Brierley Hill Urban District

Chapel Street Estate is a residential area of Brierley Hill, West Midlands, England. Although the Chapel Street Estate was created only in the 1960s, the actual site of the estate had been a dense residential area for at least 100 years previously. Hundreds of terraced houses had been built on the site of Chapel Street during the 19th century, housing the many industrial workers who were being employed at new factories like the Round Oak Steel Works. But by the end of the Second World War, many of these houses were unfit for human habitation and plans were soon being made for their demolition. By the end of the 1960s, all of the old houses in the area had been demolished and replaced by a new housing estate that consisted entirely of council flats. There were eight tower blocks and approximately 15 smaller blocks that were between three and six storeys high. The road layout of the estate was also much better than before, and it was soon regarded as one of the best council estates in the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley (which had absorbed Brierley Hill in 1966). .

Brierley Hill is a town and electoral ward in the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley, West Midlands, England, 3 miles south of Dudley and 1 mile north of Stourbridge. Part of the Black Country and in a heavily industrialised area, it has a population of 13,935 at the 2011 census. It is best known for glass and steel manufacturing, although the industry has declined considerably since the 1970s. One of the largest factories in the area was the Round Oak Steelworks, which closed down and was redeveloped in the 1980s to become the Merry Hill Shopping Centre. Brierley Hill was originally in Staffordshire. Since 2008, Brierley Hill has been designated as the Strategic Town Centre of the Dudley Borough.

Delph Locks or the Delph Nine are a series of eight (originally nine) narrow canal locks on the Dudley No. 1 Canal in Brierley Hill, in the West Midlands, England. They were opened in 1779, and reopened in 1967 following restoration of the Dudley Canal and the Stourbridge Canal in a joint venture between the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal Society and the British Waterways Board.

Brierley Hill War Memorial is a war memorial in Brierley Hill, Dudley, England. Erected after World War I, the memorial stands outside St. Michael's church and was unveiled on 12 November 1921. It also now commemorates the dead of World War II, the Korean War, Cyprus Emergency and Malayan Emergency, on separate tablets.The memorial, based on designs by Councillor J.T. Fereday, with additional work by local industrialist and preacher Francis Lane, consists of a statue of a charging infantry soldier, in World War I uniform and carrying a rifle with bayonet fitted, on a square granite column which also features four relief sculptures. The column sits on a limestone terrace with metal railings, supported by brick retaining walls, at the foot of which is a cannon. The statue, panels and corner columns of the plinth are of Sicilian marble. The terrace and statue overlook the nearby Clent Hills.The statue was modelled from photographs of Stanley Harley, the first man from Brierley Hill awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, and made by George Brown and Sons of Kidderminster.The cannon was made by the Brierley Hill firm of Bailey and Pegg in the 18th century.The four reliefs depict: Royal Army Medical Corps tending the wounded (facing Church Street) artillery in action (facing High Street) soldiers going 'over the top' (facing away from Church Street) HMS Arethusa sending out its boats to rescue German sailors from a ship it had sunk (facing away from High Street)Below the four reliefs are the inscriptions: "For freedom", "For homeland", "For righteousness", and "For kindred".Three of the four faces of the column carry the names of the dead of World War I, numbering 205 in all. The fourth, north, face carries the inscription (all in upper case): At the foot of the column are inscribed the names of four theatres of war, "France", "Flanders", "Gallipoli", and "Palestine".The memorial was afforded Grade II listed status in January 2015, for its historic and artistic interest and sculptural value, giving it legal protection from unauthorised alteration or demolition. It was restored in 2021, with two new interpretation panels installed adjacent to it.

Bathams is a brewery in Brierley Hill, West Midlands, England established in 1877 in a former slaughterhouse. The brewery is described by the CAMRA Good Beer Guide as "A classic Black country small brewery". It produces three cask conditioned beers, Best Bitter (4.3%), Mild (3.5%) and XXX (6.3%), a Christmas special. The Best Bitter won its highly contested class at the Great British Beer Festival in 1991. Bottled versions are also available at Bathams pubs. The Brewery is currently run by brothers Tim and Matt Batham, having been in the Batham family for five generations. It is one of few breweries that still use 54-gallon hogshead casks. The Round Oak railway accident happened on 23 August 1858 between Brettell Lane and Round Oak railway stations, on the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway. The breakage of a defective coupling caused seventeen coaches and one brake van, containing about 450 passengers, of an excursion train to run backwards down the steep gradient between the stations, colliding with a following second portion of the excursion. 14 passengers were killed and 50 injured in the disaster. In the words of the Board of Trade accident inspector, Captain H. W. Tyler, it was at the time "decidedly the worst railway accident that has ever occurred in this country".

The Earl of Dudley’s Railway or Pensnett Railway, was a 4 ft 8+1⁄2 in (1,435 mm) standard gauge railway that developed from a single 3-mile (4.8 km) line opened in 1829 to, at its maximum extent, a 40-mile (64 km) long network around the Earl of Dudley’s Iron Works at Round Oak near Brierley Hill.

Withymoor Village is a residential area of Brierley Hill, West Midlands, England. On this present day, Withymoor Village is a local housing estate that consists of approximately 2000 houses but Withymoor was not always a housing estate. In 1971 the site of Withymoor was an opencast colliery. The collieries were called the Plants Hollow and Gayfield Collieries which are now names of streets on the estate. Also while the collieries were on Withymoor there was also another business called William King's Brick Works which was a famous producer of yellow bricks from the local clay which was used in both Amblecote Church and Quarry Bank Church. Most of Withymoor Village was built by Bovis Homes. The first bit of the development was built by Page and Johnson until their takeover by Bovis Homes, who built the remainder of the village. Later Mc Lean Homes built Beechwood Park estate between 1987 and 1989 and then later Seven Dwellings View in the mid-1990s. There was also very little developments built by Cox Homes on Turners Lane around 1985 and Kendrick Homes on the entrance of Norbury Drive and on Gayfield Avenue around the mid-1980s. The village has approximately 2000 homes and is surrounded by a newer development, classed as Amblecote and has always historically been classed as Withymoor Village or Lakeside. In the early 1980s a primary school was built in the village and was named Withymoor Primary School. Around the same time, a doctors surgery and Spar (formerly Dillons and now is One Stop) shop and chemist opened. The local GP was called Dr Rigler, who was a well-known character. In 1985, a J Sainsbury's supermarket opened in the centre of the village along with a Sainsbury's Freezer Centre (later a Chinese takeaway called Jasmine House which is now located on the Caledonian estate) and a newsagent called Preedys which was later changed to a Choices Video Outlet in 2006. The Chinese takeaway and the Choices Video Outlet was later closed due to Sainsbury's expansion plans. In 2007, a new doctor's surgery was built in the centre of the village, opposite Sainsbury's in a better location for transport and parking, which had been a major issue at the old surgery location. The estate also includes a medium-sized lake (hence a newer adjoining estate is known as lakeside) that is supplied by a deep underground river. This ensures that no matter how severe a drought there is, or how much rainfall there is, the lake maintains the same level - within a few inches. The streets in Withymoor now include Thornton Drive, Ravensitch Walk, Plants Hollow, Gayfield Avenue and Warner Drive, somewhere previously named after local curiosities. Gayfield and Plants Hollow are both former coal mines, Ravensitch is named after Wright's Farm off Woods Lane which is nearby and other streets on site are named after English places such as Barsham Drive, Briston Close, Aldeford Drive, Sedgeford Close. Other streets were also named after trees such as Palm Croft, Conifer Close and Fir Croft. Now Withymoor Village is a modern, vibrant community. It is situated less than a mile away from Merry Hill shopping centre and there are nearby train stations in Cradley Health and Lye and Stourbridge . With a large network of cycle paths , that lead onto canals heading either to Stourbridge ( Bonded Warehouse ) and Nine Locks .

The Round Oak Steelworks was a steel production plant in Brierley Hill, West Midlands (formerly Staffordshire), England. It was founded in 1857 by Lord Ward, who later became, in 1860, The 1st Earl of Dudley, as an outlet for pig iron made in the nearby blast furnaces. During the Industrial Revolution, the majority of iron-making in the world was carried out within 32 kilometres of Round Oak. For the first decades of operation, the works produced wrought iron. However, in the 1890s, steelmaking was introduced. At its peak, thousands of people were employed at the works. The steelworks was the first in the United Kingdom to be converted to natural gas, which was supplied from the North Sea. The works were nationalized in 1951, privatized in 1953 and nationalized again in 1967 although the private firm Tube Investments continued to part manage the operations at the site. The steelworks closed in December 1982.
