Crosskeys railway station

Coleg Gwent - Crosskeys (generally known as Crosskeys College) is the largest campus of Coleg Gwent. It is located next to Risca Road in Crosskeys, near Newport in Wales. The college was previously a technical college and a coal mining college. However, since the demise of heavy industry in the area over the past decades, the college has now become the leading further education establishment in the area. Many of the secondary schools in the area are without a sixth-form and so they feed Crosskeys college with students. The majority of students in Crosskeys are studying AS & A2 levels, of which there are over 30 to choose from. There are also BTECs, National Diplomas, GNVQs and GCSEs that are available to study. Cwmcarn is a village situated in the Ebbw valley in south Wales, in the historic boundaries of Monmouthshire. It grew with 19th-century coal mining, but is now known for its extensive mature forestry and greenery, that attract thousands of visitors and mountain biking enthusiasts each year.

Cwmcarn railway station served the village of Cwmcarn, Monmouthshire from 1855 to 1962 on the Ebbw Valley Railway.

Mynydd Machen or Machen Mountain is a 362-metre-high (1,188 ft) hill lying between the town of Risca and the village of Machen in Caerphilly County Borough in south Wales. Its summit is crowned by a trig point and a mast.

Mynydd y Lan is a 381-metre-high flat-topped hill in Caerphilly county borough in South Wales. It falls largely within the community of Ynysddu but its northern and eastern margins are within Crosskeys community. Its largely wooded southern and eastern flanks rise steeply from the Sirhowy and Ebbw valleys respectively. A wireless transmission station is located towards the northern end of the summit plateau. The current name is a possible corruption of Mynydd y Llan (mountain of the church), referencing the parish church of St Tudor, situated on its plateau. the church site has been occupied since the 5th century, with an early British site, being replaced by the Norman 11th century church.

The English Baptist Church is a Grade II-listed Baptist church in the town of Abercarn, Caerphilly, Wales. It was built in the mid-nineteenth century to give the Baptists a church of their own. The building was extensively remodelled later in the century.

Abercarn United Football Club is a Welsh football team based in Abercarn, Caerphilly county borough, Wales. They currently play in the Ardal SE, the third tier of the Welsh football pyramid.

St Mary and St Mercurius Coptic Orthodox Church is the first Coptic Orthodox Church in Wales, at St Mary Street in Risca, Newport, Wales. It was consecrated in 1992 by Pope Shenouda III in the town of Risca, South Wales, under the official name of St Mary’s and St Abu Saifain’s Coptic Orthodox Church as a parish of the Coptic Orthodox Church. Nine Mile Point railway station was a halt on the Newport to Tredegar line of the Sirhowy Railway. It served the village of Wattsville. It marked the position of the end on junction between the Sirhowy and Monmouthshire tramroads, being nine miles from the end of the Monmouthshire section of the tramroad at Llanarth St, Newport. Marshalling yards to the north were for the Nine Mile Point Colliery. Nine Mile Point had two signal boxes, No 1 & 2 within short distance of each other. This was due to the very narrow valley allowing just an up and down line. Traffic between the marshalling yards and the colliery was considerable needing the use of two signal boxes. Little remains of this site other than a water tower foundations and evidence of a platform. At its peak there were 11 daily services between Nine Mile point and Newport or Tredegar.

Machen railway station was an interchange junction in Caerphilly County Borough, South Wales. It was large and substantial compared with many other stations in the vicinity.

The Abercarn colliery disaster was a catastrophic explosion within the Prince of Wales Colliery in the Welsh village of Abercarn (then in the county of Monmouthshire), on 11 September 1878, killing 268 men and boys (though an exact number of casualties remains unknown). The cause was assumed to have been the ignition of firedamp by a safety lamp. The disaster is the third worst for loss of life to occur within the South Wales Coalfield.
