Wilkes University is a private university in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. It has over 2,200 undergraduates and over 2,200 graduate students (both full and part-time). Wilkes was founded in 1933 as a satellite campus of Bucknell University, and became an independent institution in 1947, naming itself Wilkes College, after English radical politician John Wilkes after whom Wilkes-Barre is named. The school was granted university status in January 1990. It is classified among "Doctoral/Professional Universities" and accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.The university's mascot is a Colonel and the official colors are blue and yellow. The campus symbol is a letter "W" known as the "flying W" by students and alumni.

Weiss Hall, also known as the Judge Edmund Taylor House, is an historic, American dormitory that is located on the campus of Wilkes University at Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Catlin Hall, also known as George Catlin Hall and Reynolds House, is a historic dormitory located on the campus of Wilkes University at Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1843, and is a 2 1/2-story, rectangular brick building in the Greek Revival style. It has a two-story rear wing. It was built as the Reynolds family residence and used as such into the 1950s, after which it was sold to Wilkes College in 1957. It was used as the women's residence hall and named for Wilkes-Barre native, painter George Catlin.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Elmer L. Meyers Junior/Senior High School (commonly known throughout the area as 'E. L. Meyers' or 'Meyers') was an urban, public school located on 341 Carey Avenue, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. It was one of three public high schools in the Wilkes-Barre Area School District. Meyers was both a junior and senior public high school, offering education to approximately 898 students in grades 7–12. The student to teacher ratio was approximately 12.6 students per teacher. Meyers' sports teams were called "Mohawks".

Wilkes–Barre Area School District is an urban public school district located in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The district encompasses approximately 123 square miles. The district includes the city of Wilkes-Barre as well as smaller surrounding municipalities. It serves: Bear Creek Township, Borough of Bear Creek Village, Borough of Laflin, Buck Township, City of Wilkes-Barre, Laurel Run Borough, Plains Township and Wilkes-Barre Township. According to 2000 federal census data, the district serves a resident population of 62,749. In 2009, the residents' per capita income was $16,751, while the median family income was $40,336.As of 2020–2021, total student enrollment in the district was 7.089, according to National Center for Education Statistics data. The district operates five elementary schools, one middle school, one junior high school and one high school, Wilkes-Barre Area High School.

Founded in 1984, it is headquartered at the Osterhout Free Library in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Along with hosting various permanent and temporary collections of books and media, the member libraries provide various services and activities.

Artillery Park is a ballpark in Kingston, a suburb of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, USA. Notable tenants include the Wilkes University Colonels and the Wilkes-Barre Barons. It was the location of Babe Ruth's longest home run. It used to be the home of the Wilkes-Barre Barons of the New York–Penn League and later the Eastern League.

The Luzerne County Historical Society is one of the oldest continually operating local historical societies in America. It was founded on February 11, 1858, in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the first successful burning of anthracite coal by Jesse Fell, and was originally named the Wyoming Historical and Geological Society. The organization operates the historic Swetland Homestead in Wyoming, Pennsylvania and the Luzerne County Museum which also features a separate research library in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. It also administers the Nathan Denison house.

The Kingston Armory is an historic National Guard armory that is located in Kingston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
