Stockholm City Hall

The City of Stockholm (Swedish: Stockholms stad) was a city in Sweden and 1863–1970 a city municipality for Stockholm, subordinate to the Office of the Governor of Stockholm until 1967 and then part of Stockholm County.

Eldkvarn was a grand gristmill in central Stockholm that burned in 1878 — an event which was known as "the fire of the century". It was located where today the Stockholm City Hall stands. The mill was built in 1805 for Abraham Niclas Edelcrantz with a steam engine built by Samuel Owen. At the time of the blaze, the fire was known as the fire of the century, because of its ferocity and the fact that it could be seen from many points of the city, dominating the skyline. It was a moment that gripped the city in horror, as citizens watched the fire rage and fill the night sky.

The Blue Hall (Swedish: Blå hallen) is the main hall of the Stockholm City Hall best known as the banquet hall for the annual Nobel Banquet, and also used for state visits, student balls, jubilees and other large events.

Stadshusbron (Swedish: "The City Hall Bridge"), formerly known as Nya Kungsholmsbron ("The New Kungsholm Bridge") is a bridge in central Stockholm, Sweden located just north of the Stockholm City Hall. Stretching over Klara sjö ("Lake Klara"), it connects mainland Norrmalm on the eastern shore to the island Kungsholmen on the western shore. Strong population growth on Kungsholmen caused a first bridge to be built on the location in 1669–1672. It was a 500 metres long pontoon bridge forming an angle on the southern side of the strait, at the time presumably the longest bridge in Europe. It was rebuilt first in 1709 and a second time in 1766–1772. By that time, however, the strait had been made considerably narrower by land fillings. The original bridge was replaced by a steel swing bridge in 1868. In connection to the construction of the City Hall in 1917–1919, the present 19 metres wide double-leafed drawbridge was built. The drawbridge was finally closed in 1949.

Klara Sjö (Swedish for "Lake Klara") is a canal in central Stockholm, Sweden. Separating the island Kungsholmen from the northern city district Norrmalm, the canal connects Barnhusviken to Riddarfjärden. Together with Barnhusviken, Karlbergssjön, and Karlbergskanalen, it thus forms part of the nameless body of water which separates Kungsholmen from the mainland districts north and east of it, Norrmalm and Vasastaden. Four bridges stretches over the canal: Stadshusbron, Klarabergsviadukten, Kungsbron, and Blekholmsbron; the first of which limit the maximum height in the canal to 3.3 m.Several prominent buildings are located near the canal: Most notably the Stockholm City Hall south of it, but also the Seraphim Hospital (Serafimerlasarettet) on the western shore, in operation 1752-1990.The name of the canal is derived from the vicinity to the Klara district, in its turn named after a former monastery dedicated to Saint Clare. The canal is called a lake simply because it used to be a lake until continuous land fillings transformed it into a narrow strait during the 18th century. (See Stadshusbron for further details.) Several local streets and other structures are still named after the small island Blekholmen once located here and today part of the eastern shore.

Stockholm Waterfront, consists of three separate buildings for conferences, hotel and offices. The buildings are located at Klarabergsviadukten in central Stockholm, at the place where Klara postterminal previously stood, overlooking Riddarfjärden. The complex is built for three functions, called Radisson Blu Waterfront (for hotel), Stockholm Waterfront (for congresses) and Waterfront Building (for offices). Architect is the White arkitekter firm. Radisson Blu operates the hotel and congress parts and was opened on January 20, 2011.The first idea for a complex at the site was presented in early 21st century by architect Gert Wingårdh, a proposal for a new hotel and congress centre at the city block Bangårdsposetn 1 och 2. His proposition was however seen as to challenging at one of the most vulnerable places in Stockholm, on Riddarfjärden and neighboring the Stockholm City Hall and was never realized. The present project Stockholm Waterfront began in 2005, when the City of Stockholm asked if Jarl Asset Management wanted to present a suggestion how the area at the old mail terminal could be developed. The city wanted a facility for congresses and a hotel, but for the project to be more economic the owners of Jarl Asset Management also build an office complex. White arkitekter was hired as architect. According to "Remiss- och samrådsredogörelse, Innerstadsavdelningen" of March 9, 2007 (Dp 2006-11281-54), the opinion was mostly in favour of the proposal and in August the detailed plan was legalized. The demolition of the previous buildings on the site was started in mid-2008 together with Klara postterminal. The stainless façade was constructed from duplex stainless steel Z-profiles, 3 to 16 metres (9.8 to 52.5 ft) in length, approx. 26 kilometres (16 mi) in total, fabricated from duplex grade EN 1.4462 (ASTM 2205) supplied by Outokumpu. Fingerprint resistant austenitic grade EN 1.4301 (ASTM 304) was also supplied by Outokumpu for interior window and door frames.

Stockholm Central Station (Swedish: Stockholms centralstation) is a railway station in Stockholm, Sweden. It is situated in the district of Norrmalm at Vasagatan/Central Plan. The station opened on 18 July 1871 and it had over 200,000 visitors daily, of which about 170,000 were travellers (105,000 with commuter trains, 25,000 with Arlanda Express and 40,000 with other trains), until 10 July 2017 when the local commuter trains started to call at the Stockholm City Station which is located under the central station. In front of the central station stands a statue of Nils Ericson.

Klarabergsviadukten (Swedish: "The Viaduct of Hill of St Clare") is a reinforced concrete bridge and an overpass in central Stockholm, Sweden. Stretching over Klara Sjö, it connects Norrmalm to Kungsholmen. Where in English viaduct generally signify a bridge composed of several small spans, in Swedish it is also used for other bridges, generally railway or motorway bridges, of one span or more, spanning only land or, for example a street. The (not particularly small) spans of Klarabergsviadukten stretches over both a railway yard and Klara sjö ("Lake Klara"), and was originally intended to form part of a traffic route, Klarabergsleden, connecting central Stockholm to the western suburbs, plans cancelled in 1974. Though not obviously a viaduct even in the Swedish sense, it still retains its name. First brought up in a proposal in 1928, a traffic route bridging the central railway yard in Stockholm and Klara sjö was planned to continue through the Seraphim Hospital area over Norr Mälarstrand along the southern shore of Kungsholmen to reach Drottningsholmsvägen, the road leaving Stockholm for the western suburbs. Over the years, the expected development of the traffic system in Stockholm made the planned route wider and wider, from the planned 18 metres in 1932 to 31 metres when the viaduct and bridge were finally built in 1961.Klarabergsviadukten is composed of several sections. It stretches 106 metres with a maximum span of 32 metres over Vasagatan; 136 metres over the railway yard with spans varying from 12 to 17 metres; and the bridge over Klara sjö having a maximum span of 41 metres. Because the bridge never was used as part of a motorway, its dimensions are out of proportion, and it is therefore partly being used for parking.

The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (Swedish: Stiftelsen för strategisk forskning, SSF) is a Swedish independent research-funding foundation. Its objective is to "support research in natural science, engineering and medicine that strengthens Sweden’s competitiveness". It is located in the World Trade Center in Stockholm, Sweden.SSF was founded in 1994 by the Swedish government when the employee funds was discontinued under the Bildt Cabinet. When the Foundation was established in 1994 the government decided on a budget allocation of 6 billion. Almost 12 billion is distributed since then and in April 2014, the Foundation, thanks to good asset management and stock market growth, had a capital of about 11 billion. The funding of various projects by SSF in 2015 amounted to SEK 600,000,000.

Cityterminalen is the central bus station of Stockholm. It is situated in the Norrmalm city district, and is connected by a tunnel to the Stockholm Central Station. Most long range bus lines in Stockholm have a stop in Cityterminalen. Construction started on July 3, 1985, and the station opened for traffic on January 20, 1989. The station is adjacent to the Stockholm World Trade Center.

Vasagatan is a major street in central Stockholm named after King Gustav Vasa. In its southern end it is connected to the old town Gamla Stan by the bridge Vasabron, from where it stretches north to the public square Norra Bantorget. It passes in front of the Stockholm Central Station and is intercepted by Kungsgatan.
