Groton, Massachusetts

Groton is a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Groton in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 1,124 at the 2010 census.

The Gov. George S. Boutwell House is a historic house at 172 Main Street in Groton, Massachusetts, USA, that was home to Governor George S. Boutwell. It was built in 1851 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. It is the current headquarters of the Groton Historical Society.

The old Groton High School is a historic school building at 145 Main Street in Groton, Massachusetts. It has also variously been known as the Prescott School, Groton Junior High School, and Butler School. The building is two stories, with a flat roof. It is divided into four sections: a central portion that protrudes slightly from the main facade, which is topped by a pedimented gable, two wings that flank the central portion, and a rear section behind the central building. Because the building sits on a sloping lot, the rear section is actually three full stories; its ground floor section is made of concrete, while the rest of the building is predominantly made of brick, laid in a variation of an English cross bond pattern. The central portion was built in 1871 to a design by Henry M. Francis, originally with Second Empire styling, and named the Butler School in honor of a long-serving town clerk, Caleb Butler. The school served all grades until 1915.In the late 1920s the building was extensively altered, adding the three wings, and removing the third floor of the original building, which had been damaged by fire in 1925. Exterior changes also gave the building its present Colonial Revival appearance. Despite significant alterations in use to accommodate different grades over the years, the building's interior also remained remarkably intact. In 1975, the town joined with neighboring Dunstable, and its high school students were relocated to the Groton-Dunstable Regional High School. This building was renamed the Colonel William Prescott School, and house lower grades until it was closed in 2008.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

The Groton Inn is an inn at 128 Main Street in Groton, Massachusetts. Until 2011, it was an inn consisting of three historic structures, and was believed to be the oldest operating inn in the nation. The oldest structure was complete in 1678, making the inn the oldest in the United States. From 1797 until 1847 the inn served as a meeting place for St. Paul's Masonic Lodge, where Paul Revere was Grand Master. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The inn was severely damaged by fire in August 2011. Attempts were made to save the front of the building, which was barely harmed compared to the rest of the structure, but the owners chose to demolish the inn in November 2011.Local investors and residents proposed rebuilding the inn, and in 2017 construction began. Completed in April 2018, the inn is now a 60-room boutique hotel.

The First Parish Church of Groton is a historic church building at 1 Powderhouse Road in Groton, Massachusetts. It was built in 1754-55 and restyled in 1839 for a congregation whose history dates to the founding of the community in the 17th century. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021.

Lawrence Academy at Groton is a private, nonsectarian, coeducational college preparatory boarding school located in Groton, Massachusetts, in the United States. Founded in 1792 by a group of fifty residents of Groton and Pepperell, Massachusetts as Groton Academy, and chartered in 1793 by Governor John Hancock, Lawrence is the tenth oldest boarding school in the United States, and the third in Massachusetts, following Governor Dummer Academy (1763) and Phillips Academy at Andover (1778). The phrase on Lawrence Academy's seal is "Omnibus Lucet": in Latin, "Let light shine upon all."

Bancroft's castle was built by General William Bancroft in 1906 atop Gibbet Hill in Groton, Massachusetts. Since 2000, the "castle" and trails became part of Groton's protected open space and was opened to the public.

Shepley Hill is a summit in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. The elevation is 351 feet (107 m).The hill was named as early as the 1670s after the local Shepley family.

Gibbet Hill is a summit in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. The elevation is 469 feet (143 m).According to tradition, the name recalls an incident when an Indian was gibbeted upon the summit.

Groton School (founded as Groton School for Boys) is a private college-preparatory boarding school located in Groton, Massachusetts. Ranked as one of the top five boarding high schools in the United States in Niche (2021–2022), it is affiliated with the Episcopalian tradition. Groton enrolls about 380 boys and girls, from the eighth through twelfth grades. It has one of the largest endowments of any prep school in the country at $477,000,000 as of June 30, 2021. Tuition, room and board, and required fees in 2014–2015 amounted to $56,700 (with books extra); 38% of the students receive financial aid.The school is a member of the Independent School League. There have been many famous Groton alumni in business and government, including U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt. For the 2020–2021 admissions cycle, Groton School reported an acceptance rate of 9%.

Cady Pond is a lake in Middlesex County, in the U.S. state of Massachusetts.Cady Pond was named after Nicholas Cady, a pioneer citizen.Nicholas Cady [of Suffolk county England] and wife Judith Knapp Cady did resided near the pond in the last years of their lives. Died prior to 1712. There is no marker of their graves.
