across the Missouri River between St. Louis County and St. Charles County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. The bridge was built between 1989 and 1992. Massman Construction built the river substructure and erected the steel girders. The St Charles pier is founded on rock. Piers 2-4 are supported by 6' diameter drilled shafts. Pier 5 on the St Louis County side is founded on Hp14-117 piling. The two trusses were fabricated by Stupp Brothers and erected approximately 500' downstream on falsework and floated into their final position after their transfer to barges. The land approaches substructure and concrete girders were built by Fred Weber. The entire deck was built by Kozney Wagner. A barrier-separated bicycle and pedestrian path along the northeast side of the bridge opened in 2020. Separate bicycle/pedestrian access ramps are available immediately on both ends of the bridge. This provides a connection to and from the Katy Trail, which passes under the bridge. Before the separated path opened, the shoulder on both sides was designated a bicycle and pedestrian path. The bicycle lane and shoulders were converted into an extra travel lane in each direction in November 2011 due to the rehabilitation of the westbound Blanchette (I-70) Bridge and the bridge was closed for bicycle and pedestrian use. The alternative river crossing was the Veterans Memorial (Page Ave) Bridge, adding about 15 miles' distance to trips involving a river crossing. The bicycle/pedestrian lanes reopened in May 2014.

Far West was a shallow draft sternwheel steamboat (or riverboat) plying the upper Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers in the Dakota and Montana Territories, in the years from 1870 to 1883. By being involved in historic events in the Indian Wars of the western frontier, the Far West became an iconic symbol of the shallow draft steamboat plying the upper Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers in the era before railroads dominated transport in these areas. The Far West was light, strong and speedy. She was initially owned by the Coulson Packet Line who contracted with the Army in the 1870s to provide steamboats to support Army expeditions on the Yellowstone River in the Montana Territory. The Far West was used in this capacity, along with its sister riverboat the Josephine. The Far West was often piloted by the famous river boat captain and pilot, Grant Marsh. The Far West was known as a fast boat because she had powerful engines, a hull with limited water resistance, and a low profile that reduced wind resistance. She set a number of speed records for both upstream and downstream travel on the Missouri and the Yellowstone. By virtue of her shallow draft and her ability to "grasshopper" over sand bars (using spars and steam capstans on the front of the boat to lift the boat and swing it forward a few feet at a time) she was famous for being able to get through shallow channels and low water conditions on the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers that turned back other steamboats. Far West gained a place in military and steamboat history during the Great Sioux War of 1876. The Far West was under contract to support a military column of infantry and cavalry units under General Alfred Terry, Colonel John Gibbon and Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer. The column was advancing up the Yellowstone, seeking a large Sioux and Cheyenne encampment which was moving along the river drainages to the south. The Far West brought supplies to the column, and it was used by Terry as a headquarters and also to ferry and move troops on the river. On June 21, the Far West was moored on the Yellowstone at the mouth of Rosebud Creek and was the site of the fateful meeting of officers after which Custer and the 7th Cavalry was dispatched south up the Rosebud seeking the Indian encampment. On June 25, 1876, the 7th Cavalry under Custer suffered a disastrous defeat at the Battle of the Little Bighorn . Five of the companies of the 7th were annihilated along with Custer, and the remaining companies suffering significant numbers of dead and wounded. Far West made her way from the Yellowstone up the Bighorn River to the mouth of the Little Bighorn where she was loaded with the wounded from the battle. Traveling night and day, she returned downriver to Bismarck, Dakota Territory, making the 710 mi (1,140 km) run in the record time of 54 hours and bringing the first news of the military defeat which came to be popularly known as the "Custer Massacre". After 1876 Far West was sold by the Coulson Packet Line. She continued to work on the Yellowstone and the Missouri Rivers for other owners until 1883 when she struck a snag and sank, near St. Charles, Missouri.

Today, the company is known as ACF Industries LLC and is based in St. Charles, Missouri. It is owned by investor Carl Icahn.

Midtown Neighborhood Historic District is a national historic district located at St. Charles, St. Charles County, Missouri. The district encompasses 527 contributing buildings, 7 contributing sites, and 5 contributing objects in a predominantly residential section of St. Charles. It developed between about 1838 and 1959, and includes representative examples of Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, Romanesque Revival, Folk Victorian, Colonial Revival, Classical Revival, Tudor Revival, and Bungalow / American Craftsman style architecture. Located in the district are the separately listed African Church and Oliver L. and Catherine Link House. Other notable buildings include the St. Charles County Courthouse, Benton School (1896), St. John's A.M.E. Church (1872), Immanuel Lutheran Church (1867), Jefferson Street Presbyterian Church, Fourth Street Market Grocery (1926-1927), West End Grocery and Meat Market (c. 1900), Dr. Ludwell Powell House (1838), Rogers-Ehrhard House (1856, 1866), Waye Monument Company and Residence (1889), Meyer House, Kaemmerlen House, and Elsner House.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.

Old City Hall, also known as the Market House, is a historic city hall located at St. Charles, St. Charles County, Missouri. It was built in 1832 as the Market House, and underwent alterations in 1886. It is a two-story, vernacular brick building on a rockfaced ashlar foundation. It features segmental arched openings, pilasters, and a mansard roof.: 2–3 It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

The St. Charles Odd Fellows Hall is historic Odd Fellows hall located at St. Charles, St. Charles County, Missouri. It is a 3 1/2-story, brick Second Empire-styled building that was built in 1878. A small two-story rear addition was constructed about 1900. It served historically as a clubhouse, as an auditorium, and as a financial institution.: 2 It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. It is included in the St. Charles Historic District, and is located across from the BPOE No. 690.
