Dengie Hundred

Dengie is a village and civil parish in the Maldon district of Essex, England, with a population of 119 at the 2011 census. It gives its name to the Dengie peninsula and hundred and to the Dengie Special Protection Area. The place-name 'Dengie' is first attested in a manuscript of between 709 and 745, where it appears as Deningei. It appears as Daneseia in the Domesday Book of 1086. The name means 'Dene's island' or 'the island of Dene's people'. The 14th-century church of St James is the parish Church for the village. Dengie Flats, offshore, was used as a bombing and strafing range by the RAF and USAAF during the Second World War, and also attracted many crash-landing aircraft bound to or from the nearby RAF Bradwell Bay airfield. Between 1942 and 1945 Dengie was also the site of a 10-cm "Coast Defence" radar station used to warn of enemy ships and low-flying aircraft and doodlebugs. Tillingham is a small village and civil parish with 1,015 inhabitants in 2001, increasing to 1,058 at the 2011 Census. Located 8 miles (13 km) from Burnham-on-Crouch and 3 miles (4.8 km) from Bradwell-on-Sea, on the Dengie Peninsula which is a Maldon District part of the ceremonial county of Essex in England. It is one of the villages that make up the ancient Dengie Hundred, which is bounded by the North Sea, River Blackwater and River Crouch. The village has strong links with St Paul's Cathedral in London. The Corporation of the Cathedral Church of St Paul owns three arable farms, domestic properties and a significant amount of surrounding land. Tillingham village is clustered around the main street with a historic centre that has been designated as a conservation area. The conservation area in Tillingham was designated on 15 July 1969, since which there have been no revisions to the boundaries. It covers the historic settlement, which at the time of designation comprised the majority of the village. The conservation area centres on the parish church of St. Nicholas and The Square stretching along the linear pattern of North Street and South Street. Short lengths of side roads off The Square and North and South Streets are also included: these are Brook Road, Bradwell Road, Marsh Road, Vicarage Lane, Casey Lane, Chapel Lane and Marlborough Avenue.

Asheldham is a village and civil parish in Essex, England. It is located about 14 km (8.7 mi) southeast of Maldon and is 26 km (16 mi) east-southeast from the county town of Chelmsford. The village is in the district of Maldon and the parliamentary constituency of Maldon & East Chelmsford. The village is part of the combined Asheldham and Dengie Parish Council. It is on the Dengie peninsula, and is about 12 miles by road from Maldon. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 150, reducing to 142 at the Census 2011. The former parish church, dedicated to St Lawrence became redundant in May 1973 and was converted into use as a youth church and residential centre for the Chelmsford Diocese. With a chancel, nave and tower dating from the 1300s, it is a Grade II listed building. A Ham class minesweeper, HMS Asheldham, launched in September 1953 was named after the hamlet. Archeological excavations into Romano-British field systems, Anglo-Saxon graves and medieval buildings have taken place in the village.

St Lawrence is a parish in the Maldon district of Essex in the East of England on the Dengie peninsula. The village of St Lawrence Bay, which takes its name from the parish, is situated on the south shore of the Blackwater Estuary, 4 miles (6.5 km) from Southminster and is also known by local residents as “Stone”. The village contains areas known as Ramsey Island and St Lawrence Bay. The village has a single access road leading down to the estuary shore and has seen recent expansion and the construction of new housing due to its riverside location and proximity to Southminster railway station, which provides a fast commuter service to Liverpool Street Station in the City of London. Also with bus links via the D1 allowing for access to Bradwell-on-sea and Maldon where other bus links are available. There are a small number of businesses in the village including two pubs called “The Stone” and "St Lawrence Inn" and a single shop which also provides Post Office services. In the summer the population of the area swells due to tourism, with the presence of Waterside Holiday Park which holds many open days for local residents and its visitors, plus with many second homes the area becomes a retreat for many. The Blackwater Estuary also provides a good location for water sports and there are two clubs which provide facilities on the waterfront; Stone Watersports Club and Stone Sailing Club. In 2012 St Lawrence opened a village hall which hosts various social clubs. The area also has many more outdoor pursuits from rambling to triathlons and road cycling. The village is protected from flooding by a sea wall which was reinforced in the nineties due to increased flood risk in the east of England. This provides a footpath along the south bank of the estuary with good views of the surrounding countryside. Also located at intervals along the sea wall are Type 2 pillboxes that were built to defend the estuary during the Second World War.

Bradwell-on-Sea is a village and civil parish in Essex, England; it is on the Dengie peninsula. It is located 5.6 mi (9.0 km) north-north-east of Southminster and is 19 mi (31 km) east of the county town of Chelmsford. The village is in the District of Maldon and in the parliamentary constituency of Maldon, whose boundaries were last varied at the 2010 general election. In 2011, it had a population of 863, a decline from 877 in the previous census. In 2021 the population was 892.

Southminster railway station is the eastern terminus of the Crouch Valley Line in Essex, England; it serves the town of Southminster and other settlements on the Dengie Peninsula. It is 45 miles 42 chains (73.27 km) down the line from London Liverpool Street. The station is managed by Greater Anglia, which operates all services. The Engineer's Line Reference for the line is WIS and the station's three-letter station code is SMN. The platform has an operational length for 8 carriages. The preceding station to the west is Burnham-on-Crouch.

Bradwell Lodge is a country house in the village of Bradwell-on-Sea, on the Dengie Peninsula in Essex, England. Originally a Tudor rectory, in the 18th century the house was purchased by the Reverend Sir Henry Bate Dudley. Bate Dudley engaged John Johnson, Surveyor of the County of Essex, to build a large Neoclassical extension. In the 20th century, the lodge was the home of the local MP, Tom Driberg. Bradwell remains a private residence. It is a Grade II* listed building.

Southminster is a town and civil parish on the Dengie Peninsula in the Maldon district of Essex in the East of England. It lies about 3 miles (4.8 km) north of Burnham-on-Crouch and 10 miles (16 km) south-east of Maldon; it is approximately 52 miles (84 km) east-north-east of London. To the north is the River Blackwater, which is tidal, and, since Roman times, has been the gateway to trading in the area.

Goldsands Road Pit is a 1.3-hectare (3.2-acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Southminster in Essex. It is a Geological Conservation Review site. This site provides the earliest evidence of an ancient course of the combined Thames and Medway rivers, which flowed north-east across eastern Essex in the late Anglian period around 400,000 years ago. The site is on private land with no public access.

Bradwell Waterside is a small hamlet in Essex, England. It is located about 9 km (5.6 mi) north-northeast of Southminster and is 28 km (17 mi) east from the county town of Chelmsford. The hamlet is in the district of Maldon and the parliamentary constituency of Maldon & East Chelmsford. The population of the hamlet is included in the civil parish of Bradwell-on-Sea. It has a marina and is about a mile north-northwest of Bradwell-on-Sea on the Blackwater Estuary on the northern edge of the Dengie peninsula. The hamlet sits at the end of the B1021, the main road through the north of the Dengie peninsula to Latchingdon, and on the coast of Bradwell Creek, a channel next to the Blackwater. Nearby, there is the former Royal Air Force base RAF Bradwell Bay, owing to the flat land of the Dengie. Today the base is farmland. Additionally, there is the former nuclear power plant, Bradwell Power Station, a significant local and navigational landmark. The buildings themselves still stand post-decommissioning, and so does the water intake in the Blackwater. A beach runs along the north-east edge of the Dengie here, from Bradwell Waterside to the Dengie Marshes at Saint Peter's chapel. There are two pubs in Bradwell, The Green Man in the hamlet and the Marina Bar at Bradwell Marina.

MV Ross Revenge is a radio ship, the home of Radio Caroline, as well as having supported Radio Monique and various religious broadcasters. Funded by the Icelandic government, she was constructed in Bremerhaven in 1960 and served as an Icelandic commercial trawler until 1963 when she was sold to the Ross Group fleet, notably taking part in the Cod Wars of the 1970s. Following her decommissioning, she was purchased by Radio Caroline and outfitted as a radio ship, complete with 300-foot (91 m) antenna mast and 50 kW transmitter. Her broadcasts began on 20 August 1983; her final pirate broadcast took place in November 1990. She ran aground on the Goodwin Sands in November 1991, bringing the era of offshore pirate radio in Europe to an end. She was, however, salvaged, and is now maintained by the Caroline Support Group, a group of supporters and enthusiasts.

Sandbeach Meadows are a 30.3-hectare (75-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest on the Dengie Peninsula, south-east of Bradwell-on-Sea in Essex. The local planning authority is Maldon District Council. The site is seven fields of unimproved grassland, and it is almost the only survivor of the formerly extensive Dengie grazing marshes. In the winter it supports a nationally important population of dark-bellied brent geese, and it is also used by wigeons and European white-fronted geese. Several ditches have meanders which survive from when they were salt-marsh creeks. The site is in two separate areas which are private land, but the St Peter's Way long distance footpath goes through the southern area.
