Oakland (Parkersburg, West Virginia)

Parkersburg is a city in and the county seat of Wood County, West Virginia, United States. Located at the confluence of the Ohio and Little Kanawha rivers, it is the state's third-most populous city and the center of the Parkersburg–Vienna metropolitan area. The city's population was 29,749 at the 2020 census, and its metro population was 89,490. The city is about 14 miles (23 km) south of Marietta, Ohio. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad reached Parkersburg in 1857, but lacked a crossing over the Ohio River until after the American Civil War. When the B&O completed the Parkersburg Bridge (CSX) 1868–1870 to Belpre, it was the longest railroad bridge in the world. The Bureau of the Public Debt, an agency of the U.S. Treasury Department, was relocated from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area in the late 20th century and headquartered in Parkersburg. In October 2012, it was merged with the Financial Management Service to form the Bureau of the Fiscal Service.

Worthington Creek is a tributary of the Little Kanawha River, 15.4 miles (24.8 km) long, in western West Virginia in the United States. Via the Little Kanawha and Ohio rivers, it is part of the watershed of the Mississippi River, draining an area of 35 square miles (91 km2) in the city of Parkersburg and its vicinity. Worthington Creek flows for its entire length in northern Wood County. It rises approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) south of Waverly and flows generally southwestward to Parkersburg, where it flows into the Little Kanawha River from the north, approximately 1.9 miles (3.1 km) upstream of the Little Kanawha River's mouth.According to the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, approximately 68% of the Worthington Creek watershed is forested, mostly deciduous. Approximately 23% is used for pasture and agriculture, and approximately 9% is developed.According to the Geographic Names Information System, Worthington Creek has also been known by the name "Worthingtons Creek."

Sumner School was a school for African Americans in Parkersburg, West Virginia. It was established in 1862 during the American Civil War. J. Rupert Jefferson led it for more than 40 years. It closed in 1955 after desegregation. The school's 1926 gymnasium is now the Sumnerite African-American History Museum and Multipurpose Center.It was originally known as Parkersburg Colored School. The school was renamed for abolitionist U.S. senator Charles Sumner.Michael J. Rice wrote The Sumner 7: A History of Sumner High School.

House at 10th and Avery Streets is a historic home located at Parkersburg, Wood County, West Virginia. It was built between about 1860 and 1879, and is a two-story, frame house in the Eastlake / Carpenter Gothic style. Its roof has a complex composition of hips and gabled wall dormers, pierced by two brick chimney. The house features sawn woodwork that make it the most highly ornamented residential building in downtown Parkersburg.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Dr. W. W. Monroe House is a historic home located at Parkersburg, Wood County, West Virginia. It was built in 1898, and is a 2+1⁄2-story, frame dwelling on a sandstone foundation and clad in weatherboard. The house features a large wrap-around porch, two corner turrets, a hipped roof with dormers, decorative brackets, and dentils characteristic of the Queen Anne style. It was designed by noted Charleston, West Virginia architect H. Rus Warne (1872–1954).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.

Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church was a historic African Methodist Episcopal church located at 820 Clay Street in Parkersburg, Wood County, West Virginia. It was built in 1887 and was a two-story, stucco building in a vernacular interpretation of the Gothic Revival style. It was one of three black churches in Parkersburg and was the oldest black church building in west-central West Virginia. The church was located in a neighborhood of late 19th-century wood-frame houses only a block from downtown.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. It is presumed to have been demolished or moved since then.

First Presbyterian Church, also known as the Calvary Temple Evangelical Church and St. Patrick's Priory Church, is a historic church at 946 Market Street in Parkersburg, Wood County, West Virginia. It was built in 1894, and is a two-story, brick and stone church building in a combined Romanesque / Gothic Revival style. It features a corner bell tower.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, and it is a contributing property to the Avery Street Historic District, which was designated and listed on the National Register in 1986.Since 2016, the church building has been home to St. Patrick's Priory Church, a congregation of the Missionary Diocese of All Saints in the Anglican Church in North America.

Tavenner House is a historic home located at Parkersburg, Wood County, West Virginia. The main house was built about 1812, and is a two-story, brick house coated in stucco in the Federal style. It has a gable roof and sits on a foundation of cut stone slabs. The property includes a 1+1⁄2-story frame dependency with a gable roof and covered in novelty siding. It is the oldest remaining building in the Parkersburg area and is associated with Colonel Thomas Tavenner, a prominent early settler of this area.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Parkersburg High School–Washington Avenue Historic District, is a national historic district located at Parkersburg, Wood County, West Virginia. The Parkersburg High School was built in 1917 north of the Avery Street Historic District in the Jacobethan Revival style. It was designed by Ohio architect Frank Packard (1866-1923).It was listed to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

Parkersburg Women's Club is a historic clubhouse located at Parkersburg, Wood County, West Virginia. It was built between about 1860 and 1879, as a private home in the Italian Villa style. It is a two-story, frame building with a very low-pitched hipped roof. It features a one-story wraparound porch. It has housed the Parkersburg Women's Club since 1921.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, and it is a contributing property to the Avery Street Historic District, which was designated and listed on the National Register in 1986.

Jackson Memorial Fountain is a historic fountain located at the entrance to City Park at Parkersburg, Wood County, West Virginia. It was built in 1905 and is a cast iron structure that originally had three tiers. The second tier is topped by Parkersburg's Lady of the Lake statue. It features elaborately sculpted and decorated basins and pedestals. The fountain is dedicated to the locally prominent Jackson family, that included General John Jay Jackson and his sons Federal Judge John Jay Jackson, Jr., Governor Jacob B. Jackson, and Circuit Judge and Congressman James M. Jackson.The original cast-iron bowls were stuck by lightning and destroyed in the early 1990s; their glass-fibre replacements and the rest of the original structure were destroyed in an October 2018 storm, but a replica was erected in 2020.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

The Parkersburg Carnegie Library is a historic library building located at Parkersburg, Wood County, West Virginia. It was designed and built in 1905, with funds provided by the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. It is one of 3,000 such libraries constructed between 1885 and 1919. Carnegie provided $34,000 toward the construction of the Parkersburg library. It is a two-story, L-shaped brick structure in the Classical Revival style. The facade is detailed in gray stone and features a pediment with two Doric order columns. It ceased use as a library about 1975, and in December 1985, it was re-opened, as Trans Allegheny Books, which was the largest used book store in West Virginia until it closed in 2010.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
