The Chocolate Works

St Chad's Church, sometimes known as St Chad on the Knavesmire, is a parish church in the South Bank area of York, in England. In the early 20th century, the South Bank area fell within the parish of St Clement's Church, but it had a small mission church on South Bank Avenue. A church building on Campleshon Road was planned as a memorial to G. Argles, rector of St Clement's. The building was designed by Walter Brierley. Construction started in 1925, but was unfinished when Brierley died the following year. A vestry was added to the building in 1928, when the church was given its own parish. The church was finally completed by Francis Johnson in 1966, with only about half the original plan having been constructed. The building was Grade II listed in 2004. The building is constructed of concrete, with brick facades, and a concrete roof vault. The main part of the church consists of a single space, serving as both nave and chancel, with side aisles, a narthex at the west end, with stairs leading to an organ gallery, and a chapel at the east end. There is a tower at the north-west; this incorporates a porch. The tower has a flat roof and has a brick niche containing a statue of Saint Chad. Externally, the building is divided into bays by full-height buttresses, and the walls are topped with a parapet of moulded brick. There is a priest's doorway at the south-east corner, with its own small tower. The windows are lancets, arranged at the west end in multiple tiers.Inside, the nave and chancel are divided by a screen, with piers which support a piscina and aumbry. The pulpit is hexagonal and was constructed in 1940.

Bishopthorpe Road is a radial route in York, in England, connecting the city centre with the village of Bishopthorpe. It is locally known as Bishy Road.

South Bank is an area of York in the county of North Yorkshire, England. It is to the south of the River Ouse. It was home to the now-closed Terry's Chocolate Works. The Chocolate Works factory opened in 1926, where over the years it manufactured Terry's Chocolate Orange, Terry's All Gold and York Fruits. Terry's was acquired by Kraft Foods in 1993, who decided in 2004 to switch production of remaining products All Gold and Chocolate Orange to factories in Belgium, Sweden, Poland and Slovakia, and close the plant. The factory closed on 30 September 2005, with the loss of 317 jobs.Located near the factory is York Racecourse, which forms part of the larger Knavesmire. There is an Athletics Club, the Knavesmire Harriers, who train in this area. South Bank is also the location of Rowntree Park, which is situated near the River Ouse. The Millennium Bridge, which links South Bank to Fishergate and Fulford on the other side of the river, was completed in 2001 at a cost of £4.2 million.Knavesmire Primary School opened in 1914 and is the main primary school in the area. Millthorpe School was formerly a specialist language college and converted to academy status in April 2016. The main Catholic secondary school in the area (and in York as a whole) is the "outstanding" All Saints RC School which also houses the only Sixth Form in the area. It has two sites, the upper site (which is host to years 10-13) is located between Tadcaster Road, Albemarle Road, Scarcroft Hill and Scarcroft Road. The parish church is St Chad's Church, designed by Walter Brierley.St Chad's Greys is the local Scout Group. It was formed in 1926 and is one of the largest groups in York and one of only three groups in North Yorkshire which have a Scout Band.

Knavesmire Secondary School was a secondary modern school based in York, England from the 1960s (c. 1965) to the 1980s. During the 1960s, it was a girls only school. The building was located on Bishopthorpe Road next to York Racecourse, and was taken over by the College of Law in the early 1990s. The by then University of Law moved its north-east campus to Leeds in the 2010s and sold the site. The school is now occupied by OneSchool Global, an independent school connected to the Plymouth Brethren evalangelical church. The author Sheelagh Kelly attended the school during the 1960s.

York Racecourse is a horse racing venue in York, North Yorkshire, England. It is the third biggest racecourse in Britain in terms of total prize money offered, and second behind Ascot in prize money offered per meeting. It attracts around 350,000 racegoers per year and stages three of the UK's 36 annual Group 1 races – the Juddmonte International Stakes, the Nunthorpe Stakes and the Yorkshire Oaks.

Millthorpe School is a mixed secondary school located in York, North Yorkshire, England. It is situated in South Bank, York, and can be accessed via Scarcroft Road (the A59). It is close to two primary schools, Scarcroft Primary School and Knavesmire Primary School.

The Knavesmire is one of a number of large, marshy undeveloped areas within the city of York in North Yorkshire, England, which are collectively known as Strays. Knavesmire, together with Hob Moor, comprises Micklegate Stray. This place includes an area of execution known as York Tyburn. It has been suggested that the name 'Knavesmire' may share a derivation with Knaresborough—Cenward's mire.

St Oswald's Hall is a grade II* listed former church in Fulford, in south-eastern York, in England. The church lies west of the main part of Fulford, near the River Ouse. It is possible that this was the original site of the village, which is now centred on the main road.The church was built in the 12th century, a small building of stone from Tadcaster. The nave has been tentatively dated to about 1150, and the chancel to around 1180. The south door and windows on the north side of the chancel are original, while the east window dates from the 14th century, and the southern windows are 17th-century. The church originally had a steeple, but already in 1577 it was recorded as being "in decay", and it was later demolished. In 1795, a brick tower was added, with a pyramidal roof, and a new west window was added. A vestry was also added, along with a west gallery.The church was further altered in 1809, when new pews and a new pulpit were added, and the ceiling plaster is from this date. The roof tiles are acorn shaped, made by Wade and Cherry around 1870. In 1890, a lych gate was constructed at the entrance to the churchyard. Inside the church, the floor in the chancel is tiled, with the tiles thought to be 13th-century, having originally been laid at Jervaulx Abbey, but other fittings have been removed.A new St Oswald's Church was constructed in the village in 1866, and the old church was converted into a house in 1980.

Middlethorpe is a hamlet in the civil parish of Bishopthorpe, in the unitary authority area of City of York, in North Yorkshire, England. The village was made a Conservation Area in 1975. Middlethorpe Hall dates from 1699 and Middlethorpe Manor from about 1700.Middlethorpe was formerly a township in the parish of St. Mary-Bishopshill-Senior, in 1866 Middlethorpe became a separate civil parish, in 1894 the parish was abolished and split to form Middlethorpe Within from the part in the County Borough of York and Middlethorpe Without from the rural part. In 1891 the parish had a population of 128.

Rowntree Park is a 20-acre (8.1 ha) park in York, England open to the public, featuring children's playgrounds, tennis courts, bowling greens, basketball court, skateboarding area and general areas for picnicking. The park also features a large lake, a canal and a water cascade, and is home to many ducks, swans and Canada geese. The park's outdoor swimming pool was demolished in the face of strong public protest in the 1980s.It was created in memory of employees of Rowntree's who died in World War I, and was opened in July 1921 by local entrepreneur and philanthropist Joseph Rowntree. The gates at the riverbank entrance are eighteenth-century and were given by the company as a memorial to the people of York who died in World War II. Rowntree Park celebrated its 85th anniversary on 16 July 2006 with an open day. In 2006 the park won a Green Flag Award. This is awarded for reaching the English and Welsh national standard for parks and green spaces.
