The settlement is located along Davidson Mill Road (formerly named Cottageville Road) at the former Newark–Trenton Fast Line right-of-way, now a PSE&G transmission line corridor. The trolley stop at the settlement allowed for summer cottages to be built in the area leading to the area's name. Today, some of the older homes remain in addition to a summer camp, forest land, and PSE&G's Deans substation.

Deans is an unincorporated community located within South Brunswick Township in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States.Deans originated from its location on both Crosswicknung Trail (Georges Road) and Lawrence Brook. Dams were built on the brook, creating Deans Pond. The center of the community is centered about the intersection of Deans Lane (County Route 610) and Georges Road (CR 697). CR 610 continues east from the community on Deans Rhode Hall Road; other transportation facilities that pass near Deans include U.S. Route 130 just east of the community and the Northeast Corridor railroad to the west (a station serving the community once existed). Residential homes dot the area around Deans but some businesses line nearby arterial roads and large warehouses are situated along Industrial Way at US 130.

The community was named for William L. Dayton, a local attorney who later served in the United States Senate or for Jonathan Dayton, the youngest person to sign the United States Constitution, who later served as a United States Senator from New Jersey. The area had been known as Cross Roads and was renamed in 1866 to avoid confusion with mail that was sent to another post office that shared the name.

It is an undeveloped park, with a mix of habitats including open ponds and uplands hardwood forests. It also includes a good example of an inner coastal plain lowland deciduous hardwood forest. At one time, it was a major nesting site for passenger pigeons before they became extinct. It was declared a National Natural Landmark in December 1976.The park is located in the Lawrence Brook watershed.
