Hammersmith Bridge

On 24 April 1996, the Provisional IRA planted two powerful bombs underneath Hammersmith Bridge in west London. Although the detonators caused two small explosions, the bomb itself failed to explode. The bomb was located on the south side of the bridge and contained 30 lb (14 kg) of Semtex high explosives, which according to an explosives expert had the ability to blow up the entire bridge. The IRA gave two telephone warnings, the first at 22:22. Police located the device afterwards before it caused small explosions around 22:50. Scotland Yard said it was "meant to kill, cause injury and major structural damage to Hammersmith Bridge".The bombing attempt came on the day that Sinn Féin announced its participation in Northern Ireland elections in May to the Northern Ireland Forum. It also occurred on the anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising.Afterwards, the bridge was closed for three years for works. On 1 June 2000, the Real IRA, an IRA splinter group formed after the Good Friday Agreement, attempted to bomb the bridge again, but it did not cause significant damage. The bridge was also previously targeted by the IRA in 1939, under the S-Plan.

Kent House is a grade II listed building in Hammersmith, London. It was built in 1762, and for 150 years was the home of Hammersmith Working Men's Club. The building was renovated in 2006–2013.

The Blue Anchor is a pub at 13 Lower Mall, Hammersmith, London, that dates from 1722. The pub was first licensed on 9 June 1722 to a Mr. John Savery, originally known as the Blew Anchor and Washhouses.On 7 January 1789, a whole sheep, bought for sixteen shillings, was roasted outside.In the Victorian era, various partitions were added to the interior, but they have been removed. There is a "rather sombre" collection of artefacts from the First World War.The pub featured in the Gwyneth Paltrow 1998 movie Sliding Doors, where her character is seen dancing with John Hannah and others after a boat race. The pub also regularly featured in episodes of the British television show New Tricks. Gustav Holst was a frequent visitor and composed his Hammersmith Suite there.The Blue Anchor is owned by the Bermuda-based Property Trust Group.

Auriol Kensington Rowing Club is a rowing club in Hammersmith, west London, England. The club was formed in 1981 by the amalgamation of Auriol Rowing Club which was founded in 1896 and Kensington Rowing Club which was founded in 1872. The clubhouse is on Lower Mall adjacent to Hammersmith Bridge. Rowing is divided into senior squads for oarsmen and women, a novice group and a masters section for those 27+ not entering Senior (foremost adult) races. Groups compete throughout the year at events such as the Fours Head, the Women's Eights Head of the River Race, the Head of the River Race, the Veterans Head during the winter and, on a different stretch of river in the summer, Henley Women's Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta. The club and its predecessors have a good record of winners of the Wingfield Sculls. The club also annually enters competitions in the Lea Valley, upstream to Reading, Berkshire, including multi-lane national events at Dorney Lake such as 'the Met' and Wallingford Regattas, manage to send crews to compete in the nearest weekly summer regattas elsewhere and leading oarsmen and women in most years find a competition in which to compete abroad. Its nationally notable adult winners since 2010 have included trainee Olympic professional athletes and have won race categories including in the Wingfield Sculls, Weybridge Silver Sculls and the 2013 Masters British Championships. It is a mid-ranking London club by high level success. Away from the highest categories of Senior and Junior, its crews tend to achieve alike success to other clubs in London including those on the Putney Embankment; plus some exceptional single scullers.

The Rutland Arms is a public house at 15 Lower Mall, Hammersmith, London, England. It was also called the Rutland Hotel.The Rutland Arms opened around 1849 and was rebuilt in the 1870s. During the Blitz, the pub lost its top floor and balcony.

Furnivall Sculling Club is a rowing club based on the Tideway in Hammersmith, London. It was for a time called Hammersmith Sculling Club. It was founded in 1896 by Doctor Frederick Furnivall, after whom the riverside Furnivall Gardens a few metres away are named. For its initial five years, in the reign of Queen Victoria, the club was for females only and is widely considered to have had the world's first female rowing team (crew). Furnivall has also admitted males since 1901. The club colours are a precise pallette: myrtle and old gold.

Riverside Studios is an arts centre on the banks of the River Thames in Hammersmith, London, England. The venue plays host to contemporary performance, film, visual art exhibitions and television production. Having closed for redevelopment in September 2014, Riverside Studios reopened in August 2019 with one of the first television broadcasts to come from Studio 1 at Riverside was the 2019 December UK election coverage on Channel 4.

Westcott Lodge is a Grade II listed house in Lower Mall, Hammersmith, London. It was originally St Paul's Vicarage, and built in 1746, with some later remodelling, and restoration after damage during World War II.In 1962, it was the first home of the Hammersmith Chess Club, which met there until 1970, when it had grown too large, and moved to St Paul's Church Hall. The first president was the eccentric Lady Herbert, wife of A. P. Herbert from 1966. 1968 saw the British champion, Dr. Jonathan Penrose, play a simultaneous display at the club, winning 17 games and drawing two.In 1963, a street lamp that had formerly been in West Berlin was given by Willy Brandt, then Mayor of West Berlin, to mark Hammersmith's twinning with the Berlin (previously West Berlin) district of Neukölln. The lamp now stands on the house's wall, facing nearby Furnival Gardens. Below it is a plaque which reads: "The lamp above this plaque was formerly used to light a street in West Berlin. It was presented by Herr Willi Brandt, Mayor of West Berlin to Councillor Stanley Atkins, L. P., The Worshipful the Mayor of Hammersmith, as a token of friendship between the two communities on the occasion of the Jumelage held in this Borough, 1st June 1963."

Furnival Gardens (also spelt Furnivall Gardens) is a park in Hammersmith alongside the river Thames. It was once the location of the mouth of Hammersmith Creek, which had an active fishing trade until about 200 years ago. The creek was filled in during 1936.In 1948, it was decided that there should be a public open space on bomb-damaged land between the river and the Great West Road, to coincide with the 1951 Festival of Britain. The new riverside park was named after the scholar Dr Frederick James Furnivall, who founded what is now the Furnivall Sculling Club in 1896. A garden area was created on what had been the Hammersmith Friends Meeting House burial ground, destroyed by a flying bomb in the war.In 1963, a street lamp that had formerly been in West Berlin was given by Willy Brandt, then Mayor of West Berlin, to mark Hammersmith's twinning with the Berlin (previously West Berlin) district of Neukölln. It now stands on the wall of Westcott Lodge, facing the gardens. Below it is a plaque which reads: "The lamp above this plaque was formerly used to light a street in West Berlin. It was presented by Herr Willi Brandt, Mayor of West Berlin to Councillor Stanley Atkins, L. P., The Worshipful the Mayor of Hammersmith, as a token of friendship between the two communities on the occasion of the Jumelage held in this Borough, 1st June 1963."

Hammersmith Creek was an outflow river of the Stamford Brook, and used to run through what is now King Street, into the Thames at the present-day site of Furnivall Gardens in Hammersmith.Until the early 19th century the creek was navigable over this distance, and was the scene of much industry with malt houses and boatbuilders along the banks, as well as being a route for cargo transportation.However, by the early 20th century the creek was no longer the site of such activity, and it was filled in 1936 with Furnivall Gardens being built on the location in 1951. Today, only a small drainage tunnel visible over the wall at Furnivall Gardens remains as evidence of Hammersmith Creek.

Castelnau is a road in Barnes, in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, south west London, approximately 5.1 miles (8.2 km) west from Charing Cross on the south side of the River Thames. About 1.1 miles (1.8 km) long, it is the main road south from Hammersmith Bridge and forms part of the A306 road. It was originally named Upper Bridge Road. The name Castelnau is also used informally for Castelnau Estate and the area surrounding the road. An area of Barnes including Castelnau was designated a conservation area in 1977.

The Hope and Anchor is a Grade II listed public house at 20 Macbeth Street, Hammersmith, London.It is on the Campaign for Real Ale's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.It was built in 1936 for Truman's Brewery, but the architect is not known. It is described by English Heritage as a "particularly fine and intact example of an inter-war pub in a Neo-Georgian style".As of 2012, it is closed and available to let.
