Orihuela Cathedral

The Diocese of Orihuela-Alicante (Latin: Dioecesis Oriolensis-Lucentinus) is a Latin Church diocese of the Catholic Church located in the cities of Orihuela and Alicante in the ecclesiastical province of Valencia in Spain. It was established as Diocese of Orihuela from the Diocese of Cartagena in 1564, obtaining its current denomination in 1959.

The Battle of Oriola was an armed conflict fought between the troops of the Agermanats (members of the Revolt of the Brotherhoods), mainly artisan guilds, and those of Pedro Fajardo y Chacón, Marqués de los Vélez, on 30 August 1521 in Oriola (Orihuela), in the Kingdom of Valencia (now in Spain). The events were marked by strong internal disputes amongst the Agermanats (members of the Revolt of the Brotherhoods), which were divided between moderates and radicals. This led to a significant decline in their forces, just over a month after the Battle of Gandia. The defeat of the Germanias was crucial to the Revolt of the Brotherhoods. It killed more than 2,000 men and was accompanied by a major crackdown, with the execution of forty Agermanado. As a result, the southern Kingdom of Valencia, from Alicante to Ontinyent, fell into royalist hands

Orihuela (Spanish: [oɾiˈwela]) is a city and municipality located at the feet of the Sierra de Orihuela mountains in the province of Alicante, Spain. The city of Orihuela had a population of 33,943 inhabitants at the beginning of 2013. The municipality has a total area of 367.19 km2, and stretches all the way down to the Mediterranean coast, west of Torrevieja, and had a total population of 92,000 inhabitants at the beginning of 2013. This includes not only the city of Orihuela, but also the coastal tourist development hub (urbanización turística) of Dehesa de Campoamor with 33,277 inhabitants (2013) and a few other villages.The river Segura flows through Orihuela. The city was settled by Romans who called it Orcelis and subsequently Aurariola.

Vega Baja del Segura (in Spanish) or Baix Segura (in Valencian) is a comarca in the province of Alicante, Valencian Community, Spain. To the north its neighbouring comarcas are the Baix Vinalopó and Vinalopó Mitjà. Its southern limits are also those of the Valencian Community as it meets a different autonomous community, the Region of Murcia.

Estadio Municipal de Los Arcos is a football ground in Orihuela in Valencian Community, Spain. It is the home of the Orihuela CF football team. The first official match played in Los Arcos was a Torneo Vega Baja game organized by Federación Murciana de Fútbol on May 13, 1945. The former Orihuela Deportiva beat CD Torrevejense 5-1. However, the official opening was several months later, on December 26, 1945. The bishop of Orihuela José García Goldáraz blessed the ground and a friendly match was played, where Orihuela Deportiva lost to Primera División team Real Murcia. The most important renovation took place in 1990. After the promotion of Orihuela Deportiva to Segunda División, the highest stands of the grandstand were built. In 2001 and 2002 some minor renovations were made: the seats were placed, the current electronic scoreboard was installed and the fencing around the pitch was removed. In addition, the stands were all painted blue and yellow, giving the ground its current appearance.

The University of Orihuela was located at the Convent of Santo Domingo, in Orihuela. It was the second university in the ancient Kingdom of Valencia, founded 40 years after the University of Valencia. The official name of the institution was Pontificia y Real Universidad de Orihuela (Pontifical and Royal University of Orihuela). The aforementioned university was governed by the Order of the Preachers (Dominicans) who had their convent inside it. Its building is currently occupied by the Diocesan School of Santo Domingo.

Sierra de Orihuela (Valencian: Serra d'Oriola) is a 9.4 km (6 mi) long mountain range in the Vega Baja del Segura (Valencian: Baix Segura) comarca, Valencian Community, Spain. Its highest point is Peña de Orihuela (634 m). This range is named after the town of Orihuela (Valencian: Oriola), located at the feet of the mountains. The western end of the range is within the limits of the Santomera municipal term, in the Region of Murcia. These conspicuous limestone mountains rise abruptly from the low Segura River Valley floor and have some very steep cliffs popular with rock climbers, like "La Pared Negra". There is very little vegetation on the arid mountain slopes and both physically and geologically the Sierra de Orihuela is similar to the Sierra de Callosa range located only 2.6 km to the east. Smoother Sierra de Hurchillo is located 4.8 km to the south
