Its foundations dates back to the early 9th century, and its name actually means "place of walls", due to ruins of supposedly Roman origin found there. Currently, Mauerstetten has about 2,800 inhabitants living in the four parts of the community: Mauerstetten itself, Steinholz, Hausen and Frankenried. Agriculture still plays a large role in the village, but some modest industry is to be found there as well. The village has a primary school, a kindergarten, two banks (Sparkasse and RaiBa), a small grocery store, a bakery, and a small post office. In the center of Mauerstetten stands the church St. Vitus.

The Order of Port Royal (Orden von Port Royal) is an Old Catholic religious order in the Cistercian tradition whose motherhouse is St. Severin's Abbey in Kaufbeuren, Germany. Professed monks use the post-nominal letters OPR. At Kaufbeuren there are four resident monks, one hermit, one nonresident sister, and several lay oblates. The order has no other abbeys, but has at various times claimed individual friars in Ebenweiler, Dresden and Korschenbroich in Germany; Port-au-Prince, Haiti; Brownwood, Texas; Kumbo, Cameroon; and Karlskrona, Sweden.

Riederloh was the name of two camps providing forced laborers to the gunpowder and ammunition facility of Dynamit AG (DAG) in Kaufbeuren, Bavaria. Located approximately 80 km to the southwest of Munich in Nazi Germany, the camps were named "Riederloh" and "Riederloh II" respectively.
