Hermantown is a city in Saint Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 10,221 at the 2020 census. A suburb of Duluth, it was at one point the county's only city to grow in population, as much of the area's residential and commercial expansion occurred there. Hermantown is near the tip of Lake Superior. The eastern part of Hermantown has an appearance typical of a lower-density bedroom community, with large, leafy lots and occasional subdivisions. The car-oriented "Miller Hill area", or Miller Trunk Corridor of Duluth, has sprawled well past the city boundary line into this part of Hermantown. The western part of Hermantown is more rural, reminiscent of the city's past agricultural focus. Hermantown's motto is "The City of Quality Living". Hermantown's mayor is Wayne Boucher, who won a 2008 election against Susie Stockinger. Boucher ran unopposed for a second term in 2012 and received 4,111 votes; there were 79 write-ins.

The Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI) is a United States (U.S.) based research institute founded by the Minnesota state legislature within the University of Minnesota Duluth. NRRI is a non-profit, applied research organization, established with a mission to improve the economy of Minnesota. The Institute aims to help launch small businesses and provides ongoing research and development assistance.

Four Corners is an unincorporated community in Saint Louis County, Minnesota, United States; located 10 miles northwest of the city of Duluth at the junction of U.S. Highway 53 and Saint Louis County Road 13 (Midway Road). Four Corners is more commonly known in the present day as the Pike Lake business district of Canosia Township. Four Corners is located near the survey point boundary line for Canosia Township, the city of Hermantown, Grand Lake Township, and Solway Township. The actual survey point boundary line where the three townships and the city of Hermantown meet is located nearby at the intersection of Seville Road and Solway Road. State Highway 194 (MN 194) and Martin Road (County Road 9) are also near Four Corners – Pike Lake business district.

The Federal Prison Camp, Duluth (FPC Duluth) is a minimum-security federal prison in the north central United States, located in Minnesota for male offenders. It is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a division of the United States Department of Justice. FPC Duluth is located on the former Duluth Air Force Base near the southwestern tip of Lake Superior, halfway between Minneapolis–St. Paul and the Canada–United States border, and seven miles (11 km) north of Duluth.

Canosia Township is an urban township in Saint Louis County, Minnesota, United States. Canosia is a name derived from the Algonquian language meaning "pike fish". The population was 2,158 at the 2010 census.Midway Road (County Road 13) and Martin Road (County Road 9) are two of the main routes in the township. Other routes include Lavaque Road (County Road 48), Lavaque Bypass Road, and Old Miller Trunk Highway. U.S. Highway 53 passes briefly through the southwest corner of Canosia Township. The Pike Lake business district is located within the township. The town hall and fire hall are located at the corner of Midway Rd. and Martin Rd. (4896 Midway Rd, Duluth MN 55811) Canosia Township is administered by a three-person town board that meets monthly. The town board oversees township road maintenance, the Canosia Volunteer Fire Department, the township cemetery, recreation area and recycling shed.

Miller Creek is a stream in St. Louis County, in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It is a tributary of the Saint Louis River. Miller Creek was named for Robert P. Miller, an officer during the Civil War.

Bayview Heights is a primarily residential neighborhood in Duluth, Minnesota, United States. Although it is grouped by the city with the West Duluth communities, it often functions more as a part of the city of Proctor than of Duluth, due primarily to its hilltop location (1200 feet or roughly 400 m above sea level) rather than the 600 feet or roughly 200 m above sea level typical of West Duluth neighborhoods. The neighborhood is centered on Duluth's Vinland Street, where the elementary school, affiliated with Proctor's school district, is located. Vinland Street begins in Proctor as 5th Street, changes its name at the Boundary Avenue intersection (which is the Duluth – Proctor city boundary line), and ends at the "Bayview" intersection. The "Bayview" intersection in Duluth's Bayview Heights neighborhood is the meeting point for Vinland Street, Getchell Road, Skyline Parkway, and Highland Street. Highland Street follows downhill to West Duluth; Getchell Road follows the opposite direction to Hermantown; and scenic Skyline Parkway continues its journey through the city of Duluth. Keene Creek flows through at the eastern edge of the neighborhood.

Proctor is a city in Saint Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 3,120 at the 2020 census. The city was established as Proctorknott in 1894, with the name coming from former Kentucky Governor J. Proctor Knott. Knott was famous for delivering the speech The Untold Delights of Duluth to the U.S. House of Representatives. The city's name was shortened to Proctor in 1904.Proctor's welcome sign on U.S. Highway 2 reads: "You Have a Place in Proctor".

Proctor High School is a 9–12 secondary school in Proctor, Minnesota, United States that was established in 1912. Situated in the Duluth–Superior area, Proctor High School and the connected A.I. Jedlicka Middle School serves about 1,000 students. The Proctor school district contains five schools and they generally have eighteen students for every full-time teacher according to a study done in 2011.
