Globe Theatre (Boston, 1903)

The Hayden Building is a historic building at 681-683 Washington Street in Boston, Massachusetts. The building was built in 1875 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 as well as designated a Boston Landmark in 1977 Designed to act as commercial retail space, this four story brownstone building shows little of the ornamentation generally associated with Henry Hobson Richardson. It is the last surviving commercial retail building designed by Richardson in Boston. The building is in Boston's Chinatown neighborhood.

"Combat Zone" was the name given in the 1960s to the adult entertainment district in downtown Boston, Massachusetts. Centered on Washington Street between Boylston Street and Kneeland Street, the area was once the site of many strip clubs, peep shows, X-rated movie theaters, and adult bookstores. It had a reputation for crime, including prostitution. In 1974, in an attempt to contain the spread of adult businesses, the Boston Redevelopment Authority officially designated the Combat Zone as the city's adult entertainment district. For a variety of reasons, such as rising property values and the introduction of home video technology, most of the adult businesses in the area have since closed, and the "Combat Zone" moniker has become obsolete.

The Gaiety Theatre (1908–1949) or Gayety Theatre of Boston, Massachusetts, was located at no.661 Washington Street near Boylston Street in today's Boston Theater District. It featured burlesque, vaudeville and cinema. Performers included Clark and McCullough, Solly Ward, and Lena Daley; producers included Charles H. Waldron, Earl Carroll, and E.M. Loew. In 1949 it became the "Publix Theatre." The building existed until its razing in 2005.

The Lyceum Theatre was a theatre in Boston, Massachusetts located at 661-667 Washinton St at the corner of Boylston and Washington streets. It opened as the Boylston Museum (also called the New Boylston Museum) in 1875 at 667 Washington St. It operated as both a theatre and a dime museum. Its founder, George E. Lothrop, acquired the adjacent properties and greatly expanded the theatre. This expanded facility opened as the World's Museum (also called World's Theatre and the World's Museum, Menagerie and Aquarium) in 1885. In 1892 the theatre ceased being a dime museum and was renamed the Lyceum Theatre after undergoing significant alterations. It was demolished in June 1908. The Gaiety Theatre was built on the same site in 1908.

Gordon's Olympia Theatre (est. 1910s) in Boston, Massachusetts, was established by Nathan H. Gordon of Olympia Theatres, Inc. Architect Clarence Blackall designed the building at no.658 Washington Street, near Boylston Street in the theatre district. It later became the Pilgrim Theater. The building was demolished in 1996.In late 1974, the Pilgrim Theater was the site of a drunken rant and press conference by House Ways and Means Committee chairman Wilbur Mills at the height of his sex scandal with Fanne Foxe, which prompted his resignation from the committee shortly afterwards.

The Liberty Tree District is a historic district encompassing a collection of six mid-scale commercial buildings between the Downtown Crossing area and the Theater District of Boston, Massachusetts. They are clustered around the corner of Washington and Essex Streets, on the edge of the area known in the 20th century has Boston's Combat Zone, or adult entertainment district. The area is historically significant as the site in the 1760s of the Liberty Tree and the Liberty Tree Tavern, a focal point of colonial discontent against British rule. This significance is reflected in a carved relief on the Liberty Tree Block, a brick commercial block built in 1850 at the corner of Washington and Essex. The building was designated as a Boston Landmark by the Boston Landmarks Commission in 1985. The district features Greek Revival, Late Victorian, and Italianate architecture. The area was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

The White Horse was a tavern in Boston, Massachusetts, in the 17th and 18th centuries. A well-known gathering place in colonial Boston, it "had a large square sign projecting over the footway, on which was delineated a white charger." Located near Boylston Street, the White Horse was frequently mentioned as a wayfinder to other establishments nearby. A number of taverns were clustered on old Newbury Street in the 18th century: Lamb Tavern, Liberty Tavern, and Red Lion. For at least some years of its existence, possibly around 1798, the White Horse building "was of wood and of two stories," with 26 windows.Prior to 1700, the White Horse was owned by the William Colburn (aka William Colburne) family. Under the ownership of Thomas Brattle (1700-ca.1740), the tavern was managed by Thomas Chamberlain (licensed in 1717), and William Cleeres (licensed in 1718). After Brattle, the tavern was owned by Jonathan Dwight (1740-ca.1765?). Managers included Mrs. Moulton (licensed in 1764). The next owner was Joseph Morton (1765–1791). In May, 1787, Israel Hatch of Attleboro took over as manager of the tavern. Subsequent owners included Joseph Morton's son, Perez Morton (1791-1799); and Aaron Emmes (1799).The White Horse is featured in a scene in the novel The Rebels: Or, Boston Before the Revolution by Lydia Maria Child (1850).

The Dill Building is an historic building at 11–25 Stuart Street in Boston, Massachusetts. The six story brick building was constructed in two phases between 1886 and 1888. Its facade is symmetrical, each half of floors 3–5 organized into window groups separated by brick pilasters. There is a corbelled cornice line between floors 5 and 6, with the window pattern continued on the sixth floor without pilasters. The main roof line is also corbelled, with two stepped parapet sections inscribed with the construction dates. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.Previous tenants in the building include the American Red Cross, M & M Realty Trust, Smith Barney and Citibank. In 2012, Hostelling International opened a 468 hostel (HI-Boston) after a complete renovation of the building. After more than a year of construction, the completed building encompasses 55,000 sq ft over 6 floors. The renovation preserves and exposes historical features of the building.

The Beach-Knapp District encompasses a collection of six 19th-century buildings in the Chinatown neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. It is centered at the corner of Beach and Knapp Streets, and includes three buildings on the south side of Beach Street, and three on the east side of Knapp. The buildings encapsulate the transition of the area from a predominantly residential area to a mixed residential-light industrial area in the 19th century. At 5 and 7 Knapp Street stand two Greek Revival residential structures, both built in the 1830s. The four story Renaissaince Revival building at 7-15 Beach Street was built c. 1885, and was historically used as a hotel. The other three buildings, 17-23 Beach, 25-29 Beach, and 9-23 Knapp, are all commercial buildings dating between 1885 and 1906; two of them were designed by Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge.The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Boylston Market (1810-1887), designed by architect Charles Bulfinch, was located in Boston, Massachusetts, on the corner of Boylston and Washington Streets. Boylston Hall occupied the third floor of the building, and functioned as a performance and meeting space.

The Boylston Building is an historic building at 2–22 Boylston Street in Boston, Massachusetts. The six-story sandstone building was designed by Carl Fehmer and built in 1887 by Woodbury & Leighton. It is an early instance in Boston of a skeleton-built commercial structure, rather than having load-bearing masonry walls. The building housed the Boylston Market, a wholesale trading exchange which had been on the site since 1810 (in a building designed by Charles Bulfinch).It was designated as Boston Landmark in 1977 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Chinatown is a rapid transit station on the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Orange Line, located at the edge of the Chinatown neighborhood in downtown Boston. The station has two offset side platforms, which run under Washington Street from Hayward Place to Lagrange Street. The three entrances are located at the intersection of Washington Street with Essex and Boylston streets. Like all Orange Line stations, both the subway platforms and all bus connections are fully accessible. Boylston (southbound) and Essex (northbound) stations opened as part of the Washington Street Tunnel in 1908. The whole station was renamed Essex in 1967, then Chinatown in 1987. The southbound side was modernized in the 1970s, followed by the northbound side a decade later. The latter renovation added an elevator to the northbound side, with a southbound elevator added in 2002. Silver Line service began in 2002. The MBTA plans to reopen two 1970s-closed entrances at Hayward Place and Lagrange Street.
