Austin is an unincorporated community located in south-central Kentucky. This community was founded around 1895 and is located in Barren County, Kentucky, near Barren River Lake. It used to have a general store in central Austin, but it was torn down as of late 2022.

Barren River Lake State Resort Park

Barren River Lake State Resort Park is a 1,053-acre (426 ha) park located in Barren County, Kentucky and extending into parts of Allen County and Monroe County. Barren River Lake, its major feature, is an artificial lake created with the building of a 146-foot-high (45 m) dam by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers begun in 1960. It covers approximately 10,000 acres (4,000 ha) and has 141 miles (227 km) of shoreline. The park was dedicated in 1965.

Brigadoon State Nature Preserve

Brigadoon State Nature Preserve is a state nature preserve located in Barren County, Kentucky adjacent to Barren River Lake. The Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves purchased 92 acres (37 ha) of mostly mature forest from the Nature Conservancy that was dedicated into the preserve system on March 14, 1985. An additional 88 acres (36 ha) were dedicated on June 12, 2001. Including another 4-acre (1.6 ha) tract, a total of 184 acres (74 ha) are protected. The forest is dominated by American beech, maple, and tulip poplar, with an array of spring wildflowers, including several species that are considered rare or uncommon in Kentucky. There is also habitat for numerous migratory and resident birds in the preserve. The preserve is open to the public and includes at 1 mile (1.6 km) trail.

Barren River Lake

Barren River Lake is a 10,100 acres (41 km2), reservoir in Kentucky created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1964 by impounding the Barren River. The lake occupies parts of Allen, Barren, and Monroe counties. The Barren River Lake Dam is an earthen dam, 146 feet (45 m) high and 3,970 feet (1,210 m) long at its crest. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for operation and maintenance of the project, and responsible for protection of the resource. A small segment of the property owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is leased to Barren River Lake State Resort Park and lies along a section of shoreline in Barren County.
