Platt Bridge is a settlement in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, Greater Manchester, England, 2 miles (3.2 km) south of Wigan town centre along the spine of the A573 road. Historically part of the Hindley Urban District, in Lancashire, the area is now a residential suburb of Wigan. The first mention of Platt Bridge in documents occurs in 1599. The name comes from "plat" or "platte" meaning a foot-bridge.Platt Bridge borders Abram, Bamfurlong, Hindley and Ince-in-Makerfield. Platt Bridge's border with Bamfurlong is marked by a brook which runs under the A58 and is shown by an ancient marker stone. Two railways pass through Platt Bridge; one, the West Coast Main Line, the other a disused industrial line. Platt Bridge had a railway station on the Manchester and Wigan Railway line that closed in 1969. Two schools in Platt Bridge, Low Hall County Primary School and Saint Nathaniel's C.E. Primary were closed and amalgamated into a new school Platt Bridge Community School, designed by NPS and opened in November 2006. It is a modern 'state-of-the-art' extended school. In addition there is a Sure Start children's centre, a family centre and a children's and adults' public library. On the site, there is a primary care trust health facility and a housing office. There are four churches in the area: the parish church St Nathaniel's (Church of England), built in 1905; Holy Family & St Wilfrid (Roman Catholic); an Independent Methodist Chapel (Methodist); and a Church of Christ (Churches of Christ). On 31 May 2012, the Olympic Torch procession passed through Platt Bridge en route from Stoke-on-Trent to Bolton.

The Maypole Colliery disaster was a mining accident on 18 August 1908, when an underground explosion occurred at the Maypole Colliery, in Abram, near Wigan, then in the historic county of Lancashire, in North West England. The final death toll was 76.

St John the Evangelist's Church is in Warrington Road, Abram, Wigan, Greater Manchester, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Wigan, the archdeaconry of Warrington, and the diocese of Liverpool. The church was built in 1935–37 to replace an older church built in 1838 that had been damaged by mining subsidence. It was designed by the Lancaster architect Henry Paley of Austin and Paley, and built at a cost of £11,113 (equivalent to £730,000 in 2020), providing seating for 478 people. The foundation stone of the original building was laid on 9 March 1836 by Sir Henry Gunning, and it was consecrated on 9 June 1838 by the Bishop of Chester. The present church is constructed in stone from Darley Dale, and has a short squat west tower with a saddleback roof. The stained glass in the west window, and two of the wall monuments in the church were moved from the old church. The two-manual pipe organ was made by Richardson and Sons, and was also moved from the old church. The churchyard contains the war graves of seven soldiers of World War I, and three soldiers and two airmen of World War II.

Wigan Springs Branch TMD is a traction maintenance depot located in Ince in Makerfield, Greater Manchester, England. The depot is situated on the West Coast Main Line and is about 2 km (1.2 mi) south of Wigan North Western station. Springs Branch depot was rebuilt and reopened on 7 February 2020.The depot code is SP. From March 1958 until the introduction of TOPS in May 1973, it was 8F.

Ince-in-Makerfield or Ince is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, in Greater Manchester, England. The population of the Ince ward at the 2011 census was 13,486, but a southern part of Ince was also listed under the Abram ward (north of Warrington Road in this ward). Adding on this area brings the total in 2011 to 15,664. Within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire, Ince is contiguous to Wigan and is a residential suburb. Divided by a railway line into two separate areas - Higher Ince and Lower Ince, from 1894 Ince was an urban district of the administrative county of Lancashire and in 1974 became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan.

Platt Bridge in Wigan, Greater Manchester, England, is a residential area to the south of Ince-in-Makerfield and North of Abram. After many pub closures the one that is left is "Kesses". It has a long-established traditional barber shop "The Barber Shop or Mike's" opposite the Community Centre, Walthew Lane. There are a few main shops such as the famous "Shergills" although this shop has changed hands a few times it is still known as this, a Co-Op, an Iceland Foods, and a car wash. The Post Office has Handymans Store next door once owned by "John Roberts" who is now deceased, but it is run by his sons still. there is now a precinct with a few more shops such as Galloway bakery, one stop shop a chippy and a betting office. McDonalds is also in Platt Bridge on Liverpool road. Many famous characters/legends have come from this area of Wigan and even a few athletes and musicians.

Amberswood (Hindley) railway station was in Hindley, Wigan (now in Greater Manchester, England) on the Whelley Loop section of the Lancashire Union Railway. The station was situated where the A577 passed under the line.
