Ruhmeshalle (Wuppertal)

Vorwerk & Co. KG, trading as Vorwerk (German pronunciation: [ˈfoːɐ̯ˌvɛʁk]), is an international diversified corporate group headquartered in Wuppertal, Germany. Vorwerk was founded in 1883. The main business is the direct distribution of various products like household appliances such as Thermomix, a kitchen appliance, and Kobold vacuum cleaners, fitted kitchens and cosmetics. The company, which is family-owned and operated as a limited partnership, reported having 12,000 full-time employees and over 590,000 self-employed sales representatives in more than 70 countries worldwide as of 2014. The largest proportion of sales representatives (546,000) work for the US-based subsidiary JAFRA Cosmetics. The company posted revenue of €2.8 billion in 2014.

Barmen is a former industrial metropolis of the region of Bergisches Land, Germany, which merged with four other towns in 1929 to form the city of Wuppertal. Barmen, together with the neighbouring town of Elberfeld founded the first electric suspended monorail tramway system, the Schwebebahn floating tram.

The Leimbach or Lehmbeck is a river of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is a right tributary of the Wupper in Wuppertal.

Wuppertal-Barmen station is a station in the city of Wuppertal in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia on the Elberfeld–Dortmund railway. Its entrance building is protected as a monument. It was Barmen Hauptbahnhof prior to Barmen's incorporation in Wuppertal in 1929. Before the Second World War it was an important stop for express trains and had substantial freight traffic. Its importance declined after the war in favour of Oberbarmen and since the renaming of the Elberfeld station as Wuppertal Hauptbahnhof. The Opernhaus Wuppertal is nearby.

Schauspielhaus Wuppertal was a Schauspielhaus, a theatre for plays, in Wuppertal, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The 745-seat municipal theatre is on Bundesallee next to the river Wupper in Elberfeld. Designed by Gerhard Graubner, it was opened in 1966, run from 2001 by 'Wuppertaler Bühnen' (Wuppertal Stages, municipal theatres in Wuppertal). Starting in 2009, the house operated only 135 seats, and it was closed on 30 June 2013.

Opernhaus Wuppertal (Wuppertal Opera House) is a German theatre in Wuppertal, North Rhine-Westphalia. It houses mostly performances of operas, but also plays, run by the municipal Wuppertaler Bühnen. The house is also the venue for dance performances by the Tanztheater Wuppertal company created by Pina Bausch. The house was built in 1905 on a design by Carl Moritz as the Stadttheater Barmen ("Barmen Municipal Theatre"). It was partially rebuilt after being severely damaged during World War II and again restored over the period 2006–2009. The theatre is located in the center of Wuppertal-Barmen, served by the Wuppertal Suspension Railway and Wuppertal-Barmen station.

Tuffi (born 1946, India – died 1989, Paris, France) was a female Asian elephant that became famous in West Germany during 1950 when she accidentally fell from the Wuppertal Schwebebahn into the River Wupper underneath. On 21 July 1950, the circus director Franz Althoff (de) had Tuffi, then four years old, travel on the suspended monorail in Wuppertal, as a publicity stunt. The elephant trumpeted wildly and ran through the carriage, broke through a window and fell 12 metres (39 ft) down into the River Wupper, suffering only minor injuries. A panic had broken out in the carriage and some passengers were injured. Althoff helped the elephant out of the water. Both the circus director and the official who had allowed the ride were fined. Tuffi was sold to Cirque Alexis Gruss (fr) in 1968; she died there in 1989.No photograph of the incident is known; a widely circulated postcard picture is a montage. A building near the location of the incident, between the stations Alter Markt and Adlerbrücke, features a painting of Tuffi. A local milk-factory has chosen the name as a brand. The Wuppertal tourist information keeps an assortment of Tuffi-related souvenirs, local websites show original pictures. In 1970 Marguerita Eckel and Ernst-Andreas Ziegler published a children's picture book about the incident titled Tuffi und die Schwebebahn (“Tuffi and the suspension railway”).

Engels-Haus is a museum in Wuppertal, Germany, located in the house where Friedrich Engels (1820–1895) grew up. The museum is a constituent member of the Museum of Industrial Culture in Wuppertal. The late baroque Berg house was built in 1775 by Eberhard Haarmann in what was then Barmen, Berg. The father of Engels, Friedrich Engels Sr., was born in the house in 1796. Engels himself was born in a different house owned by the family approximately 100 m (330 ft) to the east that has since been destroyed, but spent his youth growing up at Engels-Haus. The museum was opened in 1970 on the 150th anniversary of Engels' birth, and became a popular destination for tourists and socialists. The museum was closed in 2016 for refurbishment. The museum's planned re-opening in 2020 for the 200th anniversary of Engels' birth was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, in the presence of the Minister for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, Isabel Pfeiffer-Poensgen, and over 300 guests, the museum was reopened with the new permanent exhibition on the life and work of Friedrich Engels on 11 September 2021. The highlight of this event was the unveiling of the international art project Inside out Engels.

Wuppertal-Oberbarmen station is a station in the city of Wuppertal in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It was long an important railway junction, connecting to four railway lines. The only remaining lines at the station are the Dortmund–Wuppertal main line and the branch line to Solingen.

Schwarzbach is a small river of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is a right tributary of the Wupper in Wuppertal.

Oberbarmen is the eastern terminal of the Wuppertal Schwebebahn; it is located in the Barmen area of Wuppertal. The terminal consists of two buildings, the station proper and the depot with the loop for the train to turn around. The depot holds trains during the night. The buildings are suspended above the Wupper and separated by a bridge, the Wupperbrücke Berliner Platz. The main works for maintenance and repair are at the Vohwinkel Schwebebahn terminal. The Oberbarmen station is at kilometer 13.3 of the Schwebebahn track. Next to the Schwebebahn station is the Wuppertal-Oberbarmen station of the railway, along with bus links to surrounding areas.

The company Klauser, also known as Klauser Schuhe or Schuhhaus Klauser, is one of the largest owner-operated shoe retailers in Germany. With its main office located in Wuppertal, the company employs 1900 people in 130 branches. Klauser celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2011.
