Hilversum (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɦɪlvərsʏm] (listen)) is a city and municipality in the province of North Holland, Netherlands. Located in the heart of the Gooi, it is the largest urban centre in that area. It is surrounded by heathland, woods, meadows, lakes, and smaller towns. Hilversum is part of the Randstad, one of the largest conurbations in Europe, and the Amsterdam metropolitan area; it is about 22 km from the centre of Amsterdam and about 15 km from the city of Utrecht. The city is home to the headquarters, studios, and broadcast stations of several major radio, television, and newspaper companies, such as the NOS. This means that Hilversum is known for being the mediastad (media city) of the Netherlands.

NPO 1 (NPO een, formerly Nederland 1 Dutch pronunciation: [ˌneːdərlɑnt ˈeːn] until 2014) is the first national television station in the Netherlands. It launched on 2 October 1951. It provides public broadcasting and currently exists next to sister channels NPO 2 and NPO 3. Several broadcasting organisations of the Publieke Omroep deliver a wide variety of programs for the channel, usually for larger audiences. In 2018, it was the most viewed channel in the Netherlands, reaching a market share of 22.0%.

Media Park (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈmeːdijaː pɑr(ə)k]) is a large business park in the Dutch city of Hilversum. This site is home to a number of Dutch broadcasters and media companies, and is the headquarters of the national public broadcasting system NPO.

Pim Fortuyn, a Dutch politician, was assassinated by Volkert van der Graaf in Hilversum, North Holland on 6 May 2002, nine days before the general election of 2002, in which he was leading the Pim Fortuyn List (LPF).On a few occasions, Fortuyn had expressed his fear of being murdered: after being pied at the official release of his book De puinhopen van acht jaar Paars, as well as, most notably, on the talk show Jensen! on 22 March 2002. In court at his trial, Van der Graaf, an environmental and animal rights activist, said he murdered Fortuyn to stop him from exploiting Muslims as "scapegoats" and targeting "the weak members of society" in seeking political power. Van der Graaf was sentenced to eighteen years in prison. The sentence was upheld after he appealed. He was released on parole in 2014 after completing two-thirds of his sentence and has since lived in Apeldoorn, Gelderland.

The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision (Dutch: Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid, or short, Beeld en Geluid) is the cultural archive and a museum located in Hilversum. The Institute for Sound and Vision collects, looks after, and provides access to over 70% of the Dutch audio-visual heritage. In total, the collection of more than 750,000 hours of [television, radio, music and film that began in 1898 and continues to grow daily, makes Sound and Vision one of the largest audiovisual [archive]s in Europe. It was founded in 1997 as the Netherlands Audiovisual Archive (Dutch: Nederlands Audiovisueel Archief (NAA)), and adopted its current name in 2002. Sound and Vision is the business archive of the national broadcasting corporations, a cultural heritage institute (providing access to students and the general public) and also a museum for its visitors. The digital television production workflow and massive digitization efforts break grounds for new services. Sound and Vision is an experienced partner in European funded research projects. These include, or have included: P2P-Fusion, MultiMatch, PrestoSpace, VIDI-Video, LiWA Living Web Archives (Research Project), Communia, Video Active (European Research Project) and the streaming mobile app Radio Garden, which gives listeners access to radio stations worldwide, perhaps their best known research project.

Hilversum Media Park (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌɦɪlvərsʏˈmeːdijaː ˌpɑr(ə)k]), previously called Hilversum NOS (1974–1989) and Hilversum Noord (1989–2013), is a railway station in the city of Hilversum, Netherlands. Opened on 25 September 1974, Hilversum Media Park is located on kilometre 27 of the Amsterdam–Zutphen railway, partly called the Gooilijn because of the region it runs through. The station is situated north of the city centre, serving the Media Park, where most Dutch television and radio broadcasters are located. The station has two platforms, which are connected through a covered footbridge. Before 1989, the station was named after the public broadcaster Nederlandse Omroep Stichting, more commonly referred to as NOS.

The Hilversum Town Hall (Dutch: Raadhuis Hilversum) was designed by Willem Marinus Dudok to serve as seat of the municipal council of Hilversum in the Netherlands. Construction was completed in 1931. It is a much-admired building that is considered the finest example of Dudok’s work and internationally recognized as one of the most influential buildings of its time.

AVRO Studios is a building complex and national heritage site in Hilversum, where the radio and TV studios and the head office of the Dutch public broadcasting association AVRO (Algemene Vereniging Radio Omroep or "General Association of Radio Broadcasting") were located until 2000. The buildings have since been used by other companies for different purposes.

Radio 538 (Dutch: [ˈradijoː ˈvɛivdriɑxt]) is a Dutch commercial radio station that was founded in Hilversum, Netherlands in 1992. It is the second-most listened to radio station in the Netherlands. Radio 538 refers to the wavelength on which Radio Veronica used to broadcast in the 1970s. The station is owned by Talpa Network. Mostly targetting a young audience, the station plays a mix of current dance, R&B, pop, and rock hits. The music selection is mainly based on the Dutch Top 40 chart. Its breakfast and drive-time shows are talk-intensive. The station was originally only accessible through cable. In 1998, Radio 538 upgraded their frequency package, allowing for different frequencies by region. Radio 538 launched the hip-hop and contemporary R&B program Juize, which developed into the radio station Juize FM in 2004. In 2011, Radio 538 created a sister television station called TV 538.

The Gemeentelijk Gymnasium is a secondary school in Hilversum, The Netherlands. It offers a classical curriculum, including studies in Latin and Greek. It was established in 1913.

Hilversum is a railway station in Hilversum, Netherlands. It is located approximately 28 kilometres (17 mi) southeast of Amsterdam. It located on the Amsterdam Centraal station – Amersfoort station part of the Amsterdam–Zutphen railway, with a branch to Utrecht Centraal station. There are two other stations in Hilversum: Hilversum Media Park to the north, and Hilversum Sportpark to the south.

The Eurovision Song Contest 1958 was the third edition of the annual Eurovision Song Contest. It took place in Hilversum, Netherlands, following the country's victory at the 1957 contest with the song "Net als toen" by Corry Brokken. This formed the convention that the winning country of the previous year's event would host the following year. Organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster Nederlandse Televisie Stichting (NTS), the contest was held at the AVRO Studios on Wednesday 12 March 1958 and was hosted by Dutch television presenter Hannie Lips. Ten countries participated in the contest, equalling the number in the previous edition. Sweden, a country that would go on to be one of the most successful countries in the contest made its debut this year, while the United Kingdom decided not to participate. The winner was France with the song "Dors, mon amour", performed by André Claveau, written by Pierre Delanoë and composed by Hubert Giraud. This was France's first of five victories in the contest. At 46 years and 76 days of age, Claveau would remain the oldest winner until 1990.
