Bismarck (; from 1872 to 1873: Edwinton) is the capital of the U.S. state of North Dakota and the county seat of Burleigh County. It is the state's 2nd most populous city, after Fargo. The city's population was 73,622 in the 2020 census, while its metropolitan population was 133,626. In 2020, Forbes magazine ranked Bismarck as the seventh fastest-growing small city in the United States.Bismarck was founded by European-Americans in 1872 on the east bank of the Missouri River. It has been North Dakota's capital city since 1889, when the state was created from the Dakota Territory and admitted to the Union.Bismarck is across the river from Mandan, named after a Native American tribe of the area. The two cities comprise the core of the Bismarck–Mandan Metropolitan Statistical Area. The North Dakota State Capitol is in central Bismarck. The state government employs more than 4,600 in the city. As a hub of retail and health care, Bismarck is the economic center of south-central North Dakota and north-central South Dakota.

The Bismarck Civic Auditorium on North 6th Street in Bismarck, North Dakota, was built in 1914. It has also been known as City Auditorium and, after 1989, the Belle Mehus Civic Auditorium. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.It was a major work of Bismarck architect Arthur Wesley Van Horn (1860-1931). Preliminary design work was done by architects Reed and Stem of St. Paul, Minnesota.

The Soo Hotel was later known as the Princess Hotel, The Patterson Hotel Annex, The Hotel Dakotan, Heritage Recovery Center, and Heritage Apartments. It is a historic building located on Fifth Street North in Bismarck, North Dakota, United States, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It was built by prominent businessman and political powerhouse Edward Patterson in 1906 as a second-class hotel to his other property, the high-class Northwestern Hotel. The four-floor, 76-room hotel was named after the Soo Line Railroad which had arrived in town in 1902 and whose depot was located several blocks away. It was briefly the tallest building in Bismarck.

The E. G. Patterson Building at 412–414 Main St. in Bismarck, North Dakota, United States, was built in 1905. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.The building was designed by Milton Earl Beebe and is an example of Early Commercial architecture. The theater is now the Dakota Stage Playhouse and was previously the Capitol Theatre and the Cinema Theatre. In the 1970s the theater showed adult films. The theater was next to the Patterson Hotel from 1911 to the 1970s, said to be the most prominent hotel in Bismarck.

The Bismarck Tribune Building on N. 4th St. in Bismarck, North Dakota was designed by architect George H. Shanley and was built in 1920. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1982.According to its NRHP nomination it is a "rare application" of Prairie School architecture in North Dakota.The editor, George Douglas Mann, recruited a Great Falls, Montana, designer to plan this flame resistant structure with substantial casing and floors, primary mud tile dividers, and Hebron pressed block outside. The famous Prairie Style configuration accentuates flat extents and joins enhancing brickwork with applied earthenware decoration with themes of adapted lights, blossoms, leaves, and lotus buds. Block header courses emphasize the pilasters that help rectangular spandrels between the first-and second-floor windows. A particular polychrome earthenware bas-help board over the fundamental passage recreates a work of art of priests rehearsing the printer's art on a hand press. The Bismarck Tribune Building has filled in as office space since the newspaper relocated its operations in 1981.

The Patterson Hotel was a prominent and luxurious hotel located in Bismarck, North Dakota, United States, that was home to the Nonpartisan League and well known for its continued construction that lasted over twenty years. The hotel was a major hotspot for politicians throughout the 1960s. First named the McKenzie Hotel, the structure was constructed by Alexander McKenzie and opened on New Year's Day, 1911. At the time it opened, the ten-story, 150-room hotel was the tallest structure in Bismarck, and would retain this distinction until the new North Dakota State Capitol was completed in 1934. Edward Patterson, a close friend of McKenzie, would later purchase the hotel. Patterson had constructed the adjacent Soo Hotel, also listed on the National Register, in 1906. The hotel was renamed the Patterson Hotel in 1927, shortly after the death of Alexander McKenzie.

The Bismarck station in Bismarck, North Dakota was built in 1900 by the Northern Pacific Railway. It is in Mission/Spanish Revival style and was designed by architects Reed & Stem. It "is notable for its Spanish mission-style architecture, a familiar mode in the Southwest and California but uncommon in the northern plains." After the Northern Pacific Railway and then Burlington Northern Railroad discontinued passenger service, Amtrak's North Coast Hiawatha used the station from 1971 until it was discontinued in 1979.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, as the Northern Pacific Railway Depot.The station underwent a renovation that was completed in 2018, and a brewery was opened in the building. The brewery closed in 2020, and the building is currently being renovated again into restaurant, office, and event space.

The U.S. Post Office and Courthouse in Bismarck, North Dakota, United States, was built during 1912–13 and expanded in 1937. It was designed by James Knox Taylor and includes Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals architecture and Second Renaissance Revival architecture. Also known as Federal Building, it served historically as a courthouse and as a post office. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.It is notable as one of the last works of James Knox Taylor, who was Supervising Architect of the U.S. Treasury from 1897 until 1912.It is a three-story, steel-framed building with reinforced concrete floors and a red tile roof that can be seen from far away to the south. It was approximately 100 feet (30 m) wide (on Broadway) by 64 feet (20 m) deep (on Third Street) when completed in 1913, then deepened to 115 feet (35 m) in 1937.

St. George's Episcopal Memorial Church, a historic Episcopal church in Bismarck, North Dakota's capital, is unique for its construction incorporating stained glass from English churches bombed in World War II into its own stained-glass windows. It is located in the Episcopal Diocese of North Dakota and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2021. The building, completed in 1949, replaced an early one dating to 1881 in the Dakota Territory, prior to statehood in 1889. The original building was built on railroad-donated land in the first decade of the city's growth. The church needed more space by the 1930s but was unable to erect a larger building until after World War II. The original building was moved and repurposed as a museum at Camp Hancock State Historic Site. The newer building is notable for being constructed of pumice concrete and its unique stained-glass windows. The windows were made in England by Barton, Kinder, and Alderson, and the majority of them contained pieces of glass that were salvaged from dozens of damaged churches in southeast England during World War II. The glass studio documented the lineage of each window, with some made with glass collected from churches built in the Middle Ages.

The Webb Brothers Block on E. Main Ave. in Bismarck, North Dakota, United States, has also been known as the Sears Block. The building was built in 1898–1899 with an addition added in 1906. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The Former North Dakota Executive Mansion, also or formerly known as Old Governor's Mansion or Asa Fisher House, at 320 Ave. B., E., in Bismarck, North Dakota, was built in 1893. It served "as the official residence of the governors of North Dakota for nearly 67 years. The last Governor to occupy it was John E. Davis whose term of office ran through 1960." From 1961 through 1975, the former house was used for offices of the State Health Department.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.The original governor's mansion was built in 1884 as a private home for Bismarck businessman Asa Fisher. Fisher homesteaded in Edwinton (Bismarck) in 1872 and made his fortune in banking, real estate and liquor sales. In 1893, the house was sold to the state for $5000. The house was used as the governor's residence from 1893 to 1960 and was the home of twenty North Dakota governors. In 1975, the State Legislature passed House Bill 1315 which transferred ownership to the State Historical Society of North Dakota. The house was renovated to look as it did in 1893 and opened to the public as a North Dakota State Historic Site in 1983.

The Van Horn Hotel on N. 3rd St. in Bismarck, North Dakota, United States, was designed by architect Arthur W. Van Horn. It was built in 1916. It has also been known as the Prince Hotel.
