Government Cut is a manmade shipping channel between Miami Beach and Fisher Island, which allows better access to the Port of Miami in Miami, Florida. Before the cut was established, a single peninsula of dry land stretched from what is now Miami Beach to what is now Fisher Island, and boats destined for the port at the mouth of the Miami River had to pass around Cape Florida, to the south of Key Biscayne. Opened in 1905, the cut across the peninsula that is now Miami Beach was authorized by the U.S. government (hence the name), in order to provide a direct route from the Atlantic Ocean on the east to the seaport on Biscayne Bay to the west, without having to detour southward. The cut across the mangroves and beach at the southern end of the peninsula created Fisher Island, which except for the extreme northeast corner, is part of unincorporated Miami-Dade County, Florida. The now-famous South Beach is to the north of the cut.

Joe's Stone Crab, also known as Joe's Stone Crabs, is an American restaurant in Miami Beach, Florida. In 1998 the restaurant won an America’s Classic Award from the James Beard FoundationJoe Weiss began his Miami Beach career by cooking at Smith's Casino beginning in 1913. On December 4, 1920, Joe officially opened his own restaurant at 213 Biscayne Avenue (later called Biscayne Street and now called South Pointe Drive), practically across the street from the restaurant he operated for Smith’s Casino. Joe's is the biggest buyer of Florida stone crab claws, and it plays a significant role in the industry, influencing the wholesale price and financing many crabbers.Even though stone crabs are their most famous dish now, fish was served, rather than crabs, after the restaurant's opening. When an ichthyologist asked Weiss why he didn't serve stone crabs, he answered that no one would want to eat them. He was wrong, as they found out soon after first cooking them.

The Beth Jacob Social Hall and Congregation (also known as the Beth Jacob Synagogue) was the first synagogue in Miami Beach, Florida. It is located at 301 and 311 Washington Avenue. The building at 311 was built in 1929 and designed by H Fraser Rose. The building at 301 was built in 1936 and was designed by Henry Hohauser. On October 16, 1980, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. It is no longer a synagogue, but houses the Jewish Museum of Florida.

The building has 3 tiers on a 4.5-acre (18,000 m2) site, and has over 600 linear ft along Biscayne Bay. It is the eighth tallest skyscraper in Miami Beach.Developed by Thomas Kramer's Portofino Group in partnership with the Related Group of Florida, Murano at Portofino includes eight different style floor plans ranging from 1,000 sq ft (93 m2). to 3,400 sq ft (320 m2).
