Glen Carbon Village Hall and Firehouse is a historic building at 180 Summit Avenue in Glen Carbon, Illinois. It was built in 1910 to serve as Glen Carbon's first village hall. The village was founded in 1892, and its government met in various businesses and public buildings until the village's growth necessitated a permanent building. The Oswald Brothers of nearby Alhambra built the Neoclassical building. The village government occupied the upper level of the building, while its fire department used the lower level. The village hall was the site of several contentious events in the 1910s; one village trustee won a tied election by pulling a number from a hat, and village president Hiram Slinger, Jr., had his nominees for village treasurer unanimously rejected by the trustees seventeen times. The village government moved to the former Glen Carbon Grade School in 1954, and the fire department moved to a new firehouse in 1981; the building is now used as meeting space by a model railroad club and a local Boy Scout troop.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 19, 2018.

The Glen Carbon Grade School is a historic school building located at 124 School Street in Glen Carbon, Illinois. The two-story brick school has a Romanesque-influenced design planned by John William Kennedy. The school was built in 1914 to replace Glen Carbon's one-room schoolhouse, which its student population had outgrown. A four-room frame building supplemented both the old and new schools, so Glen Carbon had eight classrooms in total with its new school. Grades one through four were taught in the new building, while the upper grades used the frame building. The school was part of the Edwardsville school district, and students who wished to attend high school did so in Edwardsville. Glen Carbon was a European immigrant community, and its students reflected the village's wide variety of ethnic groups. The parents of the village, who mainly worked as coal miners, often volunteered for school events. When a new school opened in 1954, the village purchased the building for office space; it now houses the Glen Carbon Historical Museum.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 25, 2014.

WSIE is a public radio station in Edwardsville, Illinois. Owned by Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, it is the primary jazz station for the Greater St. Louis area. Rebranding as "The Sound" in August 2016, WSIE broadcasts jazz, smooth jazz, blues, and R&B along with news and student programming, and is the anchor station for SIUE Sports' Cougar Network.Licensed by the Federal Communications Commission in January 1969, WSIE operates with 50,000 watts of effective radiated power (ERP) at 88.7 megahertz in the FM band.A long time member of National Public Radio, they do not broadcast NPR anymore; WSIE's music programming is locally produced. The station's studios are in Dunham Hall, and the transmitter and 420 feet (130 m) tower are located near the Supporting Services Building on the SIUE campus.WSIE is used as a training ground for students of the SIUE Mass Communications Department. Among broadcasters who received training at WSIE are Frank O Pinion (John Craddock); Megan Lynch, Ralph Graczak and Tom Calhoun of KMOX; Dewayne Staats (currently the play-by-play commentator with MLB's Tampa Bay Rays on Sun Sports); Paul Schankmann; Elizabeth Erwin; Steve Jankowski (previous General Manager); Sara Wojcicki; Frank Akers; Tom Dehner; and Tom Casey. A separately programmed web-radio operation was previously run by WSIE, but it is now operated independently, although it remains a University activity.In 2016, WSIE faced the potential loss of its state appropriation due to the Illinois state budget crisis. The SIUE administration ordered WSIE to become self-sustaining by 2017, necessitating fundraising. The station receives tax-deductible donations on its website. Its budget is made up of underwriting (similar to advertising) and donations. Today, the station receives no state funding.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE, stylized as SIUe) is a public university in Edwardsville, Illinois in Metro-East, near St. Louis. SIUE was established in 1957 as an extension of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. It is the younger of the two major institutions of Southern Illinois University system, and, as of 2018, has the larger enrollment. The university offers graduate programs through its Graduate School. The majority of SIUE's students are from Illinois, with out-of-state and international students accounting for 19% of enrollment. SIUE does offer in-state tuition for undergraduate students from all 50 states. The university offers numerous extracurricular activities to its students, including athletics, honor societies, student clubs and organizations, as well as fraternities and sororities. The university has more than 115,000 alumni.Fielding athletic teams known as the SIU Edwardsville Cougars, the university participates in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division I level as a member of Ohio Valley Conference (OVC).
