Sangamon is an unincorporated community in Oakley Township, Macon County, Illinois, United States. Sangamon is located along the Norfolk Southern Railway, 5.5 miles (8.9 km) east-northeast of downtown Decatur.

Scovill Zoo in Decatur, Illinois, is one of 210 zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums with 96 species spanning six continents and around 500 animals in residence. The zoo originally started out as a farm in 1967 when the Kiwanis Club donated money for its construction. Scovill Zoo has its own chapter of the AAZK or American Association of Zoo Keepers. The zoo participates in a large number of conservation projects and education.

Spitler Woods State Natural Area is a 202.5-acre (81.9 ha) state park located adjacent to Mount Zion, Illinois. The state park is located within the Decatur, Illinois metropolitan area. The eastern two-thirds of the state park is a listed state natural area noted for its old-growth forest grove of white oak and hickory. The park is managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). Spitler Woods contains two trails totaling 2.5 miles (4.0 km) in length. Hikers can investigate the loessy soil forming the banks of Squirrel Creek, one of the tiny tributaries that eventually come together to form Lake Decatur and the Sangamon River. The woods are filled with squirrels, who eat the acorns and other mast shed by the old-growth hardwoods. Although deer live in the natural area, hunting is forbidden. The preserve includes many tree species, such as white oak (Quercus alba), chinkapin oak (Q. muehlenbergii), bur oak (Q. macrocarpa), black oak (Q. velutina), red oak (Q. rubra), sugar maple (Acer saccharum), shagbark hickory (Carya ovata), bitternut hickory (C. cordiformis), mockernut hickory (C. tomentosa), black walnut (Juglans nigra), basswood (Tilia americana), American elm (Ulmus americana), slippery elm (U. rubra), Ohio buckeye (Aesculus glabra), sycamore (Platanus occidentalis), hophornbeam (Ostrya virginiana), black cherry (Prunus serotina), and white ash (Fraxinus americana). Other woody plants include bladdernut (Staphylea trifolia), spicebush (Lindera benzoin), pawpaw (Asimina triloba), blackhaw (Viburnum prunifolium), eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis), hawthorn (Crataegus spp.), Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia), and poison-ivy (Toxicodendron radicans). The park is adjacent to, and has signed access from, Illinois Route 121. It is named in honor of Ida B. Spitler, who donated Spitler Woods to the state of Illinois in 1937. The park's headquarters is 705 Spitler Park Drive, Mount Zion IL 62549.

Progress City USA, located in Decatur, Illinois is an outdoor convention center and is a division of Richland Community College. The 300-acre (1.2 km2) facility was built as a semi-permanent home for the Farm Progress Show from 2005 to 2025. Progress City USA hosts the Farm Progress Show during odd number years but is utilized as a site for a variety of outdoor events and conventions throughout the year.

Staley Field in Decatur, Illinois, United States, was the home of the Decatur Staleys club of the American Professional Football Association in 1920, coached and managed by the young George Halas, who also played for the team. The team was owned by the A. E. Staley Manufacturing Company, for which Staley Field was the company athletic field. Staley Field was also used by the company baseball team during the summer months, and Halas also played on that team. The field was also used by the Decatur entry in the Three-I League in 1915 and 1922–23.Although the Staley football team was popular in 1920, it struggled financially, partly due to Staley Field's 1,500 seating capacity. Fans were charged $1 to attend games and company employees received a 50 percent discount, which was not economically feasible for the Staleys and prompted Halas to move games to Cubs Park (now Wrigley Field) in Chicago.The Staley company sold the team to Halas and his partners, who transferred the team to Cubs Park in 1921. As part of the deal, they operated under the "Staley" name for one more season. They proceeded to win the APFA championship that season. For 1922, they renamed themselves the Chicago Bears in order to associate themselves with their landlords.

Fort Daniel Conservation Area is a 200-acre (0.8 km²) park located 4 miles (6.5 km) east of Mount Zion, Illinois. The land preserve protects the site of a ghost town, Whistleville. Today, the site centers on hiking and picknicking in the Big Creek watershed southeast of Decatur.Five marked trails comprise 4.5 miles (7.0 km) of hiking opportunities that cross and recross Big Creek. At the north end of the conservation area, a recreational complex includes a picnic shelter, playground, and fire ring. Tree watchers are encouraged to find and identify the sugar maples, chinquapin oaks, pawpaw, wafer ash, and Kentucky coffeetrees that grow in the conservation area. The conservation area is maintained by the Macon County Conservation District.In August 2022, a private-sector donor awarded a $2.9 million grant to the MCCD to enable a 236-acre land acquisition adjacent to the existing Area. The grant will roughly double the size of the Area.The nearest major highway is Illinois Route 121, southeast of Decatur.

Mount Zion High School is a public high school located in Mount Zion, Illinois. The school serves students in grades 9 through 12 and is the only high school operated by Mount Zion Community Unit School District #3.

Lake Decatur is a 2,800-acre (11 km2) reservoir located in the city of Decatur, Illinois, USA, east of downtown. The city and lake both share the name of U.S. Navy Commodore Stephen Decatur. The lake is 613 feet (187 m) above sea level and has a watershed of 925 square miles (2,400 km2) or 592,000 acres (240,000 ha) reaching into parts of seven counties. The largest lake on the Sangamon River, it was created in 1920–1922.
