Peace River (Florida)

The Myakka River is a river in southwestern Florida. It arises near the Hardee-Manatee county line and flows southwest and then southeast through Manatee, Sarasota and Charlotte counties to Charlotte Harbor, an arm of the Gulf of Mexico. The river is 72 miles (116 km) long and has a drainage basin of 602 square miles (1559.2 km2), of which 314.7 square miles (815 km2) lies in Sarasota county. The last 20 miles (32 km) of the river is tidal and brackish. The Myakka River remains relatively undeveloped. A 12-mile (19 km) stretch of the river is preserved in Myakka River State Park. A 34-mile (55 km) portion of the river in Sarasota County (including all of the park) was designated as a state Wild and Scenic River in 1985 by the Florida Legislature. Portions of the ancient water basin, however, have been altered by canals. In 2022, the river flooding during Hurricane Ian resulted in the temporary closing of 14 miles of Interstate 75 near Port Charlotte.

The Mott Willis Store, also known as the Knight-Willis Store, was a historic building in Charlotte Harbor, Florida. It was located at 22960 Bayshore Road. On May 30, 1997, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. However, the following year it was demolished.In 2000, an archeological dig was performed at the Mott Willis General Store site. Artifacts recovered from the excavation are on display at the Charlotte Harbor Historic Center.

Deep Creek is a deed restricted unincorporated community in Charlotte County, Florida, United States. It lies 5.5 miles (8.9 km) East of Port Charlotte. The community is part of the Sarasota-Bradenton-Punta Gorda Combined Statistical Area. Deep Creek is served by utilities of both Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte. Deep Creek's mail is processed at the Punta Gorda post office, but telephone numbers in the area are registered as Port Charlotte.

It is part of the Sarasota-Bradenton-Punta Gorda Combined Statistical Area. Port Charlotte High School (PCHS) is a four-year, comprehensive, U.S. public high school located in Port Charlotte, Florida and is located adjacent to Charlotte Technical College. The school opened in 1981, graduated its first class in 1984, its mascot is the pirate, and the school motto is "Yes, I am a Pirate." It is operated by Charlotte County Public Schools.At one point in time, Port Charlotte High School was the largest high school in Charlotte County, with 2,082 students enrolled in grades Grades 9 through 12. Enrollment was traditionally based on students' geographic locations, but is now by choice under the more recently created open enrollment program.The school has grown much, and it survived Hurricane Charley in 2004 and Hurricane Ian in 2022. The school's main feeders are Murdock Middle School, Port Charlotte Middle School, and Punta Gorda Middle School. The school's top athletic rivals are Charlotte High School and Lemon Bay High School. PCHS has educated two National Football League players and one Major League Baseball player who also played in the 2008 Summer Olympics.

The Albert W. Gilchrist Bridge is a bridge in Charlotte County, Florida, crossing the Peace River between Port Charlotte, Florida, and Punta Gorda, Florida. The two-lane 45-foot-tall structure carries the southbound lanes of U.S. Route 41 (Tamiami Trail). US 41's northbound lanes are carried over the river on the adjacent Barron Collier Bridge. It was named for former Florida Governor Albert W. Gilchrist, who resided in Punta Gorda.

It is 45 feet tall and carries two northbound lanes of U.S. Route 41 (Tamiami Trail). The southbound lanes cross the river on the adjacent Gilchrist Bridge. It was named for Barron G. Collier, a wealthy Southwest Florida land owner and entrepreneur.
