Boat How or Eskdale Moor is a hill in the English Lake District, near Boot, in the Borough of Copeland, Cumbria. It lies south of Burnmoor Tarn, between the River Mite to the west and the Whillan Beck tributary of Eskdale to the east. It is the subject of a chapter of Wainwright's book The Outlying Fells of Lakeland. It reaches 1,105 feet (337 m) and Wainwright describes an anticlockwise circuit from Boot. He says: "Its proliferation of ancient remains makes it a happy hunting ground for walkers with an eye for relics of days long past", mentioning the presence of four stone circles. Richards in his Fellranger books names the hill as Eskdale Moor and refers to the summit outcrop as Boat How, but the Database of British and Irish Hills identifies it as Boat How, while classifying it as a Tump, Outlying Fell, Birkett, Synge and Fellranger.Richards describes ascent routes from Dalegarth railway station, Miterdale Forest or the village of Eskdale Green, and describes the fell as "Tract of fascinating moorland between Miterdale and Eskdale, with tarns and ancient relics".Historic England uses the name Burnmoor, for an area including Boat How but extending north of Burnmoor Tarn: in its description of "Maiden Castle round cairn, Burnmoor", to the north of the tarn, it describes it as lying "at the northern end of a large area of open moorland known as Burnmoor which contains an abundance of prehistoric remains". There are four scheduled ancient monuments on the fell, described as "Cairnfield including a funerary cairn, standing stone and three stone banks south of Eller How, Burnmoor", "Prehistoric enclosure containing three hut circles and eight clearance cairns and an adjacent hut circle and cairnfield north east of Boat How, Burnmoor", "Prehistoric enclosure containing ten clearance cairns south west of Boat How, Burnmoor" and "Cairnfield including a prehistoric enclosure, 5 stone circles, 10 funerary cairns, 6 stone banks, 2 stone walls, a lynchet and a trackway on Burnmoor" (known as Burnmoor stone circles).

Burnmoor stone circles

The Burnmoor Stone Circles are a group of five different approximately 4000-year-old stone circles in Cumbria. They are around 1 mile north of the village of Boot, on the slopes of Boat How. The site which covers roughly a square mile is looked after by the National Trust. The largest circle is known as Brat's Hill and there are two nearby pairs of circles known as White Moss and Low Longrigg.

Burnmoor Tarn

Burnmoor Tarn, on Eskdale Fell in Cumbria, England, is the largest entirely natural tarns in the Lake District. Its waters flow into Whillan Beck at the tarn's north-eastern corner, which immediately turns south and flows into Eskdale, joining the Esk at Beckfoot. Burnmoor Lodge, a former fishing lodge, stands by the southern shore and a mediaeval corpse road runs past the eastern shore where it fords the beck. Eskdale Moor or Boat How lies to the south of the tarn. The tarn is one of the sites in DEFRA's UK Upland Waters Monitoring Network. It occupies 23.9 hectares (59 acres) and lies at an altitude of 253 metres (830 ft) in a moraine hollow on the uplands between Wastwater and Eskdale. The lake has two distinct basins close to the south-eastern shore and a maximum depth of 13 metres (43 ft). There are four main inflow streams to the north and north-west. The outflow at the eastern end joins the Hardrigg Beck which drains the slopes of Scafell and, in times of especially high flow, is partly diverted into the lake across a braided delta.

Illgill Head

Illgill Head is a fell in the English Lake District. It is known more commonly as the northern portion of the Wastwater Screes. The fell is 609 metres (1,998 ft) high and stands along the south-east shore of Wastwater, the deepest lake in England.

Great How

Great How or Great Howe is a hill of 522 metres (1,713 ft) in the north west of the Lake District, England, lying south of Scafell Pike and east of Burnmoor Tarn. It lies in the Borough of Copeland in Cumbria.It is classed as a Fellranger, being described by Richards in the Wasdale volume of his book series. It is among the 21 such summits (originally 18 before the extension of the Lake District) which are not included in Wainwright's list of 214. It is also classed as a Dodd, Dewey, Birkett and Synge.

Wast Water

Wast Water or Wastwater () is a lake located in Wasdale, a valley in the western part of the Lake District National Park, England. The lake is almost three miles (five kilometres) long and more than one-third mile (500 m) wide. It is a glacial lake, formed in a glacially 'over-deepened' valley. It is the deepest lake in England at 258 feet (79 m). The surface of the lake is about 200 feet (60 m) above sea level, while its bottom is over 50 feet (15 m) below sea level. It is owned by the National Trust.
