El Capitan Dam

El Capitan Reservoir is a reservoir in central San Diego County, California. It is in the Cuyamaca Mountains, about 30 miles (48 km) northeast of the city of San Diego and two miles northwest of the town of Alpine. The reservoir is formed by El Capitan Dam on the San Diego River and has a capacity of 112,800 acre⋅ft (139.1 million m3). The 237-foot (72 m) dam is composed of hydraulic fill and was completed in 1934. The dam is owned by the city of San Diego (Originally owned by the Kumeyaae tribe) and its primary purpose is to supply drinking water. In order to make way for the construction of the dam, the native Kumeyaay people were forcibly relocated to the Capitan Grande Reservation. The amount of runoff that enters the reservoir varies considerably. During a 25-year period, it ranged from 1,000 to 70,000 acre⋅ft (1.2 to 86.3 million m3) per year (39 to 2,700 L/s). The water in the reservoir usually consists of runoff from above the dam, but in years of drought, water is sometimes transferred to it from San Vicente Reservoir, which is the terminus of the First San Diego Aqueduct. According to the City of San Diego's General Plan Seismic Element, Division of Safety of Dams engineers "restricted the maximum water surface of El Capitan Dam to an elevation 30 feet lower than spillway, although permitting the temporary storage of storm inflows above the specified level for short periods." This requirement was added after the 1971 San Fernando earthquake, where "a loss of about 30 feet of dam height resulted" at the Lower Van Norman Dam due to "liquefaction of the hydraulic fill on the upstream side of the embankment". There is limited recreation available at the reservoir. Boating and water skiing are available from May through October. Personal water craft are limited to a designated zone, except when towing someone. Also, the long and narrow north arm of the lake is only open to watercraft on Sundays. Fishing is allowed all year. There is no camping at the lake. The nearest camping site is 8.5 miles (13.7 km) away at Lake Jennings or 12.5 miles (20.1 km) away at Viejas Campground.

Alpine is a census-designated place (CDP) in the Cuyamaca Mountains of San Diego County, California. Alpine had a population of 14,696 at the 2020 census, up from 14,236 at the 2010 census. The town is largely surrounded by the Cleveland National Forest and borders two reservations of the Kumeyaay Nation, Viejas and Sycuan, and the rural unincorporated areas around the city of El Cajon.

Alpine Beer Company is an American brewery founded in 1999 by Pat McIlhenney in Alpine, California. Alpine Beer Company produces a variety of beers, many of which have high alcohol content and are strongly hopped beers. The beers have acquired a following due to the popularity of such beers as Pure Hoppiness and Exponential Hoppiness IPAs. Alpine Beer Company was ranked as the fifth best brewery in the US in 2006 by Beer Advocate. Some Alpine sour beers have been mentioned in the Los Angeles Times as "part of a new wave of refreshing American sour beers".Alpine has won three Great American Beer Festival medals and eight World Beer Cup medals. In 2003, Alpine won the Bronze in the GABF for its Mandarin Nectar and in 2004 won a silver for McIlhenney’s Irish Red. It was also awarded a gold medal in the 2004 World Beer Cup and a Silver in 2008 for McIlhenney’s Irish Red. In 2016 Alpine was awarded the GABF bronze medal in the Strong Pale Ale category for their HFS IPA.Prior to founding its own brewery in 2002, Alpine Beer Company had been contracting brewing of its “McIlhenney’s Irish Red”, from AleSmith Brewing Company. In November 2014, Alpine Beer Company was acquired by fellow San Diego brewery Green Flash Brewing Company.

The Descanso, Alpine and Pacific Railway is a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge heritage railroad owned and being relocated by the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo, California. It was owned by Roy Athey and it opened in Alpine in May 1990. This little operation was a sole proprietorship and has one locomotive, a 1935 Brookville Equipment Corporation unit. The railroad had three stations; Shade, El Pozo and High Pass. The railway offered free train rides and historical narration to the public on most Sundays.

Wright's Field in Alpine is a 230-acre nature reserve in Alpine, California. The property was purchased in 1990 by Back Country Land Trust.The ecosystems found in Wright's Field include native grassland, Engelmann oak woodland, riparian (streamside) habitat, vernal pools, and coastal sage scrub/chaparral. Native and nonnative plants found in Wright's Field include sunflowers, buckwheat, sugarbush, canchalagua, wallflowers and Engelmann oak trees among others. Special wildlife in this field are the Hermes copper butterfly and the Quino checkerspot butterfly. Also, a conservation project for the rare plant, thornmint, is currently being held in this field with successful amounts of progress and research.

Harbison Canyon is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Diego County, California. Harbison Canyon had a population of 4,048 as of the 2020 census, up from 3,841 as of the 2010 census.

The Barona Group of Capitan Grande Band of Mission Indians of the Barona Reservation is a federally recognized tribe of Kumeyaay Indians, who are sometimes known as Mission Indians.

Sand Creek is a tributary of the San Diego River in San Diego County, California.

Silverwood Wildlife Sanctuary is a nature preserve owned and operated by the San Diego Audubon Society (SDAS). Silverwood was set up in 1965 to preserve coastal chaparral and riparian woodland habitats. It is also a nature education facility for San Diego area schoolchildren and adults, and functions as part of a wildlife migration corridor.
